New state initiative aims to keep kids active and off the phone

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Boys and Girls Clubs of Rochester hosted the state's Parks and Recreation Commissioner Randy Simmons on Thursday as he presented what the governor called the 'Unplug and Play Initiative.' The mental and physical wellbeing of children was a key part of Governor Kathy Hochul's 2025 State of the State, something she said this initiative aims to address. Randy Simmons (pictured on the right) joins Boys and Girls Club of Rochester on Thursday Feb. 20 to discuss new proposed cellphone policies New York State lawmakers are working through. Simmons also addressed potential federal policy changes. Tax cuts, inflation, childcare and affordable housing are just some of the things the state is focusing on. When it comes to this initiative in particular, unplugging from smart phones is a must. From tree to table: The sweet journey of maple syrup 'We're just out here trying to help everyone realize just the big agenda, and the big list of work that we have to do is a lot of work ahead, but we're committed because it goes a long way in our community,' Simmons said. 'Devices need to be monitored and balanced. When you're in school, all we're saying is eyes on the teacher.' Hochul has been pushing for a state-wide cellphone ban in schools during classes, in the hallways and during lunch. The plan, which requires approval from legislators, would take effect in the next academic year. The idea of this initiative at its core though, according to the governor's office, is to pour more funds into playgrounds, community centers, affordable sports programs and other recreational opportunities to keep kids active and off their phones.
