PHOTO: AFP Listen to article Workers in the UAE who have recently lost their jobs can now submit claims for compensation under the country's Unemployment Insurance Scheme, provided they have been subscribed for at least 12 consecutive months. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), eligible workers must file their claim within 30 days of termination through the official website of the Involuntary Loss of Employment Scheme (ILOE) — Authorities have emphasised that before submitting a claim, the worker's employer must cancel the employee's work permit, a necessary step for the process. The Unemployment Insurance Scheme aims to offer financial support to those affected by job loss, helping them manage expenses while they search for new employment opportunities. The scheme is part of broader labour reforms in the UAE designed to enhance workforce protection and economic resilience. Workers are encouraged to visit the official ILOE platform to review eligibility requirements and the step-by-step claim process.

UAE says Unemployment Insurance Scheme subscribers can get up to Dhs20,000 per month

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) has outlined four conditions for eligibility to receive compensation under the Unemployment Insurance Scheme. The compensation is paid monthly at 60% of the insured's salary at the time of subscription, up to a maximum of Dhs20,000 per month for three months from the date of unemployment. The ministry specified conditions to be eligible for the compensation: the insured must have a continuous subscription period of at least 12 months, he must not have been dismissed for disciplinary reasons as per the Human Resources Law, the compensation claim must not be fraudulent or based on deception and the insured must not be employed by a fictitious establishment. According to Mohre, compensation payments will be suspended if the insured secures new employment during the eligibility period. It is worth noting that the Unemployment Insurance Scheme covers private sector and federal government employees, both citizens and residents. Excluded groups include investors (owners of the establishments where they work), domestic workers, temporary contract workers, minors under 18, and retirees receiving a pension who have joined new employment. The scheme has two categories, the first of which includes who receive a basic salary of Dhs16,000 or less. Those pay subscription fee of Dhs5 per month (Dhs60 annually), with a maximum monthly compensation of Dhs10,000. the second category includes those who receive a basic salary exceeding Dhs16,000 and the subscription fee is Dhs10 per month (Dhs120 annually), with a maximum monthly compensation of Dhs20,000.

'The forum enables participants to exchange experiences, address challenges, and explore promising opportunities to meet the future needs of labour market," he said. The UAE's business environment is experiencing remarkable growth, HE Al Awar asserted, revealing that private sector establishments have recorded a 17% growth by the end of 2024, while the workforce grew by 12% and skilled labour by 13%. These developments were facilitated by the UAE's efforts to modernise labour regulations and create an empowering and secure work environment, he explained, citing key initiatives like the new visa programmes designed to attract global talent, as well as the enhanced social protection programmes, such as the Unemployment Insurance Scheme, Savings Scheme, expanded health insurance coverage to cover all categories of workers, and the expansion of the Wage Protection System (WPS) to include domestic workers. 'These initiatives reinforce the UAE's commitment to enhancing the wellbeing and quality of life of the diverse workforce living and working in the country, which includes a wide range of nationalities', HE Al Awar noted, adding that 'due to progressive labour policies and multi-stakeholder collaboration, the UAE labour market now ranks first globally in nine competitiveness indicators, including labour force participation, employment rate, talent attraction, and work flexibility'. 'People are at the core of the UAE's development and growth strategy,' her stated. 'The UAE is committed to leveraging all resources and capabilities to promote sustainable education, drive innovation and attract top talent.
