Sedan Stuck in Frozen Minnesota Lake Goes Viral: ‘Not Something You See Everyday'
A car submerged in frozen White Bear Lake is raising eyebrows in Minnesota. Residents may be used to seeing cold temperatures turn lakes frozen, but a single sedan sinking in the center is a new sight. Related: Dog Gets Private Canoe Ride Across Frozen Lake After Falling Through Ice into Frigid Water 'It's definitely not something you see every day in Minnesota,' Karl Erickson, organizer of the Urban Ice Anglers, a group founded to help foster a passion for fishing among young people, told the Minnesota Star Tribune on Feb. 20. The 2008 Buick Lucerne that has called White Bear Lake its home for nearly a month has gone viral since Erickson began posting photos and videos of it on social media. 'People on the internet love making memes and weird stuff and I thought, 'How about make a meme to raise awareness for the nonprofit [and ice safety]?' ' Erickson told the outlet. "I put it on Instagram, and it just went nuts, like a million views," Erickson told CBS News affiliate WCCO. "The reaction on social media's just been all over the place, 'Oh there's a dead body in there.' " Fans far and wide can rest assured that there's no dead body trapped in the car. A 41-year-old resident accidentally crashed his car through the ice, Ramsey County sheriff's deputies said on Jan. 27, reports the Star Tribune. The man only has a few days left to remove it before a 30-day deadline expires and promised to do so, but weather conditions have made the task more challenging. According to Erickson, the submerged car provides a safe haven for fish seeking shelter from predators, which has given his students the perfect opportunity to catch them. In a video shared to the Urban Ice Anglers Instagram account last week, students can be seen sitting in a tent placed over the car. Holes have been drilled in the ice, and their rods have successfully caught fish. Car frozen into White Bear Lake becomes viral sensation
Cars on the ice are a common sight on White Bear Lake this time of year. But cars in the ice? That's out of the ordinary. "It's just such an interesting sight," Karl Erickson said. Erickson organizes the 10,000 Ice Anglers Project, a free program that gives thousands of kids a winter ice fishing experience that they wouldn't get otherwise. "The front end is on the bottom, and the back end is kind of encased in probably 12 to 15 inches of ice at this point," Erickson said. The story of exactly how this 2008 Buick Lucerne got here in the first place goes back to Jan. 27. Ramsey County sheriff's deputies said the driver of the car, a 41-year-old man from White Bear Lake, got out safely after his sedan broke through the ice. He allegedly told deputies he would get the car out. However, almost one month later, the car remains. Deputies said the owner of the car needs to somehow remove it, or he could soon face fines. Erickson has made the most of the iced-in Buick. His videos on the Urban Ice Anglers Instagram page have even gone viral. "I put it on Instagram, and it just went nuts, like a million views," Erickson said. "The reaction on social media's just been all over the place, 'Oh there's a dead body in there.'" Erickson said the car is even attracting fish, like bluegills, who may see the vehicle as safe cover from predators. The ice car is a good lesson as to why it's so important to check the ice before heading out, Erickson said, not only for the kids he teaches but clearly, adults as well. "That's why they say no ice is ever 100% safe and this is kind of one of those reasons that showcases, yeah that's true," Erickson said.

Buick Frozen Tail-Up in Minnesota Lake Becomes Ice Fishing Sensation
Your car may have been stuck in snow or ice a few times in your life — but trust me, you have never been Buick Lucerne-in-frozen-White Bear Lake stuck. According to a report by The Minnesota Star Tribune, the 2008 Buick Lucerne was being driven by a local 41-year-old man when it broke through the ice on January 27 and began to sink into White Bear Lake in the Minneapolis-St Paul suburbs, but the driver managed to escape through a window and walk to safety. A few days later, the car was spotted by Karl Erickson, a local ice fisher who teaches students as part of a non-profit Urban Ice Anglers program. He filmed a video of the frozen Buick to serve as a warning to others who drive on the Minnesota lake. Over the last several weeks, Erickson has posted a number of additional videos on the Urban Ice Anglers Instagram account, with the car acting as a prop in various ice fishing scenarios. At one point, he even drilled a hole next to the car and dropped an underwater camera in the lake, revealing several fish taking an interest in the submerged parts of the Buick. The videos are meant to be lighthearted, but also deliver a serious safety message: lake ice is never completely safe to drive on, and you should never drive on a pressure ridge. The owner of this Buick escaped with his life, but his wallet is going to take a hit. On top of the fact that the car is now flooded and likely a total loss, authorities gave the owner 30 days to have the car removed — which, as the images reveal, would be a tricky task in its current state. He will face fines of up to five times the cost of removal if unable to extract the car from the lake before the deadline. And in a matter of adding insult to injury, under a 2024 state law that aims to crack down on lake ice littering, he may be subject to an additional $100 fine. Buick frozen in White Bear Lake goes viral on social media
The Brief A viral video going around on social media shows a Buick stuck in the ice at White Bear Lake. Only the front half of the Buick fell in the lake, with the bumper frozen in the water. Anglers sat by it and fished. WHITE BEAR LAKE, Min - A viral video is going around on social media of a Buick stuck in the ice at White Bear Lake. It has been nearly a month, and it's still there while fish swim around it. What we know Anglers sat by the Buick and fished. They had their lines down right by its bumper. They even have a finder showing the fish under the car. What the anglers see "The front end of the car is actually on the bottom of the of the lake," said Karl Erickson of Urban Ice Anglers. Only the front half of the Buick fell into White Bear Lake. The bumper is sticking up out of the frozen water. "I took a little pitcher sitting there fishing on it, and we fished next to it today and caught a couple of bluegills," said Erickson. Buick turns viral Erickson has been back to White Bear Lake multiple times, making videos on Instagram to show people the frozen car. So far his videos have generated more than a million views. "I went and took a look at it, and kind of made a little video around what I found," said Erickson. What they're saying Erickson found the Buick about two weeks ago. With the recent cold snap, it may be some time before the car can be removed from White Bear Lake. "They said, it had been there a week, and now it's been so cold over the weeks since then that it's, it's that bumper is frozen solid," said Erickson. Now Erickson wonders how anyone can pull the Buick out of the lake with the ice thick enough for cars to drive on. "I've been kind of watching because I'd like to see the process because I think it's a pretty complex process," said Erickson. If you head to White Bear Lake to see the Buick, there are thin ice signs around it, so be careful. There's no word yet on when it could potentially be removed.
