Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the bus was carrying 42 Upsi students, eight men and 32 women, aged between 21 and 23, all from the east coast. Advertisement He said the bus, which was registered in Kedah, had been privately chartered by the students and the group departed from Jertih, Terengganu at 9 pm on Sunday and was en route to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when the crash occurred at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, Gerik, early this morning. 'This tragic accident has resulted in 15 fatalities. All the bodies are currently awaiting post-mortem. Thirteen of the deceased have been sent to Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital, while two others were taken to Gerik Hospital. 'Twenty-seven others - 23 women and four men - suffered injuries. The bus driver, aged 40, and his 54-year-old co-driver were also hurt in the incident,' Noor Hisam told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters today. Noor Hisam said that the driver and passengers of the MPV, namely a couple aged 37 and 36, as well as their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were also injured and taken to Baling Hospital, Kedah, for treatment. Advertisement 'Other than Baling Hospital, other injured victims were also taken to Gerik Hospital, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital and Taiping Hospital,' he said. He said police could not release the official list of the victims yet as the post-mortem process is still ongoing. He said detailed investigations are also being done, including from the technical aspects, human negligence, and past criminal records, with cooperation from all relevant agencies, namely the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) and the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (MIROS). 'The road where the accident occurred is winding and downhill (hilly)...It was dark and had no lights except for the area near Tasik Banding, but it is still too early to draw any conclusions. He described the heartbreaking incident, one that unfortunately recurs too often, as a solemn reminder for everyone to exercise caution and avoid rushing to their destinations. The Prime Minister and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, also extended their condolences to the families of the victims, praying that they find strength and resilience during this difficult time. A statement from the Hulu Perak operations control centre of the Civil Defence Force (APM) said that they received an emergency call from Gerik Hospital regarding the collision at 1.10 am. Advertisement 'Upon arrival at the scene, we found an overturned bus and a Perodua Alza MPV,' the statement read. The statement confirmed that 48 people were involved in the crash, with thirteen victims pronounced dead at the scene, while two more died in the hospital. Four others sustained injuries. It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak. Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said the ministry will provide all necessary assistance to those involved in the tragedy. The accident took place at 1.10am along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding in the town of Gerik in Perak state, according to reports in Malaysian media. News website Free Malaysia Today reported that the bus had been travelling from Jerteh in Terengganu towards Tanjung Malim in Perak. A four-man team from Gerik Fire and Rescue Station, who arrived at the site nearly an hour later, found the bus overturned following the tragic accident. The Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force said 13 people died at the scene, while another two died at a hospital. Seven others suffered serious injuries. In a June 9 Facebook post, Upsi confirmed the incident and urged the public to offer prayers to the victims. 'Upsi is always concerned about the welfare of students and will provide assistance and support to the next-of-kin,' it said.
