Second driver involved in deadly Chicopee crash due in court

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Another driver charged in connection to a deadly hit and run crash in Chicopee is expected to be in court on Wednesday. Mega Millions raises ticket price, improves odds The first driver charged in connection with the deadly crash appeared in court on Tuesday, and now on Wednesday, the second driver is set to appear. On Tuesday, the judge entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Lavonta Williams Jr., one of the suspects involved in that deadly crash back in February. That crash resulted in the death of 34-year-old Vanessa Perez. Police say she was struck and killed by two separate vehicles as she was walking on Abbey Memorial Drive. That night, a call was placed to 911 by an individual that identified their self as 'Lavonta' Prosecution says the caller hung up the call when they told the dispatcher police arrived, but didn't stay to speak with police. Williams is charges with leaving the scene of personal injury and death, however his lawyer said there are many issues with the case and said in an interview after the arraignment that his client is cooperating with law enforcement and tried to do what was right that night by stopping and flagging down people to help. The second suspect, Jerimeldo Lopez, is set to be arraigned on Wednesday on two felony charges, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. The woman, 34-year-old Vanessa Perez of Springfield, died due to her injuries. Police say two separate cars were involved in the crash that killed her, and both drivers will be charged. On Tuesday, 29-year-old Lavonta Williams Jr. will be in court for an arraignment on multiple charges. The other driver, 23-year-old Jerimeldo Lopez of South Hadley, is expected to be in court on Wednesday. Williams Jr. is being charged with one count of leaving the scene of personal injury and death. Lopez is being charged with one count of negligent operation of a motor vehicle and one count of leaving the scene of personal injury and death. CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Hampden County District Attorney's Office has identified the two drivers who are being charged in connection with a deadly pedestrian crash in Chicopee. On Sunday, February 9th officers were called at around 7:19 p.m. to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the area of the 1200 block of Abbey Memorial Drive. When officers arrived, they found an adult woman suffering from injuries. The woman, 34-year-old Vanessa Perez of Springfield, died due to her injuries. Chicopee man arrested in Connecticut for OUI, driving on wrong side of road Nearly a month into the investigation by the Hampden District Attorney's Office Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Chicopee Police Department, two vehicles that were allegedly involved in the crash were located. The drivers have been identified as 29-year-old Lavonta Williams Jr. of Chicopee and 23-year-old Jerimeldo Lopez of South Hadley. They are scheduled to be arraigned on April 8th and April 9th. Williams Jr. is being charged with one count of leaving the scene of personal injury and death. Lopez is being charged with one count of negligent operation of a motor vehicle and one count of leaving the scene of personal injury and death. 'My condolences go out to the Perez family over this tragedy. In a news release sent to 22News from Hampden County District Attorney spokesperson Payton North, on Sunday, February 9th at around 7:45 p.m., Chicopee officers were called to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the area of the 1200 block of Abbey Memorial Drive. Crews working to put out fire on Monrovia Street in Springfield When officers arrived, they found an adult woman suffering from injuries. The woman, identified as 34-year-old Vanessa Perez of Springfield, died from her injuries in the ambulance. The roadway was closed for more than three hours during the investigation. The Hampden District Attorney's Office Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Chicopee Police Department continues to investigate.
