Skip Summerfest traffic. Here's how to get to the festival in 2025 without driving

One of America's largest music festivals is returning to Milwaukee's lakefront this summer with dozens of new headliners taking the stage. Milwaukee County Transit System announced this month it is offering several transit options for festivalgoers traveling to Summerfest 2025 without a car. Summerfest runs three weekends from June 19-21, June 26-28, and July 3-5. Here's some options on how to get to the festival this year without a car. These Milwaukee County Transit System transit options will take you to or near Henry Maier Festival Park (the Summerfest grounds): MCTS shuttles offer nonstop direct access to the festival entrance outside the Mid Gate. Three Summerfest shuttles will run about every 15 minutes from College Avenue, Brown Deer Park or Hales Corners Park and Ride lots. Shuttles are cashless; passengers can pay using the Umo app, WisGo Card, most credit cards, Google Pay and Apple Pay. Round-trip fare is $12 for riders ages 12 and up, and $6 for youth and seniors and those with qualifying disabilities. The first shuttle leaves at 11:30 a.m. with the last buses departing Summerfest Mid Gate at 12:30 a.m. MCTS Connect: The Connect 1 BRT line is available to Summerfest riders with stops at The Couture on Michigan Avenue and Lincoln Memorial Drive. Buses will run more often on Saturday, leaving every 10 minutes. MCTS Regular Service: Several MCTS local routes will get you close to the grounds. CapMetro's new fare payment system begins March 1

The Brief CapMetro is unveiling a new fare payment system The current CapMetro app, along with the physical and virtual AMP cards, will be going away. In their place, two new apps will launch: the Umo app to pay your fare, and the Transit app to plan your ride Later this spring, "tap to pay" will launch AUSTIN, Texas - CapMetro is unveiling a new fare payment system next week. This comes after riders voiced their frustration with the current system. "We've heard from our customers, frankly, that it could just be easier that when you get aboard a vehicle, they just want to get on and go," said CapMetro Executive Vice President for Experience and Engagement Samantha Baez. RELATED:CapMetro board approves fare payment system upgrades Local perspective It comes after riders experienced some bumps in the road when it came to paying for their ride. "It just wouldn't scan," said Tavia Alaine. "It would charge you, like, up to 24 hours after the fact." Alaine said she and her fiancé's digital AMP card accounts would mysteriously lose money. "$8 was taken off of my fiancé's AMP card all at once," said Alaine. She said it happened a few times over several months. When they went into their accounts, they saw something equally strange: ride after ride, with identical dates and times, on "Bus Line 0". "That line doesn't exist," said Alaine. "I'm like, what the heck?" Alaine says a total of around $30 was deducted from their accounts. They were able to get some of it refunded. People on Reddit reported similar issues. "I would not say it's common, but we are aware of it," said Baez. "We are not changing our fares, but we are changing the way you pay for fares." Why you should care The current CapMetro app, along with the physical and virtual AMP cards, will be going away. In their place, two new apps will launch: the Umo app to pay your fare, and the Transit app to plan your ride. Later this spring, "tap to pay" will launch. "When you board a vehicle, and you've got a credit card or debit card, you'd be able to tap that," said Baez. One of the most noticeable changes riders will see is new validators, which are being installed on all CapMetro buses. Baez says CapMetro tested them out, with a 100% success rate. "We're really looking to modernize and improve the customer experience," said Baez. Other new changes include: the 7-day and 31-day passes being eliminated, and new reloadable fare cards will launch. If you use cash or a paper pass, those will stay the same. Fare-capping policies will remain the same as well. "Let's say you go to scan your debit card, and you get to that third time you're going to scan. We'll say, you know what? Actually don't. You've paid enough for today. You've hit your fare cap," said Baez. Some riders say even with the upgrade they still have some trust issues. "I don't know why they have to keep implementing new systems," said Alaine. But CapMetro says they'll be working to make the transition a smooth one. "We're going to be out there in person, ready to transfer people from one system to the other," said Baez. "We're here to be flexible and we're here to help out." What you can do While the new system launches on Saturday, March 1, the old 7-day and 30-day passes will continue to work until April 1. CapMetro drives ahead with new fare payment system, app

AUSTIN (KXAN) — CapMetro is officially moving ahead with a new fare payment system, following approval by its board of directors Monday. The transit authority's current app will retire this spring, with the new fare payment system set to launch on March 1. Officials said the goal of the new system will be to streamline operations and upgrade payment source options, including tap-to-pay technology. With the new technology rollout comes the need for new fare scanners, or validators. Those are being installed within CapMetro's current fleet, with all new validators expected to be onboard come mid-February. CapMetro riders will need to download the Umo app to pay for fares and the Transit app to help coordinate their trip plans and track bus arrivals. There will also be a new reloadable fare card available 'that reduces single-use waste while retaining fare capping cost savings benefits for frequent riders.' PAST COVERAGE: CapMetro drives ahead with new fare payment system, app With the new reloadable cards coming online, CapMetro will retire its digital 31-day and seven-day passes; instead, digital payments down the road will employ daily and monthly fare caps so riders don't overpay for CapMetro transit services. 'Anything we can do to improve the customer experience makes it easier for people to try transit and improves the overall satisfaction for everyone—our customers, operators, visitors and occasional riders as well, 'said Samantha Baez, CapMetro's chief experience and engagement officer. 'These upgrades simplify the payment and boarding processes and lay the foundation for a smoother transit experience in Central Texas.' CapMetro told KXAN last month the transit authority is working to integrate both payment and trip-planning services into a singular, streamlined app in the future. The goal is to have those fare payment resources added into the Transit app, Baez told KXAN, adding there could be a possible mid-2025 progress update on those efforts. More details on those changes are outlined online. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
