Body found after shooting at student apartment complex in Columbia, SC cops say
A man was killed Saturday in a shooting at an apartment complex in Columbia, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department. At about 6 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 1000 block of Southern Drive, the sheriff's department told The State on Sunday. That's the Redpoint Columbia apartments, a complex that is marketed for students in the area near the University of South Carolina campus. The apartment complex is in the area between Shop Road and Bluff Road, about 2 miles from Williams-Brice Stadium. Deputies found an adult inside of an apartment building, and the man had been shot multiple times, according to the sheriff's department. EMS was called and both those emergency responders and deputies attempted to save the man's life, but he died at the scene, the sheriff's department said. The Richland County Coroner's Office, which was also called to the apartment complex, has not publicly identified the victim. No other injuries were reported. There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a possible motive for the shooting was not available. No arrests have been reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff's department. University of South Carolina student is missing, police ask for help in search
A search is underway for a missing teenager who's a University of South Carolina student. Donaven Dempsey was publicly reported missing by the Columbia Police Department Saturday. The 18-year-old has not been seen for days, police said. Dempsey was last seen May 8 when he left his hometown of Spartanburg and returned to Columbia, according to police. There was no word if Dempsey was considered a runaway, or if he was alone when last seen. Police did not say if foul play was suspected in Dempsey's disappearance. Dempsey has not been in touch with loved ones since he was last seen, police said. The teen was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, a black sweater with neon green on the inside and blue jeans, according to police. Anyone who has seen Dempsey, or has information about him, is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip. The USC Police Department has also asked for help finding Dempsey.
