Same sex couple could very well form a family: Madras High Court
The Supreme Court might not have legalised same sex marriage, but such couples could very well form a family, the Madras High Court said recently. The bench of Justices GR Swaminathan and V Lakshminarayan said that in the Supriya Chakraborty Vs Union of India case the Supreme Court might not have legalised same sex marriage, but such couples could very well form a family. According to the Live Law, the bench was dealing with a habeas corpus petition filed by a woman stating that her lesbian lover's father had been detaining her against her will and thus approached the court to set the detenu at liberty. The detenu informed the court that she was forcibly taken to her home, beaten, and forced to undergo certain rituals to make her "normal." She also informed the court that she wished to go with the petitioner. Considering the detenu's wish, the court closed the plea and restrained the detenu's family from interfering with her personal liberty. The court also asked the police to extend adequate protection to the petitioner and the detenu as and when required. The court observed that the concept of "family" has to be understood expansively and marriage is not the sole mode to start a family. The bench also expressed discomfort in associating the word "queer" with homosexual persons. The court said that the sexual orientation of a homosexual person must be perfectly normal for him/her/them and wondered why it should be associated with the word "queer" which means "strange" or "odd."

TNEB told to pay Rs 10 lakh in damages to electrocution victim and son
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently ordered the Dindigul division of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to a woman, whose husband and son died due to electrocution in Kodaikanal in 2018. Justice V Lakshminarayan passed the order on a petition filed in 2022 by the woman, R Subbulakshmi. According to the order, on December 2, 2018, the petitioner's son Raja Pandi got electrocuted when he went to dry a towel on a clothesline at their house, unaware that a live electric wire had fallen on it. Her husband, Ravi, in an attempt to save his son, also met the same fate. Subbulakshmi claimed that for 10 days prior to the incident, there had been no power supply to her house owing to Gaja cyclone. Authorities had restored the connection without checking whether the electric lines were intact, she alleged. Saying that she had lost her husband and only son due to the negligence of the authorities, she sought compensation. Pointing out a Tangedco scheme providing Rs 5 lakh solatium to the family of electrocution victims, the judge ordered the superintending engineer (Dindigul) to pay Rs 10 lakh.

Madras HC puts interim stay on NEET-UG results
The Madras high court on Saturday imposed an interim stay on the declaration of NEET-UG 2025 results following a petition by 13 candidates, who alleged the entrance exam for admissions to undergraduate medical medical courses had been disrupted at a centre in the Avadi area in Chennai due to a power cut and water logging. The petitioners, all students from several districts of Tamil Nadu, who had appeared for the exam at the centre on May 4, told a vacation bench of the high court that the exam had thus, begun late. They also claimed the examination centre at Avadi got waterlogged due to heavy rains and the students were made to shift to another centre mid-exam. When the petition came up for hearing on May 16, justice V Lakshminarayan enquired if the students were shifted to another centre while they were writing the exam and if there had also been a power cut? The judge then granted the interim stay on the declaration of results saying the students must be granted a chance to plead their case. As per the petitioner students, at the Avadi centre, candidates had been instructed to report by 11 am for the 2pm exam. However, they were let inside the premises only at around 2.45pm. From 3pm to 4.15 pm, a power cut forced all candidates to continue writing in poor lighting conditions. It had also been raining and soon after rainwater began entering the centre premises, forcing the authorities to halt the exams and shift the students to another centre. However, none of them were granted any extra time to compensate for the inconvenience and such loss of time. Some of the petitioners have even asked that they be permitted to re-take the examination. In their petition, the students argued that such disruptions had violated their fundamental right to a fair opportunity under Article 21 of the Constitution. They urged the court to stay the result declaration and allow affected students to reappear for the exam. The court reiterated that students deserved a chance to present their case and thus, adjourned the matter to June 2 after halting the declaration of the results until then. Earlier this week, the Madhya Pradesh high court had also stayed the declaration of NEET-UG 2025 results after a similar plea from a student in Indore.

Laddu row: Suspension of dairy licence set aside by Madurai Bench of Madras HC
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday set aside the suspension of licence of AR Dairy Food Private Limited, which had been withheld after the firm allegedly supplied substandard ghee to the prasadam unit of TTD. Justice V Lakshminarayan remitted the matter back to the Central Licensing Authority under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, for reconsideration within a month, adding that the designated officer should pass an order whether to suspend the licence for all its activities, or for manufacturing, transportation and sale of ghee alone. The judge further observed that even if the officer decides to suspend the licence, it could only be an interim measure and therefore should not exceed more than six weeks, within which the officer should take a decision on cancellation of the licence by following the established procedures. He added that since he has passed the order over technical grounds, the company has to pay a cost of Rs 2 lakh to the licencing authority within two weeks. Till such a decision is taken, the judge permitted the company to operate its other units, except ghee and milk powder. The order was passed on a petition filed by the company challenging the suspension of licence on February 14. (Read the full report at www.
