Jenna Ortega Has Plans to Direct a Script She's Worked on for 10 Years

Jenna Ortega is looking forward to spending more time behind the camera. While Ortega was promoting The Weeknd's new film, Hurry Up Tomorrow, she and the singer spoke about her own desire to direct to V Magazine, which she previously told The Hollywood Reporter was her hope for her future back in 2018. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Wednesday' Season 2 Teaser Trailer and Premiere Dates Released by Netflix Christopher Landon Left 'Scream 7' Following Death Threats Over Melissa Barrera Firing: "I Did Not Fire Her" Sony Pictures Classics Sets New Release Date for 'Jane Austen Wrecked My Life' The Weeknd asked Ortega if she has a desire to tell her own stories and if she was working on anything, to which she said, 'I have a script that I've known that I was going to make for almost 10 years. It's weird because it's something that I thought of when I was younger and when I first started out in this field, and it's only now that I'm actually starting to take the steps to get it made, which is really interesting.' The Scream actress, who has a producing credit on Wednesday season two, explained how 'learning how to produce and being a part of projects in that way has informed me so much. There's so much that goes on behind the scenes that I wasn't aware of. I'm just putting the puzzle pieces together in my head. So I think I needed a few years of that under my belt to understand the order of doing things,' she said. 'Everything that I've done in my career, I feel like there's a reason why I didn't make this story at an earlier time, but I'm really excited about it. Then there are a couple of other things I'm trying to develop right now, but it's strictly off of being inspired by another actor or a writer, characters that I've never really gotten the opportunity to play before.' When asked if it would be tough to make something that she'd also be starring in, Ortega responded: 'This one in particular, I see myself in it, but I really want to direct. That's probably the main thing that I want to do. I see that for myself. I just feel that's the way my brain wants to work and think, and that's how I even view my acting sometimes.' She continued, 'I don't want to be in the things that I create in the future, but starting out, because I've created more leverage for myself with a name as an actor, I may as well use that as a stepping stone.' Jenna Ortega Says She Misses Anonymity She Had Before ‘Wednesday'

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega says she misses not being known prior to the success of the blockbuster Netflix series. Since the premiere of director Tim Burton's Addams Family series Wednesday on the streamer in November of 2022, Ortega's career has kicked into overdrive with roles in such blockbusters as Burton's supernatural comedy Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and more recently, starring turns in the horror comedy Death of a Unicorn and the romantic drama Winter Spring Summer or Fall. Ortega next stars opposite Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye in the psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, which opens in theaters on May 16. In a recent interview with The Weeknd for V Magazine, the music superstar asked Ortega if she missed her anonymity. 'Oh, most definitely. I mean, that was just a few years ago, I'd done some shows and was working in film, but it wasn't until that show, the day of the week [Wednesday], that just catapulted everything," Ortega told The Weeknd. "As grateful as I am, and it was a dream role, it was so nice to have had way less pressure.' Of course, before Wednesday, Ortega's star was on the rise with pivotal roles in the horror thrillers Scream and Scream VI, but there was a time before that that was daunting and thrilling at the same time. 'I love the hustle. There's something about the actor's come-up and struggle that I really enjoyed,' Ortega told The Weeknd for V Magazine. 'Sleeping in the cars, driving all around LA for auditions and waiting for weeks, feeling sick to my stomach that I wasn't going to get the job I really wanted. The adrenaline rush of it all was so exciting. 'I don't know if it's common, or if you can relate to this, but it kind of feels like you're perpetually in this loop of anxiety,' Ortega added. 'I hold so much more pressure and weight in my body than I ever did, and I think it's just kind of the expectation of it all.' Hurry Up Tomorrow opens in theaters nationwide on May 16. The logline for the film reads, "An insomniac musician encounters a mysterious stranger, leading to a journey that challenges everything he knows about himself." Jenna Ortega's Wednesday Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on Aug. 6 with Episodes 1-4 and will conclude on Sept. 3 with Episodes 5-8.

Jenna Ortega wants to direct the movie she's spent 10 years writing

Jenna Ortega isn't taking her newfound stardom lightly. Like the Dune two, Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, before her, she is avoiding the pitfalls of superhero movies to make things she wants to see. Now a producer on the second season of Wednesday and an executive producer on her new film with The Weeknd, Hurry Up Tomorrow, Ortega is already looking for the next step. In a new interview conducted by Weeknd for V Magazine, Ortega plans on putting on the puffy pants, picking up the bullhorn, and yelling that immortal word, 'Action!' on a movie she's spent the last 10 years writing. 'I have a script that I've known that I was going to make for almost 10 years,' says Ortega, who must've been 12 or 13 when she started writing it. 'It's weird because it's something that I thought of when I was younger and when I first started out in this field, and it's only now that I'm actually starting to take the steps to get it made.' Ortega says that while she sees herself acting in the film, she really wants to direct, which is 'the main thing I want to do […] I just feel that's the way my brain wants to work and think, and that's how I even view my acting sometimes.' Over the last few years, Ortega has continuously leveraged her power as an up-and-coming star and name above the title to shape the projects she makes. In 2023, she made headlines over the assertion that she 'just started changing lines' to Wednesday scripts because 'everything that [Wednesday] does, everything that I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all.' She later clarified that 'it's natural to be fearful of signing your life away and wanting some sort of agency or wanting confirmation that your voice would be heard.' Ortega also wisely read the writing on the wall regarding Scream VII and left the production after co-star Melissa Barrera was fired for criticizing the Israeli government. These kinds of experiences prepared Ortega for directing. 'I think I needed a few years of that under my belt to understand the order of doing things. Everything that I've done in my career, I feel like there's a reason why I didn't make this story at an earlier time, but I'm really excited about it.' More from A.V.
