United Way of Bemidji Area welcomes new board members
Jun. 2—BEMIDJI — The United Way of Bemidji Area has announced Sue Hendricks and Gary Johnson as the newest members of its Board of Directors. After retiring from teaching in the Bemidji School District, Hendricks served as one of the 2024 Co-Chairs for the United Way's annual Campaign for the Community. Under her fundraising efforts, the organization raised $768,150 to support area programs. Johnson is the former CEO of Paul Bunyan Communications and recently retired after 36 years with the company. He has also served the Bemidji area as a Rotarian and board member of Greater Bemidji Economic Development. "Now retired, both have made a lasting impact on our community through their leadership and dedication to Bemidji, and we're thrilled to have them bring their passion and expertise to the United Way board," a release said. Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive to take place May 10
May 6—BEMIDJI — All community members and area businesses are invited to participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 10. Sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers and United Way of Bemidji Area, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will benefit the Bemidji Community Food Shelf. Community members are asked to simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable, non-expired canned or boxed items, such as baby food, peanut butter, soups, cereals, laundry soap, dish soap, deodorant, personal care items and such, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 10. Donated items should be packaged in non-breakable containers. Letter carriers will collect the donations and deliver them to the Bemidji Community Food Shelf. In addition to the one-day food collection by the Post Office, collection boxes are available to accept your donations at the downtown Post Office lobby and Raphael's Bakery all week for early drop-offs. United Way impact grant applications available for local nonprofits
Mar. 21—BEMIDJI — The 2025 United Way of Bemidji Area grant application process is open for nonprofits who serve clients in Beltrami County. Guidelines and application materials are available online at To be considered, agencies must be incorporated; not-for-profit and IRS tax-exempt with 501(c)3 documentation; be non-discriminatory; have active, rotating volunteer leadership that represents diverse elements of the Bemidji area; and have sound financial program management, a release said. In addition, the agency must provide a local community service based on documented need(s) within one or more of United Way's community impact areas: * Youth Opportunity (Education): Preparing young people to realize their potential from cradle to career. * Financial Stability (Basic needs): Creating a stronger financial future for every generation. * Healthy Community (Health): Improving health and well-being for all. Applications, including financials, will be reviewed by a local volunteer committee, the Community Investment Cabinet. Members of the committee will make site visits to all applying agencies to ensure donor dollars are well spent and results are delivered, the release said. United Way announces Housing Trust Fund program awardees
Feb. 6—BEMIDJI — The United Way of Bemidji Area's Housing Trust Fund, in partnership with Beltrami County, allocated funds totaling $49,500 to St. Philip's Conference of Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Bi-County Community Action Program. St. Vincent de Paul has received funding to directly address the urgent housing needs of low-income individuals and families in Bemidji. With this grant, St. Vincent de Paul can act quickly, often within 24 hours, to meet with individuals, assess their needs and provide immediate assistance to secure housing, a release said. This grant empowers St. Vincent de Paul to provide faster, more efficient support for new housing placements and crisis intervention. Bi-County Community Action Program has been awarded funding to perform essential repairs on two critical housing units in Bemidji, enabling the organization to continue its mission of providing affordable, stable housing for low-income families. Planned repairs include sheetrock replacement, painting and flooring upgrades, new fixture repairs, window, cabinet and door replacements. The repairs will be carried out by a local contractor, supporting both housing stability and the local economy, explained the release. This initiative will create safe and operational housing for homeless, low-income families working with local housing programs, helping them overcome significant barriers to stability. These investments mark a critical step toward addressing housing challenges in Beltrami County, providing life-changing support for families in need and strengthening the entire community, added the release.
