Doritos and Other Snack Foods Could Soon Carry Warning Labels in Texas
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A Texas bill aimed at requiring warning labels on packaged foods containing certain additives, including popular snacks like Doritos and M&Ms, has advanced to the governor's desk after being passed by the state legislature. Newsweek contacted Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for comment on Tuesday outside of regular office hours via email and online inquiry form respectively. Why It Matters If enacted, Texas would become one of the first states to require such disclosures, potentially reshaping national food industry standards as companies often choose to implement changes mandated by major states nationwide to avoid regulatory overlap. Bloomberg said the legislation becoming law would be "one of the most substantive victories yet" for Kennedy's Make America Health Again movement. What To Know Senate Bill 25, passed unanimously in the Texas State Senate, mandates labels on products containing any of more than 40 additives which are currently legal under federal U.S. standards but banned or require warnings in other major Western nations or bodies. Ingredients covered by the list include synthetic dyes, titanium dioxide, bleached flour, partially hydrogenated oils, melatonin, and various food colorings. The label must state: "This product contains an artificial color, chemical, or food additive that is banned in Australia, Canada, the European Union, or the United Kingdom." Impacted products would include Nacho Cheese Doritos, PepsiCo Inc.'s Mountain Dew and Mars Inc.'s M&Ms, according to Bloomberg due to their use of synthetic dyes. Republican Governor Greg Abbott has not yet publicly stated whether he will sign the bill into law. More Justin Sullivan/Mike Mulholland/GETTY Enforcement will be managed by the state attorney general, and violations may incur penalties of up to $50,000 per violation plus reimbursement for enforcement costs. The legislation also establishes a state nutrition advisory committee, mandates 30 minutes of daily physical activity during the school day for grades below six, and instructs Texas schools to implement new nutrition education curricula. Senate Bill 25 was filed by Republican Senator Lois Kolkhorst and prioritized by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. Speaking to Bloomberg, Texas state Rep. Lacey Hull, one of the bill's sponsors in the House, said she received a supportive call from Kennedy after the bill passed the Texas Legislature. What People Are Saying Speaking to Bloomberg, Abbott's press secretary Andrew Mahaleris said: "Governor Abbott will continue to work with the legislature to ensure Texans have access to healthy foods to care for themselves and their families and will thoughtfully review any legislation they send to his desk." The Consumer Brands Association is urging Abbott not to sign the bill. Its senior vice president of state affairs, John Hewitt, said: "The ingredients used in the U.S. food supply are safe and have been rigorously studied following an objective science and risk-based evaluation process. "The labeling requirements of SB 25 mandate inaccurate warning language, create legal risks for brands and drive consumer confusion and higher costs." In a joint statement, a coalition of companies including Walmart Inc., PepsiCo and Mondelez, Coca-Cola Co. said: "As it's written, the food labeling provision in this bill casts an incredibly wide net—triggering warning labels on everyday grocery items based on assertions that foreign governments have banned such items, rather than on standards established by Texas regulators or by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration." What Happens Next The bill awaits a decision from Abbott, who has not publicly commented on his intentions. If signed, the law will take effect on January 1, 2027, and Texas will begin enforcing the new labeling and health education requirements statewide.

