Winners of the 1814 Commemoration poster contest to be named
PLATTSBURGH — The New York State Art Teachers Association Region 5 has again partnered with 1814 Commemoration Inc. for the 2025 Battle of Plattsburgh Poster Contest. Students in fourth grade in Clinton and Essex counties were asked to design a poster that depicted their vision of the historic events that occurred during the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814. The posters were judged by art teachers and the four winners will receive certificates of excellence and cash prizes. The city of Plattsburgh traditionally sponsors the contest and Mayor Wendell Hughes will present the awards at a ceremony at 10 a.m. June 18 at City Hall. 'Buttons' and event booklets will soon be available for a $15 donation in local stores and businesses. Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Weekend In just about three months, downtown will come to life with community members commemorating one of Plattsburgh's most beloved historical events, the annual Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration, this year celebrating the 27th consecutive commemoration. As the countdown to the kickoff on Sept. 11 ticks down, 1814 Commemoration committee members have been busy collaborating with local community groups, businesses and musicians in finalizing the events. The event schedule includes a wide variety of activities for the whole family. On Sept. 11, the Ceremony on Crab Island kicks off the 2024 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration, followed that afternoon with a memorial service at Fort Brown and the Riverside Cemetery Memorial Ceremony. The evening is topped off by a special 'History Talk' session at Trinity Church. On Sept. 12, there are more ceremonies in the morning, followed by live music and entertainment downtown throughout the day and evening, a concert in front of City Hall, topped off with the 'Rockets' Red Glare' fireworks display later that night. Sept. 13 and 14 will be music and activities starting with the Cannonball 5K run/walk on the Oval, the Children's Old Time Village Fair each day, the ever-popular BOP Parade, Beat Retreat, Food Court, Bed Races, more history talks and period music in Trinity Church, a British Tea, the United States Army Band in concert at the Strand and the Macomb Ball. There will be live period reenactors at the 'Grand Encampment' portraying 'Living History' through exhibits and military demonstrations, Kids' Games, Museums, Fire Engine Pull and more.
