Crocodile and offspring captured in Weston, more still lurking

BEAUFORT: Two crocodiles were captured by the Wildlife Department near Sungai Weston around 7.30am on Tuesday, but many more are believed to still inhabit the area. Chairman of the Urban Development Committee, Amin Abas, said residents were shocked to see the captured crocodiles, including a 3.5-meter-long adult weighing over 100kg and a smaller one about 1 meter long, weighing around 30kg. The baby crocodile was found dead, and the adult, believed to be its mother, was weak and barely alive. Villagers, led by Village Chief Latif Abas, helped restrain the larger crocodile before it was handed over to the Wildlife Department, which will decide whether to release or euthanize it. Despite the capture, Amin warned that crocodiles are still active along the riverbanks of Kampung Laut Weston, Kampung Menengah, and Kampung Hulu. He urged residents, especially those fishing or collecting shellfish near the river, to stay alert. Parents were also advised to closely monitor children during river activities. Amin shared a recent incident where a crocodile attempted to attack a cat but mistakenly bit a house pillar, breaking its tooth, highlighting the danger posed to anyone near the water.
