Meet the woman behind 'ambitious' Carlisle HR business

Claire McLean was always destined to start her own business. The daughter of parents who ran their own construction and housing development company, commerce and entrepreneurialism were constant topics of conversation during her childhood. Originally from Lancashire, Claire studied photography in Edinburgh then worked as a technical expert in a contact centre for creative software company Adobe. Keen to further her career she joined an IT recruitment company and was embedded with Royal Bank of Scotland, where she worked on the recruitment of thousands of IT consultants to help with its merger with Natwest. "It was extremely fast paced and I learnt quickly how to deal with people," said Claire. "There was a lot of internal and external stakeholder management.' She then took on a role with United States-headquartered electronics manufacturer Plexus, in Kelso, in the Scottish Borders, before moving to Gretna and working as HR lead for McVitie's, in Carlisle, and then as HR director for Story Contracting. However, within months of joining Story, Claire was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Following two years of treatment, she set out as a self-employed HR consultant in 2016, partly to seek more flexibility in her own working life. Demand for her services soon began to grow and her multi-award winning company Realise HR now employs 10 people, working with national and international clients including Specsavers, electrical retailer AO and snack food company Pladis. In Cumbria, the business works with well-known companies including Playdale Playgrounds, in Haverthwaite, south Cumbria, major infrastructure contractor Morgan Sindall and H&H Insurance Brokers, in Carlisle. 'The work is extremely varied,' said Claire. "All within a day we can be advising a small business on people related problems and in the next breath we could be coaching CEOs and delivering a culture change programme for a global PLC. "We've got an ambitious growth agenda and strategy taking us right through to 2028. "We will continue to grow our UK and international footprint as a challenger brand to mid-tier management consultancies.'
