Uber plans comeback in Morocco, starting with Marrakech
Uber, the American ride-hailing service, is planning a relaunch in Morocco after its exit in 2018, as suggested by a job listing for a new position in Marrakech. The company is seeking a Country Manager responsible for making Uber successful in Morocco, starting with Marrakech, and driving business growth in this key market.
The role involves focusing on both driver and rider acquisition and engagement, with the candidate developing strategies to attract new drivers, keep current ones engaged, and expand the rider base, reads the job offer posted on Uber Careers.
Uber's potential return follows a challenging departure. The company entered Morocco in mid-2015, initially operating in Casablanca and expanding to Rabat. Although it never expanded to Marrakech, Uber operated in the city during the 2016 COP22 Climate Summit, offering eco-friendly rides to delegates and attendees.
During its three years in operation, however, Uber faced significant resistance from local authorities and traditional taxi drivers. The lack of a legal framework and harassment from taxi drivers, including car chases and violence, hindered its operations. Since Uber's exit, other ride-hailing companies have entered Morocco but faced similar opposition.
