Iraq emerges as China's fifth-largest oil supplier in January
Baghdad ( – The General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China announced on Tuesday that Iraq's oil supplies to 32 independent Chinese refineries rose during January 2025.
According to China's General Administration of Customs, Iraq's oil exports to independent Chinese refineries increased by 35.1 percent in January, reaching 1.13 million tons (8.28 million barrels), up from 840,000 tons (6.13 million barrels) in December 2024.
Iraq ranked fifth among the nine major countries exporting oil to independent Chinese refineries, trailing only Malaysia (five million tons), Saudi Arabia (3.07 million tons), Russia (2.62 million tons), and the UAE (1.21 million tons).
In 2024, Iraq exported 1.19 million barrels of oil per day to China, according to data issued by the US Institute for Energy Research (IER).
The Chinese Ambassador to Iraq, Cui Wei, revealed in mid-January that the volume of trade exchange between Iraq and China reached $50 billion in 2024.
During a press conference held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, Wei said that commerce between the two countries increased by 10 percent and that the growth was smooth, Shafaq News reported.
The Chinese diplomat indicated that cooperation between China and Iraq is not limited to one field but rather includes energy, electricity, transportation, communications, school projects, and other fields.
