‘Nuclear Verdicts' Sink Small Businesses

An alliance between personal injury lawyers and unscrupulous doctors has wreaked havoc on Texas small businesses by pinning them with massive lawsuits. The state Legislature is finally fighting back. So-called nuclear verdicts of $10 million or more in cases involving one or a few plaintiffs reached a 15-year high in 2023. Some of these verdicts were for fender-benders, and many were inflated by questionable medical bills produced by doctors and lawyers. A 2018 fender-bender in Upshur County, Texas, ballooned to a $101 million verdict. The plaintiff's personal injury lawyer had directed him to a chiropractor, pain specialist, and back surgeon who all happened to be frequent trial witnesses in the lawyer's cases.

Ribbon-cutting held for Lewis-Upshur Community Recovery Center

BUCKHANNON, (WBOY) — The Lewis-Upshur Community Recovery Center was introduced to the area during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning, where attendees were able to walk around the space and see some of the different features that the community recovery center has to offer. Some of the different services that are provided include counseling and group sessions, as well as other activities like yoga and art classes, according to 18th Judicial Circuit Community Corrections Program Director Cheyenne Troxell. She told 12 News that the reason the program chose this building instead of the Community Corrections & Day Report Center was to help reduce the stigma that comes with attempting to get help, and no drug testing is done in this building. VA hosts PACT Act Claims clinic in Clarksburg 'We're actually very blessed in Upshur County to have a lot of services,' said Troxell. 'But I think our addition of the different space and our hybrid model, […] combining traditional counseling with the holistic approaches is what works really well for the clients that we've seen.' Troxell stated that she feels this center will be a positive addition to the community because all of the services that the program will put on the monthly calendar are free to the community. Anybody is able to attend these events, and nothing additional is needed, such as insurance or a referral. According to Troxell, the 18th Judicial Circuit Community Corrections Program deals with a lot of clients and programs related to addiction. She added that almost anything can be addictive and addiction can manifest itself in many different forms (drugs, food, etc.), so they welcome anybody who's struggling with anything to stop by. The space is set up to be immersive, with murals and decorative backgrounds in many of the different rooms. There's also a sensory room in the facility, which Troxell said is for people who need different things to be able to heal. Troxell also told 12 News that she wants people who attended Wednesday's ribbon-cutting and open house to just think about how many needs there are of people that are around them in the community. Upshur Leadership graduating class holds Community Skills Share event

BUCKHANNON, (WBOY) — A Community Skills Share event was brought to the Upshur Parish House for the first time on Wednesday. This event was put on by Leadership Upshur Class of 2025, a cohort that Parish House Executive Director Isaac Casto belongs to. Casto said that at the Upshur Parish House, they thought that this event would be a 'really cool opportunity.' He added that he thinks there's a lot of skills and knowledge out in the community, and they were looking for a way to pull all of that together. 'We were happy to be involved,' Casto stated. 'That's what our mission is here, is to work together as neighbors, and we thought that [this event] really aligned with our mission.' Casto stated that the representative went over things such as checking and savings accounts, as well as mortgages and loan applications. There was another panelist who spoke to the community about foraging for food. To go along with this portion of the event, the Upshur Parish House had stations set up for attendees to make salads and lavender lemonade. In addition to that, a photographer stopped by during the event to speak on photography basics and how to edit photos. 'What we were excited about is we really see this as a way to network and community-build,' said Casto. According to Casto, the Upshur Parish House is often concerned with issues such as food insecurity, housing instability, and similar community needs. 'So these sorts of things help our neighbors connect with one another, those maybe needing help, and those that just wanna be involved,' he added. Casto said that he personally felt that this event was a great opportunity for community-building, and the Upshur Parish House is excited to continue moving in that direction. He added that hopefully, they can make this an annual event, so don't worry too much if you missed it this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
