District readies measures to tackle rain-related issues
T'puram: In view of the incessant rain in Thiruvananthapuram, district collector Anu Kumari took a set of measures to meet any unforeseen situation.
As many as 1,400 families residing on the banks of rivers, low-lying areas, and flood and landslide-prone areas were identified and necessary measures were taken to evacuate them when the situation arises.
"As of now, we have only yellow and orange alerts, but all measures were taken in advance if the alert turns to red or we face emergency situations. Nodal officers were appointed to coordinate rescue measures. District and taluk-level control rooms were opened and an additional one of the city corporation was also opened," said the collector.
As per direction of the collector, cleaning of drains and cutting of trees and branches that pose a threat to public were also completed.
People living on the banks of rivers and dams were given alerts.
Tahsildars were given instructions to keep camps ready if there is a situation that warrants the evacuation of people. Relief camps were opened and fully equipped to accommodate people during emergencies, but no one has shifted to the relief camps so far, informed the district collector.
To control flooding in the city, district administration opened the estuary at Veli, allowing water to flow to the sea.

Palode, Mankayam, Kallar, Vithura and Thenmala tourism spots were closed due to the heavy rain. Public is urged to avoid late-night travels, especially to high-range areas.
Meanwhile, minister VS Sivankutty visited several parts of the city, where trees were uprooted and a house at MSK Nagar near Attukal was damaged while trying to cut a tree. In the last two days, district fire stations received 294 calls, mostly regarding uprooted trees and traffic disruption.
