SPM top achievers to get full scholarships at UniKL, UPTM, says DPM

KUANTAN: Students with 10As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination will be awarded full scholarships to study at Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Universiti Poly-Tech Mara (UPTM). Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said students, who obtained 10As and above, would be eligible for the scholarships if they choose to pursue higher education at both institutions. "The initiative is to ensure outstanding students are provided an opportunity to further their studies without any financial burdens. Insya-Allah (God willing), if the student obtains 10As and above, UniKL and UPTM will approve their applications. "I have referred the matter to the Mara (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) director-general (Datuk Zulfikri Osman) and it has been agreed by its chairman (Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki)," he said when launching the national-level Yayasan Pelajaran Mara (YPM) squad at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Silver Jubilee Hall here today. Present were Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Asyraf and YPM chairman Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said. Zahid, who is also rural and regional development minister, said students with 5As to 7As would be given an opportunity to further their studies at UniKL and UPTM. Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) chairman, assured students with less-than-stellar SPM results that they could choose to join the TVET programme. "What about students who secured only three credits in their SPM? Do they have a chance to further their studies?.... Do not worry, as they can choose to pursue further studies at 1,399 TVET institutions in the country. "Since the TVET intake for July was opened on April 15, 126,000 applications have been received from students nationwide. TVET promises a bright future," he said. Zahid said TVET was no longer a second choice and Mara, through YPM, would continue to serve as an institution to support the welfare and education needs of the youth, including those with low academic grades. On the YPM squad, Zahid described it as a strategic initiative designed to strengthen youth for a greater role as agents of change in social, educational, and community development.

Zahid: 10A Bumiputera SPM students guaranteed places in UniKL and UPTM

KUANTAN, May 24 — Bumiputera students who obtain 10As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination are guaranteed places in two institutions under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said MARA had also agreed to offer full scholarships to outstanding students who were pursuing their studies at Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM). 'But I also want to give an opportunity to students who obtained 5A to 10A to be given a place at the university,' he said in his speech before launching the 2025 National Level MARA Education Foundation (YPM) Squad at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Silver Jubilee Hall here today. Also present were Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and MARA chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. The YPM Squad was mobilised as a platform to expand access to quality education to rural and B40 students, while also fostering the values of leadership, volunteerism, entrepreneurship and unity among the younger generation. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, also advised students who are less outstanding in academics to continue their studies in the field of Technical Education and Training and Vocational (TVET) in 1,398 institutions nationwide. 'Although applications for admission to TVET institutions for the July session only opened on April 15, I am very grateful that the number of applications has jumped to 126,000,' said Ahmad Zahid who is also the chairman of the National TVET Council. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said he would be requesting an allocation of more than RM4 billion for MARA's expenses in next year's budget to be presented this October. He said the allocation was, among other things, to empower the nation's agenda, including to carry out various educational programmes that benefit the young. Meanwhile, Wan Rosdy said the state government was strengthening its commitment to producing young leaders through the Pahang Lead Programme by approving an allocation of RM2 million for its implementation this year. He said the programme, which was first introduced in 2024, was a strategic initiative of the Pahang Foundation and the Pahang Education Department, involving more than 261,000 secondary school students throughout the state. Zahid: Speed up TVET ecosystem to produce more engineers

LANGKAWI: A new ecosystem in education, mainly in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), must be accelerated to achieve the aim of producing 60,000 highly skilled engineers, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said student intake into engineering programmes must also be increased and given more focus. 'The country currently needs 60,000 engineers but we are only able to produce about 6,000 a year. 'We must expedite the development of a new learning ecosystem to meet this target. 'We will also focus on school leavers from fully residential schools, besides Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) and private Maahad Tahfiz, to promote engineering,' he told reporters after witnessing the signing of five Memoranda of Agreement between Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) and five industry players in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima'25) here yesterday, Bernama reported. Ahmad Zahid said more Maahad Tahfiz graduates will be recruited to pursue engineering programmes at UniKL and Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM), especially in the aerospace field. He said there are currently 1,962 students enrolled in aerospace courses at UniKL, including 129 huffaz graduates from Maahad Tahfiz Ulul Albab. 'I am grateful that these huffaz students are well-received not only by UniKL MIAT but also by industry players, as they are able to grasp the syllabus introduced to them and adapt quickly in practical settings,' he said.
