Dog Attacks on Postal Workers Are on the Rise, According to USPS. Last Year There Were More Than 6,000
There were over 6,000 dog attacks on postal workers in 2024, the USPS said, marking a 200-case increase from 2023 California and Los Angeles rank as the top state and city, respectively, with the highest number of incidents The agency released the statistics as part of its National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, which kicks off Sunday, June 1 For some letter carriers in California last year, dogs weren't exactly man's best friend. The United States Postal Service (USPS) announced in a press release on Thursday, May 29, that the number of incidents involving dog attacks on the agency's employees rose to over 6,000 in 2024. That is up 200 more cases from 2023. Of the top 10 states with the greatest number of dog bites towards postal workers in 2024, California was ranked first with 701. That was followed by Texas with 438, Ohio with 350, Illinois with 344, New York with 322, Pennsylvania with 316, Michigan with 231, Florida with 210, Missouri with 207 and North Carolina with 169. Meanwhile, Los Angeles led the top American cities with the most dog bites at 77, according to the USPS. Coming in second was Houston with 65, and followed by Chicago with 57; St. Louis with 47; Cincinnati with 44; Dallas with 43; Kansas City and Cleveland tied with 40; San Diego with 35; Denver with 34; and San Antonio and Philadelphia tied with 32. The latest statistics coincide with the Postal Service's National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign that will begin on Sunday, June 1, with the theme, 'Don't let your dog bite the hand that serves you.' As part of the campaign, the agency is offering tips to dog owners on how to control their pets when a letter carrier approaches to deliver mail to their residence. The tips include keeping canines inside the home or behind a fence, away from the door or another room, and on a leash. The USPS also recommends that children do not take the mail directly from the letter carrier since the dog may interpret the carrier as a threat to the child. Canine attacks on postal employees can cost owners thousands of dollars, according to the agency, in terms of "medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement costs, and pain and suffering" for the worker. The USPS also stated that their letter carriers are trained when it comes to observing dogs in an area and being aware of a potentially dangerous situation. Among the things they've learned include not startling a dog, keeping their eyes on the animal and not attempting to pet or feed it. Mail service could also be stopped if the letter carrier feels unsafe around a dangerous dog on the route, added the USPS, which means the dog owner's mail would have to be picked up at their local post office. If the issue is not resolved, then the dog owner may have to rent a post office box to continue receiving mail. 'Dog bite attacks on postal employees are preventable,' Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager, said in the press release. "The most important message for our customers to remember during the 2025 USPS National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign is keep your dog secured and away from the carrier as the mail is being delivered. Help ensure the safety of everyone in our communities.' Last November, two letter carriers in the Dedham area of Massachusetts were attacked by canines in separate incidents as they were delivering the mail. 'Both Adam and Jeanette are back to work, and we commend their healing strengths, positive attitudes and commitments to their jobs,' Dedham Animal Control said in a statement at the time, as reported by Fox affiliate WFXT. 'Both of these incidents were preventable and neither was the fault of the Letter Carrier.' In 2022, Pamela Jane Rock, a Florida postal worker, died after she was attacked by five dogs when her postal vehicle broke down while on the job. Authorities said that Rock, 61, was waiting for help with her vehicle when the dogs broke through a fence, escaped and mauled her, NBC News reported. Read the original article on People

Wyden aims to bring Oregon's voting model nationwide with Vote at Home Act
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) reintroduced a bill on Friday that could change the way Americans vote across the United States. Initially introduced by Wyden in 2017, the Vote at Home Act would give eligible voters the option to vote by mail (including via drop-off site), provide pre-paid envelopes to return ballots and would automatically register citizens to vote at DMVs. Under the bill, voters who live in states with in-person, same-day voter registration would still have the option to vote at a polling station. Oregon man who set sail with his cat arrives to cheers in Hawaii The Vote at Home Act would also send ballots in the mail weeks ahead of Election Day, while providing funding for the United States Postal Service to cover costs associated with mailing ballots to and from voters. 'With Trump taking over the Oval Office, far-right legislators across our country are more emboldened to make voting more difficult for millions of Americans,' Wyden said in a press release Friday. 'Taking off work to vote in person – often waiting in long lines for hours – isn't an option for so many voters. Voting is a fundamental constitutional right. It should be easy, and bringing the Oregon Way of vote-at-home nationwide will guarantee that every eligible voter can make their voices heard.' Wyden noted the reintroduction of his bill follows passage of the Republican-led Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require voters to prove citizenship when registering to vote. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The SAVE Act was introduced in January by Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) who says the legislation is necessary to protect against ineligible voters from participating in U.S. elections. 'American elections belong to American citizens, and the public's confidence in those elections is the cornerstone of our republic,' Roy previously said. 