Meghalaya prepares to conduct blackout exercise in 3 districts

Shillong: Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) has directed that mock drills in Meghalaya be carried out on May 7 in three locations — Shillong in East Khasi Hills district, Jowai in West Jaintia Hills district and Tura in West Garo Hills district. The objective is to educate the public, including school children, on how to protect themselves in the event of an attack. Instructions also include conducting crash blackouts to conceal key infrastructure and sensitive locations, and to practice emergency evacuation procedures. This directive comes in the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, following the deadly Apr 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, where 28 people were killed by Pakistan-backed militants. The Mock Exercise on Air Raid Precaution measures will be conducted on Wednesday 4 pm onwards. Senior staff officer and additional PRO of Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards, Paul Shylla said the air raid siren will be sounded at 6:30 pm and there will be a "black-out" exercise (power-shutdown) for two minutes immediately after the siren is sounded. "The general public is requested not to panic as this is being done as part of a mock exercise for air raid," the official statement underscored.
