38-year-old man arrested in Urbana on child exploitation crimes

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A joint investigation by the Urbana Police Department and a Kentucky Police Department resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old man on three child sex crimes Wednesday morning. On June 11, officers with the Urbana Police Department arrested Carson Zajdel at his residence in the 1900 block of N Lincoln Ave., officials said in a release. He was taken into custody without incident on the following preliminary charges: Indecent solicitation of a child Sexual exploitation of a child Possession of child pornography 4-year-old hurt in Danville hit-and-run; driver charged The arrest of Zajdel comes after a joint investigation between the Urbana Police Department and the Hopkinsville Police Department, based in Hopkinsville, KY. This investigation remains active and ongoing, and additional charges may be considered as evidence continues to be reviewed. According to Urbana Police, because of the sensitive and ongoing nature of the investigation, no additional information is being released at this time. Additionally, the department is asking anyone with more details on this situation to call them at 217-384-2320. Arrangements can be made for information to be shared privately with Urbana Police. URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A 25-year-old Urbana man has been arrested after threatening someone with a firearm in a road rage incident. On Saturday, May 24, Urbana Police officers responded to a call involving an armed subject on N Cunningham Ave. following a road rage incident. The victim reported being threatened with a firearm by the offender. Coroner identifies body found in Rantoul's Heritage Lake During the investigation, the Urbana Police Department worked with the University of Illinois Police Department to utilize their automated license plate reader (ALPR) system. This system allowed Urbana Police to quickly identify a vehicle connected to the incident. Information found from the ALPR system was shared with nearby agencies, which led to the Rantoul Police Department locating the vehicle in the 200 block of W Frost Street. Urbana officers then met with Rantoul officers and identified the driver as a 25-year-old man from Urbana. Further investigation led Urbana detectives to obtain a search warrant, which then led to the recovery of a firearm. URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Police Department is still investigating a murder from four years ago, and they are asking for the public's help through Crime Stoppers in solving the crime. The murder is that of Issah Musah on April 11, 2021. At around 4:37 p.m. that afternoon, the 46-year-old was in a yard letting a dog's friend out of a home, when a single person approached him and opened fire. One of the shots hit Musah in the back of the head. Champaign Police arrest man for DUI after he crashed his car into a house Officers responded to the area of the shooting — South Webber and East Fairlawn Avenue — and found Musah in the yard. He was taken to Carle Hospital and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where he died almost 30 hours after being shot. Over the years, detectives have followed multiple leads, including a silver four-door sedan that was seen leaving the area right after the shooting, but they are looking for more information. URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A 14-year-old boy from Urbana was arrested for having and intending to deliver marijuana on school property. The Urbana Police Department said the teenager was arrested on Thursday. Police said he was in possession of more than 500 grams of cannabis-infused edibles. The investigation began after a student needed medical attention; it was later determined that they had eaten cannabis edibles. Champaign Co. Sheriff's deputy accused of misusing funds from police support nonprofit Urbana School Resource Officers and officials with the Urbana School District launched an investigation, and officers were able to identify and apprehend the suspect. He was brought to the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center, and is awaiting court proceedings. The Urbana Police Department asks that anyone with additional information contact them at 217-384-2320. On Monday, the police department launched its Desk Officer Reporting System to allow members of the community to file police reports online. The system lets the community report minor incidents from anywhere at any time of day. Two arrested after Thomasboro and Philo burglaries Police officials said the new system should reduce call volume, improve report accuracy and let officers stay focused on emergency responses and public safety efforts. 'As we continue moving toward becoming a 21st-century department, innovations like DORSreflect our commitment to transparency, accessibility, and service,' officials said in a news release. 'Each milestone like this helps us modernize how we connect with the community and use resources more effectively.'
