Participate in ‘lights off protest' against waqf amendments in large numbers: Muslim clerics
The United Muslim Forum (UMF), a panel of religious figures, on Wednesday urged the public to participate in a symbolic protest against the waqf amendments by turning off the lights of their houses and places of work on April 30 for 10 minutes beginning 9 p.m.
The Batti Gul Ehtejaj (lights off protest), the UMF stated, is a part of a series of demonstrations against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025. 'We are appealing to people to join this protest in large numbers. Please turn off your lights for 10 minutes from 9 p.m.,' an office-bearer of the panel stated.
The UMF lauded the efforts of khateebs of masjids in spreading awareness about the waqf legislation, and urged them to continue to do so.
The panel condemned the 'wrongful criticism' of the Supreme Court, as seen largely on social media, over the waqf legislation hearings, and sought to know why the apex court was being targeted.
