After ceasefire, schools, colleges and universities in Punjab to reopen tomorrow
Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains Sunday announced that all educational institutions, including schools, colleges and universities, in the state will reopen and resume normal functioning from Monday, May 12. This was after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire Saturday evening.
Bains in a post on X said, 'All educational institutions — schools, colleges, and universities — across Punjab shall reopen from tomorrow. Regular classes and examinations will proceed as per academic schedule. We are immensely proud of our brave armed forces. Jai Hind Ki Sena. Vasda Rahe Punjab.'
On May 8, all educational institutions in the state were closed for three days, given the India-Pakistan military conflict following Operation Sindoor launched by the Indian armed forces targeting terror infrastructure across the border after May 6 midnight. In retaliation for Operation Sindoor, Pakistan resorted to shelling and drone attacks across India's northwest border states, including Punjab, for three days before the ceasefire brought relative calm to the region.
On May 8, while announcing the closure of educational institutions, Bains said on X, 'In view of the devolving situation, it is hereby ordered that all Schools, Colleges, and Universities — Government, Private, and Aided — across entire Punjab shall remain completely closed for the next three days.'
In a parallel move, the Chandigarh administration had also announced that all schools in the Union Territory would remain closed for two days, following an alert issued by the public relations department.
The Kapurthala district administration had said all schools, coaching centres, IELTS preparation institutes, and industrial training institutes (ITIs) would remain closed on May 9 and 10. However, institutions conducting examinations would continue to function, it had said.
Panjab University, Chandigarh, also issued a notice Thursday announcing the postponement of all examinations scheduled for May 9, 10 and 12. In an official statement, the controller of examinations said that the new dates would be announced later.