ServiceMaster Restore® and Hire Heroes USA Partnership Surpasses $500,000 Raised, Honored with "Partner of the Year" Recognition
Through the We Serve: Veterans initiative, ServiceMaster Restore is uniting its network, supporting veteran careers and making a lasting impact nationwide. ATLANTA, May 21, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- ServiceMaster Restore is proud to announce the success of its partnership with Hire Heroes USA, which has raised more than $500,000 to date and earned the brand recognition as Hire Heroes USA's 2025 Partner of the Year. The We Serve: Veterans campaign has galvanized ServiceMaster Restore franchisees, vendors and corporate teams nationwide to support meaningful career opportunities for veterans transitioning into civilian life. The partnership began in 2023 when ServiceMaster Restore, following its relocation to Atlanta under new ownership, sought a cause that could unite its corporate team and franchise network around a shared mission. Hire Heroes USA, also based in Atlanta, proved to be the ideal partner. "We needed a cause that could bring the entire franchise network together," said John Tovar, Group President at ServiceMaster Restore & Clean. "Hire Heroes' mission strongly aligns with ServiceMaster's values of serving those who serve our country, and we are looking forward to continuing to make a difference in communities across the country." To kick off the partnership, ServiceMaster Restore launched two golf tournaments on the East and West Coasts, inviting franchisees, vendors and clients to participate and sponsor the events. The response exceeded expectations, with strong engagement from across the network. In 2024, ServiceMaster Clean® also joined in on the partnership, and in 2025, BioClean™ did, as well. In 2024, the company expanded the initiative by launching a local activation program that provided franchisees with event toolkits, marketing resources, PR templates and individualized support to host fundraising activities in their communities. The brand also hired a dedicated staff member to serve as the main point of contact for franchisees seeking additional support. Last year, 16 local events were held, raising an additional $104,000 for Hire Heroes USA. In April, ServiceMaster Restore hosted its national golf tournament at TPC San Antonio, home of the Valero Texas Open. The event generated excitement by offering players the chance to experience a major PGA course, and it raised over $28,000 on tournament day with additional funds raised from sponsorships totaling over $180,000. The results of the growing initiative speak for themselves, with $502,205 raised to date. This translates to an estimated $34.6 million in economic impact through veteran job placements. "Our partnership with ServiceMaster is a powerful example of what's possible when a company leads with purpose. Their leadership and generosity—especially through the annual We Serve Golf Tournament—directly empower veterans and military spouses to build meaningful civilian careers," said Jamie Rimphanli, ServiceMaster's Hire Heroes USA Account Representative. "What makes this effort even more impactful is how ServiceMaster activates its franchise network—not only supporting the cause, but rallying together in a spirited competition to be the top fundraiser. It's more than a fundraiser; it's a testament to ServiceMaster's commitment to those who serve and the communities they strengthen." Beyond fundraising, ServiceMaster Restore has also focused on creating career pathways for veterans by connecting its franchisees to Hire Heroes USA's job board, helping match qualified veterans with opportunities across the ServiceMaster Restore network. "Our company is made up of a lot of hardworking, blue-collar Americans, many of whom are veterans themselves or actively hire veterans," said Claire Skinner, Local Marketing Support Manager at ServiceMaser Restore & Clean. "We thought, what better way to deliver on our commitment than to help veterans find valued careers beyond their service?" Looking ahead, ServiceMaster Restore aims to grow the We Serve: Veterans initiative even further, with goals to increase local events to 20–25 this year and continue raising the bar for corporate fundraising efforts. "Our goal is to keep building on the partnership, keep connecting the franchises where they can and keep helping them hire and retain veterans," said Skinner. "Every year, the goal is going to be to raise a little more and make a bigger impact." "My husband is a veteran, so Hire Heroes has a special place in our hearts. The military doesn't help veterans adjust to going back to the real world, so having an organization that focuses on their strengths, and placing them in jobs that suit their skill sets is a much needed service," said Seattle franchisee Alyson Horton. "We loved the idea of fundraising, and last year, we raised around $50,000. ServiceMaster Restore is all about serving people, so these types of community campaigns serve back to that core principle." Receiving the Partner of the Year award from Hire Heroes USA underscores the strength and impact of the relationship. "This partnership is still growing, and there are a lot more veterans that we intend to make an impact on," Skinner said. "It is so important to our entire system on both the corporate and franchisee level, and we are looking forward to helping change the lives of even more veterans in the years to come." Through its growing partnership with Hire Heroes USA, ServiceMaster Restore continues to demonstrate a deep commitment to honoring veterans, building stronger communities, and making a tangible difference nationwide. Who is Ryan Gerard, PGA Championship Leader at Quail Hollow
