Salinas greeting card company to bring pitch to ‘Shark Tank'
Salinas business owner Jesus Ruvalcaba has always been a fan of "Shark Tank," the ABC hit primetime show that gives entrepreneurs the chance to make a winning pitch to a panel of famous investors. "I can just remember watching it a long time ago and thinking it would be great if I could think of something to go on the show," Ruvalcaba said. On Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m. Ruvalcaba will make his "Shark Tank" debut, where he will be pitching Paper Tacos, the greeting card company he founded in 2017, which incorporates traditional Mexican sayings and cultural references with his often pun-laden artwork. While Ruvalcaba is sworn to secrecy until after the episode airs, a clip shows the Castroville-native giving a lively pitch in front of the sharks. "Sharks, have you ever been woken up on your birthday by your friends, family, even a mariachi as they sing to you 'Las Mañanitas' instead of the traditional Happy Birthday song — and have you ever had your face smashed into your birthday cake as people yell, 'Mordida, Mordida' or 'Bite it Bite it?'" "These are some of the cultural traditions I grew up with that made my Mexican celebrations so unique but when it comes to the greeting card industry, there's a noticeable gap," Ruvalcaba said. Ruvalcaba said the whole experience was surreal. "It was excitement at first, then the realization that this is going to happen — I'd never been more nervous in my life," he said. The pitch was also different, Ruvalcaba said, whose Paper Tacos greeting cards can be found at Vallarta Supermarkets throughout California. "They don't have any idea who I am, how my business is doing, and they don't understand my audience, so it was more educational," he said. Plus, they wanted to know about him. After making his case in front of the sharks, who seemed intrigued in the clip, Ruvalcaba realized that was probably the toughest pitch he would ever give. "Nothing is going to be as tough as this was, and so, like, relax ― I just felt a lot more confident," he said. Now the greeting card entrepreneur is looking to further expand his business and is holding talks with supermarket chains in southern California and Texas. Whether that is on his own or with a little help from a famous shark, you will have to find that out on Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m. on ABC or the next day on HULU.
