PC spared jail after sexually touching victims

A trainee police officer found guilty of sexually touching two women on a night out has been sentenced. Charlie Valente, 24, from Leeds, was given a two-year community order with 200 hours unpaid work at Leeds Crown Court. The West Yorkshire Police student officer was found guilty in May of three counts of sexual touching following an incident in November 2022. The force said Valente had been suspended from duty pending a misconduct hearing. Passing sentence Judge Andrew Stubbs told Valente: "You were drunk, boorish and believed you were untouchable as a sexual predator. You felt in a position to dominate the victims. "One of the victims was so drunk she did not know what was happening, but you continued even when she showed she was not interested. "During the trial, one of the victims described the impact of your actions on her personal life that she has been having to rebuild because of what you did to her, so these are serious offences." He told Valente that he "may seem sorry now, but he didn't seem sorry for what he did" during his trial. However, he noted that Valente had "matured considerably from the drunken 22-year-old he was" at the time of the incident. As well as the community order, he was told he would have to carry out a 90-day alcohol rehabilitation programme and 20-day rehabilitation programme. He was also ordered to pay £8,000 towards the cost of the case. Speaking after Valente was found guilty, Det Ch Supt Tanya Wilkins said: "What was reported to the police by the first victim was a pattern of behaviour by this student officer over the course of a night out that has made her extremely uncomfortable, including unwanted sexual touching. "As part of our enquiries, we reviewed CCTV and established that there was also a second potential victim. "She was identified and spoken to and again confirmed that she had not consented to the sexual touching she was subjected to." 'Great run' ends: Roberto Pizza closing to make way for young restaurateurs

Article content Roberto Pizza is set to have its last dining service Saturday evening, a few weeks shy of its 10th anniversary. Article content Article content The pizzeria was named after Ottawa restaurateur Roberto Valente, 46, who died in February 2015 after battling brain cancer. A portrait of him covers one of the pizzeria's walls. Article content Richard Valente, Roberto's brother and business partner of Fratelli restaurants and the pizzeria, said the decision to close had been in the making for a year, but it was still a difficult choice. Article content Article content For two decades, the Valente brothers opened several locations of Fratelli restaurants in Kanata and Westboro. Some of Roberto Pizza's menu, pizzas named after the Valente brothers and their children, will be available at Fratelli. Article content Their father, Pasquale Valente, 86, managed the pizzeria as a way to remember his son after his passing. Article content 'That was his place to go and honour Rob every day,' Richard said. Article content Pasquale was unable to speak with the Ottawa Citizen due to health concerns. Article content Taking its place on Preston Street will be another pizza joint: Schoolhouse Pizza. Richard said it was the 'right fit' to allow for a new generation of restaurateurs to settle in Little Italy. Richard and Pasquale wanted the new owners to move in time for the Ottawa Italian Festival, set to take place from June 6 to June 8. Article content Article content 'It's time to pass the baton onto the younger generation,' Richard said. 'We wanted Schoolhouse Pizza to have a few weeks to get ready, and it would just be a great introduction for them.' Article content Justin Laferriere, Schoolhouse's chef and partner, said they would be starting renovations in a couple of days. The idea of Schoolhouse Pizza began after Laferriere, an executive chef at Fairouz Cafe, expressed a desire to switch to casual dining. Article content 'It was becoming hard to find the pizza that I wanted to eat in the city,' Laferriere said. 'So I just decided to do it myself.'

Are Fiber Supplements the Natural Alternative to Ozempic? - Jordan News

When it comes to weight loss, the spotlight is often on the macronutrients—proteins, fats, and carbohydrates—while fiber tends to be overlooked as a simple dietary component. But what if fiber is actually the missing link to successful weight loss? اضافة اعلان In other words, could fiber supplements be as effective for weight loss as Ozempic injections and other slimming medications? According to Medical News Today, while consuming more protein is key to achieving good weight-loss results, fiber is also essential—not only for digestive health but for overall wellness. The Benefits of Fiber Studies have shown that fiber can help lower bad cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, and protect against heart disease. Recent research also indicates that fiber can promote weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity. However, U.S. statistics reveal that fewer than 5% of Americans actually meet the recommended daily intake of fiber—about 34 grams for men and around 28 grams for women. How to Increase Your Fiber Intake Lisa Valente, a registered dietitian at Massachusetts General Hospital, shares her favorite fiber-rich foods: 'I'd go with frozen berries—they're higher in fiber compared to most other fruits,' she says. She adds: 'When you buy them frozen, they're more affordable and accessible. Plus, they don't spoil quickly, so you can add them to smoothies, oatmeal, or yogurt.' Whole Wheat Pasta Valente's second pick is whole wheat pasta. She explains: 'Brown rice only has about one gram more fiber than white rice, but whole wheat pasta contains significantly more fiber than white pasta. It's a fiber-rich carbohydrate base for meals that you can top with vegetables or protein.' Her third choice is chia seeds, which provide a strong feeling of fullness and a powerful dose of nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids and a small amount of protein. Other high-fiber foods include apples, bananas, avocados, broccoli, sweet potatoes, legumes, and nuts.

17 unforgettable images from the Environmental Photography Awards

In 2024, fires burned more than 2.6 million hectares of South America's Pantanal biome. The wetlands have experienced a steep reduction in water coverage, making the area that stretches across Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia vulnerable to fire threats. A young tapir (Tapirus terrestris) managed to survive the blaze. Named Valente by caretakers, the tapir underwent treatment at the Caiman Ecological Reserve to heal his burn wounds. A touching photograph of Valente (seen below) in his dressings captured by Fernando Faciole took home the top prize in the Public Award category of the 2025 Environmental Photography Award. The 2025 Environmental Photography Awards honored images across five categories: 'Polar Wonders', 'Into the Forest', 'Ocean Wolds', 'Humanity versus Nature' and 'Change Makers: Reasons for Hope.' The competition also recognized winners for a Public Award and a Student's Choice Award. 'In the past fifty years, we have lost 73% of the world's wildlife,' President of the Jury, Ami Vitale, said. 'This stark reality underscores the urgent biodiversity crisis we face. The future of our planet is in our hands, and we cannot afford to feel overwhelmed or hope that someone else will address the problem. Continuous awareness and action are needed; conservation is not a one-day job. Photography plays a critical role in highlighting the interconnectedness of individual well-being and environmental health.' The shortlisted photographs will be exhibited in Monaco, on the Promenade du Larvotto, from June 3 to July 31, 2025.