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Ryan Gerard is the early first-round leader of the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow as he makes his debut in this major. It looked like he played a different course than most of the field for most of his round, as he signed for a 5-under 66, one shot better than those tied in second. He opened his day with a birdie and bogey at the par-4 2 and 3. Gerard would make one more birdie to turn in 34 strokes. However, his back nine was when he went nuclear. The former UNC Tarheel made four straight birdies on holes 10-13. Then followed up with an impressive chip-in eagle from 58 feet at the par-5 15th. The touch on this chip for eagle 😮💨🦅 — ESPN (@espn) May 15, 2025 That eagle got him to 7-under on the day. However, part of the Green Mile (holes 16-18) got the best of him. Gerard made a par at the 16th, which caused many players like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler issues. He made bogey on 17 and 18, dropping back-to-back shots to close his round. The 25-year-old did not finish his first round like he wanted, but a lot of good came out of those 18 holes. Gerard currently leads the field in strokes gained tee-to-green with +5.186 and is third in approach-the-green at +2.919. More Photo byHe should still be very proud of himself because it marked his 13th par or better open round in his last 14 starts. His only over-par score to start a tournament came at the Valero Texas Open, where he finished solo second, his best of the year, per PGA Tour Communications. Ryan Gerard holds the clubhouse lead at the PGA Championship with a 66, his 13th par-or-better opening round in 14 individual stroke-play events this season. His only over-par opening round (73) this season led to a career-best runner-up finish at the Valero Texas Open. — PGA TOUR Communications (@PGATOURComms) May 15, 2025 Regardless, the Raleigh, North Carolina native leads the PGA Championship, which is not easy. Who is Ryan Gerard? Not many people know who Ryan Gerard is, so let's examine his career up to this point. Gerard attended UNC Chapel Hill and turned pro in 2022. He played with Ben Griffin in college and had one college victory at UNC, the 2021 Rod Myers Invitational. In 2022, he was the co-medalist at the 2022 U.S. Open qualifier at the Club at Admiral's Cove in Jupiter, Fla. He made his major championship debut at The Country Club for the U.S. Open but missed the cut after going 74-73. In his first year on Tour, he played in 22 events with 2 top 10s and 3 Top 25s. However, he only made 12 cuts and missed 10. Gerard went down to the Korn Ferry Tour and played in six events in 2023. Last year, he played in 26 events on the Korn Ferry Tour. He won the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD Synnex last June. In those 26 events, Gerard had 4 top 10s and 12 Top 25s while missing just six cuts all season. The big-time Carolina Panthers fan finished 13th in the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, which gave him exempt status through 2025. He has taken advantage of that status, too. So far in 2025, he has 14 starts, one runner-up finish, two Top 10s and six Top 25s. Gerard has also only missed two cuts this year. His best finish was, of course, at the Valero, but that came after a solo ninth at the Texas Children's Houston Open. Now he leads the PGA Championship by one shot. Will that continue for him, and will he shock the world by winning his PGA Championship debut? More Golf: Keegan Bradley's Ryder Cup Plan to Coerce Team USA Members Revealed

Rickie Fowler News Revealed Ahead of Truist Championship
It has been a long time since Rickie Fowler ranked among the top players on the PGA Tour, but the former world number four will be playing at the latest signature event this week. Fowler, a six-time winner on Tour who has finished at least tied-second in three of the four majors and also has a tied-third at the PGA Championship on his resume, has struggled for top form in recent times. Since the start of the 2024 season, Fowler has just one top-10 finish to his name, having recorded eight in the 2022-23 campaign. Advertisement But he will be present at the Truist Championship this week. Rickie Fowler watches his shot off the first tee during the final round of the Valero Texas Open. Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images Despite his inability to threaten to win in 2024 and so far in 2025, Fowler has received a sponsor's exemption to play this week at The Philadelphia Cricket Club (Wissahickon Course) in Flourtown, Pa. Jordan Spieth and Gary Woodland have also been granted exemptions. While he has not cracked the top 10 so far in 2025, Fowler does have two top-25 finishes to his name this season. He has also made the cut in eight of the nine events he has played this year. With no cuts at signature events, Fowler can once again look forward to playing the weekend, though it is debatable how worthy he is of doing so in a tournament largely reserved for the PGA Tour's best.
