Horse racing tips: Wednesday April 23

There are six horse racing meetings taking place across the UK and Ireland today, three of each code. They go jumping at Perth (1.48-5.32pm), Ludlow (2.38-5.15) and Taunton (5.25-8.00), with Catterick (2.00-5.10), Gowran Park (3.57-7.12) and Lingfield (4.50-7.50) staging Flat cards. Our nap of the day comes from the meeting at Perth and is an Olly Murphy-trained gelding who has enjoyed success over both hurdles and fences. Dan Fitch's selection: If you already have a Betfair account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 3.20 Perth – Class 3 Handicap Chase (2m) VOCITO won four of his seven races in 2024, three of those victories coming over hurdles and one, on his most recent outing, in a 2m 1f handicap chase at Plumpton in November. That was the seven-year-old's only race of the year over fences, but prior to that he had won novice hurdles at Worcester (twice) and Stratford, each time with Sean Bowen in the saddle. Bowen rides Vocito again here and is in decent form too, having partnered Haiti Couleurs to an impressive win in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Monday. So we're backing Olly Murphy's gelding to shake off his rust and claim another victory on his seasonal reappearance.

DENEMETHY looks the value pick in the GS Group Balnakeilly Novices' Limited Handicap Chase (2.18) over two and a half miles on the opening day of the three-day Perth Festival. The seven-year-old, trained by Fergal O'Brien – who has been firing in the winners over the past fortnight – has steadily improved since making his chasing debut in December, scoring at the second time of asking at Market Rasen over the Christmas period. The son of Flemensfirth has run well in defeat since, placed in each of his three subsequent starts, the last of which 50 days ago being his best performance, when just failing to catch subsequent winner Homme d'Un Soir by a head when returning to the Lincolnshire course, with the third, who was a further eight lengths back, also winning next time out. ‌ Later on the Scottish card, In the Phil Nelson Capercaillie Handicap Chase (3.48) over two miles, VOCITO can return after a break to score a second successive chase victory. The seven-year-old joined Olly Murphy's yard in May and won three novice hurdles before returning to the bigger obstacles when last seen in November, winning at Plumpton by a very easy 11 lengths ahead of Koenigsstern, who then won next time out. ‌ Wednesday's selections PERTH 1.48 LILOO D'ORES 2.18 DENEMETHY (NAP) 2.48 HORACES PEARL 3.18 FUN FUN FUN 3.48 VOCITO (NB) 4.22 PARISIAN FASHION 5.00 MAGGIES BOY 5.32 HAPPY INDEX LUDLOW 2.38 MORE COKO 3.08 THE BOLD THADY 3.38 TOMMYS CHARM 4.10 MANALA 4.40 CAPTAIN TOMMY 5.15 MADAJOVY
