‘We gotta retire together': Ex-Aaron Rodgers weapon talks Steelers reunion

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers saga has given rise to other speculation around Mike Tomlin's side, with the team certainly needing an option out wide for their expected quarterback. The need is even more stark following the Steelers' trade of George Pickens. The Steelers have reportedly called the Miami Dolphins about tight end Jonnu Smith and might be in talks with the Atlanta Falcons for Kyle Pitts. Marcedes Lewis, who was Rodgers' teammate in Green Bay, was also rumoured for a reunion. But it isn't the case. Mercedes Lewis opened up about the possibility on the Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams, revealing that he and the Steelers haven't had conversations about reuniting with Rodgers. "It's always been something A-Rod would bring up. Even when we were in Green Bay, he was like, 'hey, we gotta retire together.' Nah, we haven't talked about playing with the Steelers, no," Lewis said. Lewis isn't young at 41, but was fit for all 17 games for the Chicago Bears last season. He might not be coming to aid the incoming Steelers' QB, but the team surely needs to find Pickens' replacement.

DeSean Jackson compares college football to NFL free agency

Former NFL star DeSean Jackson is a few months from his first season as a head coach at HBCU Delaware State, but he's already dealing with the way NIL is changing college football."This process has been different for me. The reason why I say this, is I have some players coming in my office asking like 'coach, I want this amount of money and I'm going to the highest bidder," Jackson said in a recent interview on the Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams. The now 39-year-old former Cal Bears receiver tried to put himself in his players' shoes, but he had a tough time. "If I would have went into Nick Saban and Pete Carroll's office back then and been like 'I want this and I want that - they would have looked at me like you better get out of here." Yes, Jackson admits this is a different era. 'I honestly look at this era now as free agency. It's almost like an NFL system. It's like a farm system to the NFL,' Jackson said. 'The NCAA, they're going to have to figure this out. There's no (salary) cap on it. Some schools are going to be able to pay these guys millions of dollars. And then some schools like us we don't really have the resources - HBCU or black college - we don't really have the resources to compete with Oregon or Alabama or al these other schools and we're a Division I school." Jackson says that despite the lack of resources, he's happy with the results he's gotten at Delaware State. He says much of that is due to the relationships that he has. 'I may not be able to offer a million dollars. I may be able to offer $20k in NIL, but my name may be able to make up the rest of that money." DeSean Jackson is hosting a megacamp on June 7 that will feature former NFL star and Miami Hurricanes legend Clinton Portis. He also revealed that talks are on-going between Delaware State, Norfolk State and the Philadelphia Eagles to move the DSU-NSU game featuring Jackson coaching against Michael Vick. "It may be a different date. We're trying to work on a date," Jackson said. "It may be Oct. 30. We're trying to get that at Lincoln Financial Field. We're trying to get that at the Eagles' stadium."Jackson said that things are going great on Delaware State's end and that they are waiting on Norfolk State to accept. No announcements have been made, though. The post DeSean Jackson compares college football to NFL free agency appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Copyright HBCU Gameday 2012-2025

Packers veteran WRs embracing opportunities to teach rookies Matthew Golden, Savion Williams

Packers veteran WRs embracing opportunities to teach rookies Matthew Golden, Savion Williams Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur is seeing his veterans in the wide receiver room "embrace" the addition of two top draft picks at the position to start the offseason workout program. Veterans such as Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed are helping teach first-rounder Matthew Golden and third-rounder Savion Williams the important details of the position early on in the process. "I think we have a very, very competitive receiver room. I think it's as deep as anybody in the league. I love how our guys go out there and compete and push each other," LaFleur told Kay Adams of "Up and Adams Show." "It's been pretty cool to watch the veterans, although there's a first-rounder coming into the room, a third-rounder coming into the room, just how they've embraced those guys and taken them in. They are coaching them up on the field." Wide receivers coach Ryan Mahaffey recently shared a moment where Reed was helping teach Golden after a drill. LaFleur caught another teaching moment from Doubs, who talked with Golden about a route during the offseason program. "We were out there earlier today, and I went over to tell Matthew something about one of his routes, and I was just about to start talking, and Romeo Doubs grabbed him and started talking," LaFleur said. LaFleur loved the chance to defer the teaching responsibility to a veteran player at a position where big investments were made. The Packers are returning Doubs, who has 12 touchdown catches over the last two seasons but is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and Reed, who led the team in receiving each of the last two years. Also returning is Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton and Malik Heath, and Christian Watson will eventually return from an ACL injury suffered in January. The Packers are young at receiver but not inexperienced -- Doubs, Reed, Wicks, Melton, Heath and Watson have all played a lot of football for LaFleur in recent years. Helping Golden and Williams along as rookies will help uphold the standard in the receiver room and continue building leadership on the team overall. "That's a pretty cool thing. That's something we're stressing with our team," LaFleur said. "It's important to develop the leadership that is needed that when you get into those tough division games or playoff games you have a player-led team that can get you through those moments." Steelers Rookie QB Ready to Fill Massive Shoes

