UniMAP implements Madani solar project in Sabah
KANGAR: Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has been given the mandate by the Prime Minister's Department to coordinate the implementation of the Solar Madani project in Sabah, involving the installation of nearly 4,000 units of solar lights in the state's rural and interior areas. UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli said the implementation of the high-impact project is in line with the country's desire to promote the use of renewable energy and expand access to lighting in areas that lack basic infrastructure facilities. "As a technical university focused on innovative solutions, UniMAP is very honoured to be given this responsibility, which we believe will strengthen basic infrastructure and improve the quality of life of rural communities through the use of environmentally friendly green energy technology. "The implementation of this project not only elevates the role of the university as a driver of sustainable development but also enables the involvement of the academic community to contribute to the well-being of the community, especially in Sabah," he said in a statement today. Zaliman said the first phase of the programme began with a pilot project in Tawau, which involved the installation of 40 solar light poles in several villages. He said the villages were identified through a strategic collaboration between UniMAP and the PMD, as well as the active involvement of the local community. "UniMAP is also responsible for carrying out continuous monitoring, technical audits and maintenance support so that the solar lights installed function optimally in the long term," he said, adding that it would involve students and researchers in fieldwork in line with the university's approach of integrating knowledge with real practice. Recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, at the launch of the pilot project in conjunction with the Sabah Madani Tour 2025, stressed the importance of such initiatives in saving long-term costs, strengthening environmental sustainability and strengthening relationships between the government, educational institutions and the people. – Bernama
