Lucy Phipps, a family lawyer from Weightmans, says: "Different factors can influence the length of time it can take, including court delays, but mainly it can take longer because of the time needed to resolve disputes over finances. "It can be extremely important not to finalise your divorce until a financial settlement is reached. This also needs to be recorded in a court order, and so, however keen you are not to remain married, it is always worthwhile checking this point with a solicitor before you apply for the final order of divorce." It's important to be aware that whether you apply for a divorce on your own or as part of a joint application, the process will still be expected to take the same amount of time. The rise of the 'quickie divorce' - does it exist? With over 1,000 searches each month for the term 'quickie divorce' in the UK, popularised by mainstream media, the terminology is often synonymous with celebrity divorces. Although a 'quickie divorce' gives the impression of a fast turnaround, there is no way to hurry along proceedings within the boundaries of the law. The phrase arose years ago, when it was necessary to cite the fault of one of the parties if you wished to avoid waiting for at least 2 years post-separation before being allowed to apply for a divorce. "This potentially can cause hardship if a party passes away prior to that settlement being converted into a legally binding order, because spousal pension benefits are lost. "Other mistakes can include remarrying prior to a settlement being reached, which may prevent your seeking any settlement at all, or divorcing in the wrong divorce jurisdiction, resulting in your obtaining a settlement worth less than that you might have obtained if you were divorced somewhere else." Understanding your legal rights and responsibilities is essential to achieving the best possible outcome post-divorce. Financial and parental disputes can cause delays When preparing for a divorce, several factors can delay the process beyond the typical timeframe. "One common issue is incomplete paperwork. For example, the initial application for a divorce or dissolution, the D8 form, must be properly completed before proceedings can start," says Lucy. How to prepare for the process - or get your 'ducks in a row' "The first step would be to get your documents in order to prepare for the divorce proceedings; this can include your marriage certificate, filling in the required D8 form, and starting to think about financial arrangements by gathering together information such as property agreements and bank statements," says Lucy. Meghan Markle called out for Archie's expensive pajamas in Mother's Day post: ‘Isn't relatable'