The Pittsburgh Steelers' chase for a franchise quarterback has fallen flat on its face since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 campaign, but Will Howard plans on filling that void. During an appearance on the "Up and Adams Show" at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere, the sixth-round pick reminisced about watching Roethlisberger play while growing up and said that he wants to become a franchise face with a similarly gritty style for the Steelers. "They need a gritty guy," Howard said. "Growing up, for me, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, it was Big Ben. And Big Ben, he was that guy. He was Pittsburgh. He was the Steel City, the blue-collar, the gritty guy. I want to be that, too. I want to bring that edge, that energy. I think I did a pretty good job of it at Ohio State, and I like to pride myself on that. I'm gonna try and bring it to the Steel City." Howard will find it tough to work his way onto the field as a rookie if Aaron Rodgers signs with the team, but he can certainly lay the groundwork for a successful career in Pittsburgh by learning from the four-time MVP and treating the upcoming season as a redshirt year of sorts. The 23-year-old accumulated plenty of experience throughout college, first throwing for 5,768 yards and a program-best 48 touchdowns across 27 starts at Kansas State before transferring to Ohio State ahead of the 2024 season. There, he led the Buckeyes to their first national title in a decade while posting 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 16 games. Howard has seemingly turned heads within the Steelers' organization following rookie minicamp, and he's even rubbed elbows with Roethlisberger by appearing on his "Footbahlin" podcast while also keeping in contact with him as he becomes acclimated to his new surroundings. There's plenty of hype surrounding Howard in the early goings of his professional career, and he plans on exceeding even the wildest expectations placed upon him. Packers' Matt LaFleur Addresses Jaire Alexander's Health And Future With Team

The Green Bay Packers have a talented roster from top to bottom, and it was one of the reasons they made back-to-back playoff appearances, including a crushing 48-32 road win over the number two seeded Dallas Cowboys in the 2023 Wildcard Round, while being the youngest team in the league. Still, Green Bay had room to improve its roster heading into the 2025 season. They drafted wide receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, edge rushers Collin Olliver and Barryn Sorrell, and offensive lineman Anthony Belton. However, even with those additions, the most significant boost the team can get is if Jaire Alexander remains with the team. Advertisement The Packers have internally expressed frustration with Jaire Alexander's inability to stay on the field. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the team explored trade options involving the star cornerback in February. However, as reported on May 7, the Packers and Alexander were negotiating a revised deal to keep him in Green Bay, though no resolution has been reached yet. On the Wednesday, May 21st edition of the Up & Adams show, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spoke about the relationship between Jaire Alexander and the team heading into the 2025 season. Green Bay Packers HC Matt LaFleur answers questions from the media during the NFL Annual League Meeting© Jim Rassol-Imagn Images "JA (Jaire Alexander) is a great player," LaFleur said. "Unfortunately, he's been kinda snake bit the last couple of years. He's missed a lot of time. So it's hard to play up to your potential when you're not on the grass." Alexander has missed 34 of Green Bay's past 68 games. He will turn 29 in February, and his ability to stay healthy moving forward is uncertain. Still, the best-case scenario for the team and the player is for him to return, and Packers franchise quarterback Jordan Love is vouching for that. Advertisement "I need to reach out to Ja, see what the deal is. Ja, he has his own world going on. I'm going to let him handle his own business and see what's going on," Love said during an interview with Kay Adams. "But that's my guy right there," Love said on the Up and Adams Show. "He's definitely a player we need back. Just the play style he plays with, who he is on the field. I mean, that's a guy we need to have around. So, we'll see what happens." Both sides should hopefully reach an agreement on Alexander's future soon. If he comes back, Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley will have a blast working with him alongside Nate Hobbs, Xavier McKinney, and Evan Williams in the secondary — a group that could end up being one of the best in the league.