'We in Congress have a duty to our fellow citizens to provide that confidence and put concrete enforcement in place to ensure that our elections and our sovereignty cannot be hijacked and influenced by foreign nationals who have no business voting in this country.' Some state officials, including have raised concerns about the SAVE Act. DON'T MISS: How would the SAVE Act impact PNW voters? Proof of citizenship explained This also includes 17 Democratic state attorneys general — including Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield — who sent a letter in early April to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), urging them to oppose the bill. 'This law just makes it harder for people to vote,' Attorney General Rayfield said. 'We can protect the integrity of our elections while still making sure that every legitimate voter has an equal opportunity to cast their ballot without obstacles or discrimination.' In their letter, the attorneys general said cases of non-citizen voting in the U.S. are 'extremely rare,' pointing to several studies and an audit of Georgia's voting rolls by the Secretary of State's office, which found 20 non-citizens registered to vote out of 8.2 million residents and nine of the 20 non-citizens had a record of voting, as reported by the Associated Press. Portland infrastructure at risk due to gradual sinking, study says According to the attorneys general, the bill would also require expensive documentation, such as passports or birth certificates to match voters' current names – which could be difficult for some, including married women, whose legal name no longer matches the name on their birth certificate. 'Over 21 million voting-age citizens do not have ready access to a passport, birth record, or naturalization record,' the coalition wrote. 'And 80% of married women would not have a valid birth certificate under the SAVE Act because those women chose to adopt their partner's last name.' The bill also mandates in-person presentation of the citizenship documents, which effectively eliminates online voter registration systems, which is available in 42 states, the attorneys general argue, noting this could also disenfranchise active-duty service members who cannot return to their local election offices. Alice returns from Wonderland: African crane back at Washington zoo after two-day escape Wyden is joined by several Democratic colleagues backing the bill, including Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass). 'Voting by mail has worked in Oregon for years. It's quick and secure—helping folks in red, blue, and purple states safely make their voices heard in our elections,' Sen. Jeff Merkley said. 'This shouldn't be a partisan issue. Expanding vote by mail nationwide is a secure way to ensure all eligible voters can exercise this constitutional right.' 'Oregon was the first state to enact full vote by mail in 1995, an effort led by both Democratic and Republican Secretaries of State,' said Oregon Congresswoman Val Hoyle, (D-04), who introduced the House companion of the Vote at Home Act earlier this year. 'We have seen the positive impact that mail in voting has had in Oregon – not only does it improve access for eligible voters, but every ballot has a paper copy making it the most secure form of voting. Voting is a Constitutionally protected right and I'll fight to make sure every eligible voter can make their voice heard. I am proud to introduce legislation with Senator Wyden that does exactly that.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Memorial Day 2025: Stock market, banks, and retail stores — What's open and what's closed in US
Memorial Day 2025 falls on Monday (May 26), marking a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the US military personnel who have died in service. While it is a solemn day of remembrance, it also signals the unofficial start of summer, with many Americans taking advantage of holiday sales and travel opportunities over the long weekend. Here's what you should know about what will be open or closed this Memorial Day. Federal offices, including post offices, courts, schools, and most government agencies, will be closed on Memorial Day. The United States Postal Service will not operate on May 26, and most FedEx and UPS delivery services will be unavailable, with limited exceptions for special deliveries. Branches of major banks such as Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, Citibank, and JPMorgan Chase will also be closed. Wall Street will observe Memorial Day, with both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange closed on Monday, May 26. Trading will resume on Tuesday, May 27. The next scheduled closure will be on June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Many retail stores remain open on Memorial Day, allowing consumers to shop ahead of the summer season. Major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Macy's, and Kohl's will be open with varied store hours depending on location. Sam's Club will be open for Plus members from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and for Club members from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, Costco will remain closed for the holiday. Many popular restaurant chains will remain open on Memorial Day, offering Americans plenty of dining options during the holiday. Favorites such as Starbucks, McDonald's, Dunkin', Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, and Taco Bell will serve customers throughout the day. Casual dining spots like Olive Garden, Buffalo Wild Wings, IHOP, Applebee's, and Longhorn Steakhouse will also welcome guests, making it easy for families and friends to enjoy meals together while commemorating the day. Though Memorial Day is widely seen as the unofficial kickoff to summer and a time for sales and travel, it remains 'the nation's foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women.' Established officially as a federal holiday in 1971 and observed on the last Monday in May, it originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War, when Americans decorated the graves of fallen soldiers. The Memorial Day weekend often sees record numbers of Americans traveling. Meanwhile, retailers capitalise on the holiday with major promotional sales, making it one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.
