Get firmer, tighter skin: How new Ultherapy delivers more effective results with precision imaging

Ultherapy Prime offers a more precise way to locate the SMAS layer — found around the temples, cheeks, jawline and neck — to boost collagen production where lifting and firming matter most. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES BRANDED CONTENT Get firmer, tighter skin: How new Ultherapy delivers more effective results with precision imaging The updated version of this well-known treatment takes less time and delivers energy deep into the skin to stimulate collagen production For those looking to firm up their jawline, lift sagging skin and improve texture without surgery or injectables, Ultherapy has been a familiar option for over a decade. The treatment, which uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin – two essential proteins that help keep skin supple and resilient – has gained recognition as a non-invasive approach, says Dr Wong Kee Seng, medical director at Kowayo Aesthetic Clinic . The core technology of the second-generation version, Ultherapy Prime, which was launched in January, has not changed but the procedure now incorporates upgrades aimed at improving patient comfort and treatment precision. 'Just like its predecessor, Ultherapy Prime does not promise a dramatic transformation, but helps those looking to maintain a youthful appearance without having to go under the knife or use needles,' says Dr Wong who offers this procedure at his clinic. 'The goal is to make you look the same over the years, but with good skin elasticity and a lifted look, now delivered with more precision and in less time,' he adds. Greater visualisation and precision for improved results Targeting early signs of ageing, Ultherapy Prime appeals to those as young as in their 30s who are looking to preserve their skin's natural firmness. PHOTO: KOWAYO AESTHETIC CLINIC The most significant advancement of Ultherapy Prime is its enhanced real-time imaging, which allows doctors to identify and target treatment layers with greater accuracy. This is made possible with a dual-function handheld device that scans and delivers ultrasound energy at the same time. As the scan projects live images onto a screen, the doctor is able to assess the skin's structure, both before and during the procedure, ensuring that the energy delivered is exactly where it is needed. Compared with the original Ultherapy device, which features a smaller screen display and lower-resolution imaging, the Prime provides a much clearer view of the skin's layers. 'With this upgrade, we can locate the patient's SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) layer more accurately,' says Dr Wong. 'The SMAS is a layer of supportive tissue located between the skin and deeper muscles, typically found around the temples, sides of the face, jawline and neck. It is a key target for lifting and firming treatments.' With Ultherapy Prime, doctors can now locate and treat this layer more effectively using ultrasound energy at precise depths of 1.5mm, 3mm or 4.5mm, depending on the area. By delivering energy directly to the SMAS, the treatment becomes not only more precise, but also more efficient. 'By targeting collagen production deep in the SMAS layer, you're reinforcing that foundation, which helps lift the skin from within, maintain facial contours and improve visible signs of ageing,' explains Dr Wong. In addition to better imaging, Ultherapy Prime also works faster and delivers energy more quickly. 'Prime's processing response is 10 times faster, which means it will take a shorter time to complete the treatment, plus it also delivers energy 20 per cent faster than the first-generation device,' says Dr Wong. A typical full-face Ultherapy Prime session takes around 45 minutes, whereas the first-generation version usually lasts close to an hour. The benefit of this increased speed and more efficient energy delivery? The experience is generally described as less painful, adds Dr Wong. What to expect during and after treatment Kowayo Aesthetic Clinic has been offering Ultherapy Prime since its launch in January. PHOTO: KOWAYO AESTHETIC CLINIC The shorter treatment time is just one of the ways Ultherapy Prime enhances the overall experience for patients. The procedure remains non-invasive, and most patients are able to return to their normal routine shortly after. 'Patients may notice mild redness or swelling right after the treatment, which typically resolves within a day or two. Some may experience tenderness in the treated areas for a week or two,' says Dr Wong. To help soothe the skin post-treatment, he recommends using a cold compress to ease any redness or discomfort and applying moisturiser to keep the skin well hydrated. In terms of results, some people may see a subtle lift immediately after the session. However, the most noticeable improvements usually develop over the next one to two months, as the body gradually produces new collagen. 'Results are expected to last around a year and the treatment can be done annually for maintenance,' says Dr Wong. Ultherapy Prime may be particularly appealing to those in their 30s to 50s who want to address early signs of ageing or preserve their skin's firmness — a trend often referred to as 'prejuvenation'. Compared with radio-frequency treatments, which work by heating the skin's surface, Ultherapy is able to target deeper tissue layers. This makes it especially suitable for individuals with thicker skin or more underlying fat in areas such as their jawline or lower face. However, Ultherapy Prime is not for everyone – in particular, individuals with active acne, skin infections, or metal implants in the treatment area, or those who are pregnant. 'As always, it is essential to choose a certified and qualified provider, and discuss your goals before deciding,' says Dr Wong. Faherty Expands ‘Second Wave' Resale Program With Mail-in Option

Surf-inspired lifestyle brand Faherty first launched its resale program, Second Wave, back in 2023 — and now, they're expanding their preloved program to allow customers to mail in their Faherty pieces in exchange for store credit on its e-commerce website. When customers send in their preloved pieces via mail, Faherty will clean, repair and relist the items on Faherty's Second Wave site. The website offerings, powered by Archive, function as both a peer-to-peer marketplace and brand-owned inventory. On Second Wave, customers can buy and sell preloved Faherty clothing or shop repaired and renewed items such as returns, damaged goods and samples that have been restored. Thus far, Faherty has reported 35,000 items resold — with the expansion of mail-ins allowing the resale business to expand and hit both its sustainable impact and financial benchmarks. 'It's been incredible to watch the success of Second Wave since we launched with Faherty in 2023,' said Emily Gittins, cofounder and chief executive officer of Archive. 'The momentum speaks to the Faherty team's commitment to circularity and their thoughtful approach to making resale not only impactful, but profitable. Expanding into mail-in trade-in is a smart next step, making it even easier for more customers to get involved.' On the sustainable front, Faherty has continued to double down through its usage of recycled and renewable fabrics, low-impact dyes and finishes, plastic-free packaging, renewable electricity in stores, complimentary repairs and keeping fabric scraps and products out of landfills. 'This Earth Month, we're thrilled to introduce the next phase of our Second Wave resale site — mail-in trade-ins. Now our customers can buy, sell or trade in their preloved Faherty pieces. By giving Faherty pieces a second life, we help divert clothing from landfills and promote a circular economy, one item at a time. It is part of our mission and sustainability strategy to reduce waste and extend the life of our high-quality products,' said Kerry Docherty, chief impact officer of Faherty.
