Trenton native participates in Fleet Week

NEW YORK (WJBF) — Fleet Week is underway in New York. The public can tour military ships and watch demonstrations. A Trenton native serving aboard the USS New York is there. 'We literally have one stoplight down there, sir. A Dollar General. We just got our gas station backing up, running,' Seaman Mackquez Holmes said. From one stoplight to Fleet Week in New York City, Seaman Mackquez Holmes is living a dream rooted in legacy and choice. A Strom Thurmond grad, Holmes serves aboard USS New York. 'My dad was in the military. He's also was the same exact rate, Boatswain's Mate, everything like that. So, it was pretty big for me,' he recalled. Now he's front and center piping in the Secretary of the Navy. 'Everybody likes to call it a whistle. It's not a whistle, it's a pipe,' he shared. 'I was able to pipe the Admiral and the Secretary of the Navy at his dinner. So that was probably definitely the best memorable time for me. Maybe probably since I've been in the Navy, honestly.' That pride built on work, long days, tough balance and growth. It gave me more responsibility,' Seaman Holmes said. 'I look at a lot of stuff differently. You have to adjust — not just to the military, but at home too. It's hard, but it's good. There's nothing easy about it. I can tell you that.' Still, he makes time for joy. 'I definitely like to fish. And I love to eat — I'm a big guy, man. Very big. I love working out. I love sports to death. I'm a sports guy. Big sports guy,' he shared. He keeps family close. No matter where the sea takes him. 'Everybody knows back at home. My grandmother don't play about me, man.,' Holmes said laughing. And for others thinking about the service, he's clear. 'If you guys want to join the Navy—for my younger people out there—join it. It changes your life, literally in a blink, a snap, everything you can think of. I'm here today in New York City, literally celebrating Memorial Day and Fleet Week right now. I've been in for three years, having a great time. Don't regret it at all.' Young cadet joins USS Oak Hill for Fleet Week in NYC

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Local sailors are in New York City for the big military celebration at Fleet Week, offering up fun experiences for our service members and an opportunity to engage with the public while providing opportunities for young cadets using this to experience life on board a Navy ship for the first time. Born in San Diego while her father was serving, 14-year-old Sara Magee got to experience Fleet Week as a Sea Cadet. 'As soon as we got there, the crew immediately accepted us as a part of them,' Magee said. Embarking from Little Creek, they left Norfolk this week for Manhattan. It was her first time onboard a Navy ship. From the engine room to the flight deck, she got to see it all — living the life of a sailor. 'Being able to experience life on the ship, sleeping in the birthing, eating in the mess deck, experiencing everything, the day-to-day life of a sailor,' she said. 'We're in the same exact uniform and we just look like we're a part of the crew. It was a very good feeling.' Magee said it was good to see the options in person — as she thinks about possibly joining the Marines after talking to some onboard. The USS Oak Hill joins the USS New York in New York for the next several days. Several hundred Marines and sailors will stay in town for the many events happening on and off the ships. Fleet Week 2025 honors 250th Birthday of the US Navy & Marine Corps

New York's 37th annual Fleet Week celebration kicked off this week with the Parade of Ships on the majestic Hudson River and runs through Tuesday. It's a great chance to tour ships or catch free military band concerts in Times Square before honoring our fallen heroes on Memorial Day. This year's theme, 'Honoring the Past, Defending the Future: 250 Years of Sea Service Excellence' is a tribute to sailors and Marines from the past, present and future. Advertisement 3 The celebration of the armed forces will take place May 21-27 and include two US Navy ships, two Coast Guard Cutters and five US Navy Academy Yard Patrol boats, plus a flyover by F-18 Hornet jets. 'Fleet Week New York reminds us that behind every uniform is a story — of family, of sacrifice, and of service to something greater than self. As we celebrate 250 years of the Navy and Marine Corps, we are proud to return to a city whose strength and spirit mirror the very heart of our nation,' said Rear Adm. Carl Lahti, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic. The week-long event includes ship tours and a variety of public military demonstrations that only began with Wednesday's Parade of Ships and the followup flyovers along the Hudson by F-18 Hornet fighters. Norfolk-based Navy ships in New York City for Fleet Week

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Fleet Week is a time for sailors and Marines to show off what they do through ship tours and many other events, as they get invited to things like baseball games, national talk shows and other happenings in New York City. While there is fun to be had, it's also described as a humbling experience. Many spectators watched the parade of ships enter Manhattan, even on a misty, drizzly day. The USS New York came into the Hudson River just before noon Wednesday — the ship with 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel in its bow, passing by Ground Zero. Norfolk-based sailors and Marines are cruising into the city that never sleeps, ready to show off what they do. 'Aviation operations going on, [and] at the same time, we've got well deck operations going on to project power ashore,' said Lt. Gen. Roberta Shae with Marine Forces Command. As part of Fleet Week, Fleet Forces Command Admiral Daryl Caudle got to visit the NYPD Joint Operations Center. U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Phelan is also joining them for Fleet Week, now 55 days into his new position. Since starting, Phelan said he is taking time to meet the sailors, visit ships and focus on deterring threats. 'So I have been really impressed by the dedication and the work ethic, and… the fighting spirit of our troops, with the Marines… and the sailors,' Phelan said. 'And that's a great thing. Do we have work to do? Yes. Are there things that we could do to get better? Absolutely.' Ship tours in New York City start Thursday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. USS New York and USS Oak Hill off to Fleet Week in New York City

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After several months of preparation, hundreds of sailors and Marines on the USS New York are heading to New York City for Fleet Week. Setting sail for Manhattan, the amphibious transport dock joins the USS Oak Hill for a week of events in the city that never sleeps. It is a trip many new recruits get to take part in. It joins the more than 450 marines and sailors on board, with Fleet Week letting the public meet all types of service members in the Navy as sailors attend events throughout town. This includes a baseball game, Broadway performances and much more. 'I've never been, so I'm really excited and looking forward to it,' Midshipman 3rd Class Brianna Newell said. 'Seeing how the enlisted interact with the public and how we can interact with them more,' Midshipman 2nd Class Job Grant said. 'It's more important now than ever to integrate the public into what the military is doing and familiarize them with that,' Midshipman 3rd Class Charlie Hecht said. Bringing the ship to its namesake city, USS New York carries about 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center in its bow. 'We're going to pass Ground Zero, which for this ship is always a special opportunity,' Commander David Pagan said. For Pagan, the trip represents his roots. 'My grandfather enlisted out of the Brooklyn Navy yard after immigrating from the Dominican Republic in WWII,' he said. 'He served on a battleship, served on a cruiser, so being able to rehash those ties to my family history in New York specifically is really something special.' They are expected to arrive sometime this week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