In this economy? Meghan Markle got ripped over her Mother's Day post, declaring she's 'juggling it all' while dressing her son, Prince Archie, 6, in a pricey pair of children's pajamas. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, took to social media on Sunday, May 11, to celebrate all the moms out there while including a photo of herself with the two children she shares with Prince Harry, 40 — Archie and Princess Lilibet, 3. Neither Markle nor her kids' faces appear in the snap, taken on what appears to be their Montecito, Calif., balcony. All of their backs are to the camera as she holds Archie and Lilibet in each arm, and they climb all over her. 9 Meghan Markle's Mother's Day post is being dissected by Internet trolls. Meghan Markle/Instagram 9 Some took issue with Prince Archie's pricey pajamas. meghan/Instagram 'Happy Mother's Day! Cheers to juggling it all with joy!' Markle's post began before directing the message to her children. 'And to these two gems – who still attempt to climb 'mama mountain', smother me with kisses, and make every day the most memorable adventure….being your mom is the greatest privilege of my life,' she continued. 'I, too, 'love you more than all the stars in all the sky, all the raindrops, and all the salt on all the french fries in all the world.' 9 The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share two kids: Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 3. Instagram / @aseverofficial 9 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently enjoyed Beyonce's concert — and tickets weren't cheap. Instagram/@meghan While her words seem nice enough, several saw fault in her post, especially when she claimed to be 'juggling it all' as her son is dressed in expensive sleepwear. Turns out, Archie's pajamas are seriously fancy and costly, leaving some to scowl at the princess' attempt to be relatable. His white and black sleepwear set is from the New York luxury label La Ligne and known as the 'Navy/white Enfant Bonne Nuit Pajamas,' as Hello! first pointed out. 9 Prince Archie's pajama set cost a whopping $75. Meghan Markle/Instagram 9 Others claimed Archie and Lilibet are 'always in pajamas.' Meghan Markle/Instagram While the stylish pajamas are no longer available on their website, the price of the button-up set was listed as $75 online. 'Meghan Markle's Mother's Day post includes a detail that proves she isn't the relatable mother-of-two she likes to seem,' Daily Mail posted on X. Others seemed to take issue with the fact that Archie and Lilibet seem to be 'always in pajamas.' 9 Social media users also slammed Meghan for not including her own mom in her Mother's Day post. Netflix 'These children are almost always in pajamas on social media as well which is bizarre. It's like she only sees them when they're going to bed,' someone shared. 'I've never seen them without their PJ's. When they put cream cheese on bagels at Valentines… When they doing cookies in the kitchen in the afternoon… When Lili was staring down at a game board w Serena… What…the Nanny's don't dress them either?' joked another. Some people ridiculed Markle for not including her own mom, Doria Ragland, in her Mother's Day post, and questioned why Prince Harry did not share a social media tribute to his wife. 'This is a Mother's Day post to HERSELF. It isn't a post honouring her own mother, Doria. Weird, huh? Also, why is there no message issued from Harry to honour the mother of his children?' one X user tweeted. 'Leave it to #MeghanMarkle to make Mothers Day all about her and not mention her own mother. Not a Happy Mothers Day to Doria, not a photo, not even a passing reference. Instead she congratulated herself on how amazing she is and how much her kids worship her. Very telling,' wrote a second. 9 Meghan Markle and Prince Harry married in 2018. Instagram/@meghan 9 The duchess at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025. / But not everyone was hating on Markle's sweet dedication. Some praised the princess for the adorable photo with her children. 'Meghan Sussex (née Markle) and Amber Heard haters are so bitter and hateful about them celebrating their children. The toxic patriarchy is seething, meanwhile the mothers are mothering on Mother's Day,' someone replied in defense of both Markle and Amber Heard, who announced on Sunday that she had welcomed twins. 'Meghan Sussex and her little ones are an enchanting sight on this wonderful Mother's Day,' added another. 'This Mother's Day photo by Meghan is so touching. Happy Mother's Day to you all,' tweeted a third. Archie's pajama set wasn't the only expensive clothing item worn during Markle's special day. In the photo, the duchess was sporting a pricey cashmere cream sweater from Brochu Walker that retails for a whopping $400, and that's only her top half. Despite failing to post a Mother's Day tribute to his wife, Prince Harry and Markle couldn't keep their hands to themselves while at one of Beyoncé's Los Angeles, Calif., stops on her 'Cowboy Carter' tour last week — and, based on their view, they likely dropped a pretty penny for the tickets.

Tariffs impact imported flowers ahead of Mother's Day

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — With tariffs, we often talk about car parts and electronics, but flower prices are also blooming. President Trump put out a baseline 10-percent tariff on all imported goods. This includes Columbia and Ecuador, where the vast majority of fresh-cut flowers sold in the U.S. come from. This piles on top of import taxes already in place. Ecuador had a 6.8 percent tariff so importing their flowers today levies a 16.8 percent tariff. The tariffs are not slowing down ahead of Mother's Day, according to Tom Parker. He is the owner of Churchland's Village Flower Shop. Parker said things are picking up, mainly thanks to last-minute shoppers. He already had 200 orders for delivery as of Friday morning and expected hundreds more before the weekend ends. When looking at flowers for mom, Parker recommends something vibrant. 'A vase of mixed flowers, pastel flowers,' he explained. 'Mom's like pinks and whites, bright colors.' Parker says recent inflation also made the price tags grow. Through the years, the demand never wilted. 'People always want to give mom or the girlfriends or wives flowers,' he said. 'It's a good gesture. Gets you out of the doghouse.' Many of Parker's flowers do in fact come from abroad. 'We get flowers from Canada, South America,' he said. 'We used to get them from California. Not so much anymore, but Canada has stepped up.' Parker hopes tariffs against Canada do not step up since shipping flowers on land is cheaper than flying them in. 'There's a lot of variables when they come out of South America, you know, going through airports, they have to be probed and checked for illegal substances,' Parker said. His advice to other florists — stay prepared, and focus on what you can control. Be it Mother's Day, Valentines or prom season, he said one thing is always certain. 'The true American man waits to the last minute anyway,' Parker said. In 2024, the U.S. imported about $2.2 billion worth of cut flowers and greens, with most coming from South America.
