V.J. Edgecombe declares for 2025 NBA Draft

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — Decision day arrived for Baylor basketball's top prospect with V.J. Edgecombe officially foregoing his sophomore season and declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft on Sunday. Edgecombe averaged 15 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game en route to becoming the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earning an All-Big 12 second team selection. Edgecombe leaves the Bears after one season at Baylor with the goal of becoming the highest drafted Bears prospect in program history, a mark set by both Davion Mitchell and Jeremy Sochan in back-to-back years as the ninth-overall selection in 2021 and 2022. The long awaited but expected decision leaves no Baylor Bear left on the roster from last season. The presumed top-five pick in this year's draft will wait to hear his name called on Wednesday, June 25th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. V.J. Edgecombe and Baylor hold off Mississippi State in final seconds to win 75-72 in March Madness

RALEIGH, N.C. — NBA lottery prospect V.J. Edgecombe had just four points at halftime of Baylor's first-round NCAA Tournament game against Mississippi State. That didn't concern Bears coach Scott Drew. The athletic Edgecombe responded with a big second half and finished with 16 points, including two clutch free throws down the stretch, to help the ninth-seeded Bears hold off the eighth-seeded Bulldogs 75-72 on Friday.

No. 9 Baylor survives and advances to Round of 32

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — The entire city of Waco held their breath collectively as a resilient Bears team survived a late Mississippi State charge to escape the Round of 64 with a 75-72 win over No. 8 Mississippi State. The Bears took a 37-32 lead into the halftime break, shooting 39 percent from the field on 13-33 from the field. Baylor widened that lead in the second half, extending the Bears advantage to double digits but the Bulldogs would not go away, cutting the deficit to just one point with 1:19 remaining. Two clutch free throws by Robert Wright III extended Baylor's advantage to three with 42.3 seconds left before the Bulldogs cut it to one. Two more clutch free throws from V.J. Edgecombe put the Bears up three, giving the Bulldogs a chance to tie with under 10 seconds remaining. Mississippi State had a look but Claudell Harris Jr.'s three pointer fell short off the rim but a missed free throw from Norchad Omier gave the Bulldogs .2 seconds to get a shot off which proved to be not enough time, sealing a narrow Baylor win. This is the sixth-consecutive Round of 32 appearance for Baylor Men's Basketball as the Bears advance to play the winner of No. 1 Duke/No. 16 Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. No. 9 Baylor edges out No. 8 Mississippi State in epic battle that comes down to shot in final second

After some snoozers on Day 1 of March Madness, Day 2 got started with an epic battle. The ninth-seeded Baylor Bears narrowly squeaked out a victory over No. 8 Mississippi State, 75-72, in a game that came down to the wire. Baylor coasted for the first 30 minutes of the game, leading by as many as 11 in the second half. But Mississippi State pulled away. With a chance to put the game away with 0.5 seconds left, Baylor went to the free throw line, but missed. That gave the Bulldogs a chance to call a timeout and gear up for a prayer. With 0.2 seconds left, they launched a Hail Mary from beyond half court that missed, giving Baylor the victory. Robert O. Wright III led Baylor with 21 points, while three others (V.J. Edgecombe, Langston Love, and Norchad Omier) also finished in double digits. Josh Hubbard's game-high 26 points were not enough for the Bulldogs. In all likelihood, barring a wild upset from Mount St. Mary's, the Bears will face Duke, the favorites to win it all.
