Nothing wrong with pushing for Cabinet appointments, says Umno man

Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan said the Cabinet is the prerogative of the prime minister. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader says there is nothing wrong with political parties pushing for Cabinet appointments although Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has the final say on the matter. 'It's up to the prime minister as the Cabinet is his prerogative. 'But it is not wrong to ask for ministerial posts,' Ahmad Maslan, an Umno Supreme Council member, was quoted as saying by Berita Harian. The deputy works minister was referring to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's call for the prime minister to ensure that his party is restored to its quota of seven ministers in the Cabinet following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's resignation from the party. Zahid said Umno had only six ministers now. 'With Tengku Zafrul no longer in Umno, the party has a right to request that a minister's portfolio be given to us,' Zahid, the deputy prime minister, was quoted as saying. Ahmad's comments were also in response to Anwar's statement that there was no pressing need for a Cabinet reshuffle despite the resignation of two ministers. Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stepped down as economy minister and natural resources and environmental sustainability minister respectively, following their defeat at the PKR polls. Rafizi lost his PKR deputy presidency to Anwar's daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Nik Nazmi failed to be re-elected as a party vice-president. A few days ago, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, who is transport minister, said the two posts had yet to be vacated as the PKR duo are merely on leave for now. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Zafrul heads to Makkah for haj

KUALA LUMPUR: Just a few hours after announcing his change in political affiliations, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz will be flying to Makkah to perform his haj pilgrimage. In a Facebook post, the Umno supreme council member said he hosted a doa selamat (prayers for gratitude and safety) tonight ahead of his journey to the Holy Land. "On this occasion, I would like to seek forgiveness from everyone reading this message if I have ever spoken harshly, misspoken, or fallen short in any way throughout our acquaintance. "Thank you for your kind thoughts and sincere prayers. Please pray that my journey and pilgrimage will be smooth, accepted, and granted the blessing of a haji mabrur (accepted or righteous haj). "God willing, I will make the most of every moment there. Please keep me in your prayers," the investment, trade and industry minister said. Earlier today, Tengku Zafrul announced that he submitted his resignation from all posts in Umno, along with his membership in the party. He was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and also headed the Kota Raja Umno division. He said he had also expressed his intention to join PKR. He said after much self-reflection and consideration of various factors, he has decided to do so due to "compatibility and suitability." Tengku Zafrul is serving his second term in the Dewan Negara.

Your ministry trumps your party, Umno man tells Rafizi

Published on: Tuesday, May 06, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 06, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said negative comments form the majority of speculation on Rafizi Ramli's leave of absence. PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member has slammed PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli for skipping yesterday's special parliamentary sitting on US tariffs but attending a party meeting the day before. Rengit assemblyman Puad Zarkashi urged Rafizi, the economy minister, to explain why he was taking a leave of absence from his ministerial duties. 'There's a lot of speculation going around, and negative comments form the majority of it. If it's true that his leave of absence is linked to the PKR elections, then it would be irresponsible of him. 'If he wants to protest against his party, he should quit as PKR deputy president rather than taking a long leave of absence and allowing his ministry to be without its boss for so long. 'It's the ministry that's more important. Ministry first, party second,' Puad said in a Facebook post. While Rafizi did not attend yesterday's special parliamentary sitting to discuss the US tariffs, he had attended a PKR central leadership council meeting the day before. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PKR president, previously played down Rafizi's decision to go on leave, saying it was a non-issue as he would only be on leave for a few days. News of Rafizi's leave surfaced after Malaysiakini quoted an unnamed Cabinet minister as confirming it but dismissing talk of his resignation. This came amid speculation over Rafizi's political standing, especially after the defeat of several apparent allies in PKR's recent divisional polls. A slew of prominent incumbent divisional leaders were also knocked out, as members elected lesser-known figures. Rafizi is expected to defend his position as PKR deputy president in this month's central leadership elections. There is also speculation that he may be challenged by Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who is the home minister. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Umno backs renaming MRSM Kepala Batas to honour Abdullah Badawi

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Supreme Council has expressed full support for rebranding MRSM Kepala Batas as MRSM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in recognition of the late former Prime Minister's contributions to national development. Umno secretary-general and Majlis Amanah Rakyat chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision was made during the party's Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday (April 30). He said the renaming is part of the party's recognition of Tun Abdullah's legacy as the "Father of Human Capital Development". "The official declaration will be made on May 12 by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also responsible for Mara," he said on Wednesday (April 30). In the same meeting, Umno also expressed gratitude to voters in Ayer Kuning for their strong support during the recent by-election, which saw Barisan Nasional win with a commanding majority in all but one voting district. "We thank all component parties in Barisan, Friends of BN, and our partners in Pakatan Harapan for their tireless work in ensuring the success of our candidate," Asyraf said. He added that the result demonstrated increased support from Malay voters, multiracial communities, and especially the youth, indicating a clear rejection of divisive politics. "The people have rejected racial rhetoric, hatred, slander and fear-mongering tactics that attempt to paint Islam and the Malays as being under threat," he said. According to Asyraf, Umno will also hold its first-ever Patriotic School Convocation in conjunction with the party's 79th anniversary celebrations on May 11 at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, World Trade Centre, here.

'Timing must be right,' Nur Jazlan cautions against rushing Johor state election

JOHOR BARU: The Johor government should not rush to dissolve the state legislative assembly to pave the way for a state election, even though the favourable public acceptance towards the current administration. Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said there was still much that the state government could do for the people in Johor. "For me, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has done a good job. As such, the state election can be held at any time after the current term ends. "But it is also important to assess public support and acceptance, including the policies and services implemented by the Menteri Besar, the Exco line-up, and the elected representatives. "This is to obtain an indication that the timing is right for holding the state election. There is no need to rush, what is important is that much can still be achieved during the remainder of the term," he said after the Meriah Raya Outreach Programme here last night. On a related matter, Nur Jazlan said voters aged 18 and above, who will cast their ballots in the 16th General Election, must be given sufficient awareness and understanding of the country's democratic system. He said this would help the younger generation make informed choices and avoid confusion when choosing their representatives. "Young voters are like white canvases…it's our duty to shape their thinking responsibly. This is not about partisan influence, but to ensure they understand the true purpose of democracy. "I don't want our youth to be misled by political propaganda or false information spread on social media, especially those that exploit sensitive issues like race, religion, and royalty (3R)," he said.
