Special Representative Leonardo Santos Simão concludes his visit to Côte d'Ivoire, calls on all Ivorians to act together

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, concluded yesterday a two-day working visit to Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The objective of the visit was to strengthen the partnership and reaffirm the United Nations's support to Côte d'Ivoire in its efforts to consolidate peace, democracy and development. During his visit, the Special Representative held a series of meetings with the Ivorian authorities and various stakeholders. He was received in audience by the President of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, H.E. Mr. Alassane Ouattara, with whom he exchanged views on various subjects relating to domestic political issues and the latest security developments in the sub-region. The Special Representative also held talks with the Minister of Defense, Téné Birahima Ouattara, the Mediator of the Republic, Adama Toungara, members of the Independent Electoral Commission, and political stakeholders. Mr. Simão also met with members of the diplomatic corps and the UN country team. The Special Representative praised Côte d'Ivoire's leading role in strengthening regional integration and consolidating peace in the sub-region. He stressed the importance of seizing the opportunity of the forthcoming presidential elections to further strengthen democracy and preserve economic gains in Côte d'Ivoire. In this respect, he reiterated the United Nations's support for peaceful elections, and called on all Ivorians to act together in the interests of Côte d'Ivoire and its prosperity. The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, in coordination with the United Nations Country Team and other partners, will remain committed to supporting Côte d'Ivoire's efforts for peace and development. As part of his continued engagement, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel(UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, yesterday concluded a two-day working visit to Accra, Ghana. During his visit, the Special Representative was received in audience by the President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama. The Special Representative praised Ghana for promoting home grown effective peace building mechanisms and its commitment to preserve the gains of regional integration. He also met with the Minister of Interior, the National Security Advisor, National Security Coordinator, Special Envoy for the Sahel, acting Executive Secretary of the Accra Initiative, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, the West African Ambassadors, and the United Nations Country Team. With his interlocutors, M. Simão discussed various issues pertaining to peace and security and exchanged on ways to strengthen regional mechanisms to address the challenges facing the countries of the sub-region, in particular terrorism. He also stressed the importance of continued cooperation and reaffirmed the United Nations's commitment to strengthen its partnership with Ghana. The Special Representative commended Ghana's leadership role in regional affairs, and reiterated UNOWAS engagement to continue working closely with the authorities and people of Ghana to promote peace, security, and development. Special Representative Simão praises Mauritania's key role in regional stability

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, today concluded a visit to Mauritania. This visit is part of UNOWAS' continued commitment to support efforts to consolidate peace, stability and development in the sub-region, especially in the Sahel. During his mission, the Special Representative was received in audience by H.E. Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. He also met with Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, as well as the United Nations country team. With his interlocutors, the Special Representative discussed the political, humanitarian, security and development challenges facing the sub-region and stressed the importance of strengthening regional cooperation to address them. He praised the work done by Mauritania during its presidency of the African Union and its key role in promoting regional stability. He also commended the efforts of the Mauritanian authorities in promoting an inclusive dialogue. The Special Representative reiterated the commitment of the United Nations and UNOWAS to support Mauritania in its progess towards sustainable development and the consolidation of democracy.
