NIA charges Paresh Baruah, 2 others for I-Day blasts plan
Guwahati: The National Investigation Agency (
NIA
) on Friday formally charged Ulfa (Indepedent) chief, Paresh Baruah, and two other cadres of the proscribed outfit, in connection with a terror plot to carry out multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) blasts in Assam on
Independence Day
, last year.
The chargesheet has been filed in a Guwahati court against the three accused — Baruah, also known as Paresh Asom, Kamruj Zaman Khan, Nur-uz-Zaman, Zaman bhai, Pradip and Paban Baruah — besides naming Abhijit Gogoi alias Abhijeet Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah alias Arnob Asom alias Huntu.
"The trio were found to be a part of an Ulfa(I) conspiracy to trigger multiple IED blasts across Assam, including at Dispur Last Gate, to disrupt the I-Day celebrations last year," the agency stated.
The three have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosive Substances Act. The NIA took charge of the probe last Sept.
