Police Station Closes for the Day After Pennsylvania Officer Dies by Suicide in Parking Lot

The Upper Providence Township Police in Montgomery County, Penn., announced that a police officer died by suicide on Monday, June 2 The department closed its station on Tuesday, June 3 to allow officers to mourn 'We appreciate the continued support from the community and our mutual aid partners,' said the police in a statementA Pennsylvania police department is mourning after one of their own died by suicide. The Upper Providence Township Police in Montgomery County confirmed the death of one of their officers, who has not been publicly identified, in a statement released on Monday, June 2. "Tragically, an Upper Providence Township Police Officer took his own life in the parking lot of the township campus this evening," the department's statement read. "There was no danger to the public at any time." 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family," they added. "We thank the public for their grace as we navigate this tragedy.' Police did not share any additional information, but according to ABC affiliate WPVI, there were reports of shots fired at the time outside of the police station on the 1200 block of Black Rock Road. On Tuesday, June 3, the police announced that its station is closed for the day 'to allow our officers time to mourn." The department went on to add that mutual aid officers from partner agencies in Montgomery County will patrol the township for the next few days. 'We appreciate the continued support from the community and our mutual aid partners,' the police concluded. PEOPLE contacted the township's administration for comment.
