2 arrested in latest Parma flamingo theft
PARMA, Ohio (WJW) — Two people have been arrested after an iconic flamingo statue was stolen, again, in Parma. Group trapped by river current at Liberty Hollow Park rescued: officials Colin Donald Deka, 20, and Jack Christopher Klamert, 21, both of Valley View, were arrested after police used surveillance video to track down the vehicle and individuals seen stealing the large, pink flamingo from the corner of Snow Road and Broadview Road. Parma police believe the statue was taken last Friday. According to a Tuesday news release from Parma Police, a white Ford Edge was seen on video passing through the intersection around 2:40 a.m. and then parking in the nearby Arby's parking lot. Two men were then seen loading the flamingo into the vehicle and driving away. NWS to investigate Lake Buckhorn storms; tornado confirmed in Stark County Through several traffic cameras, police were able to obtain the vehicle's license plate number. The registered owner was then contacted by police. The owner told detectives that their 20-year-old son also lives with them and 'had access to the car.' Detectives then spoke with the 20-year-old who was cooperative, police said, and the flamingo was recovered. The fiberglass flamingo sculpture, donated to the city by Dennis Vasko and installed in April, had become a beloved symbol in the community. Just one day earlier, Vasko told FOX 8 that the flamingo was never just a decoration, it was a heartfelt gesture for his 4-year-old granddaughter, Ava, who has non-verbal autism. 'When I first heard it, I was ecstatic,' Vasko said after learning of the arrests. 'I'm just glad to hear it. That we could get a little closure to this now.' 'You have to take ownership and responsibility for your actions,' Vasko added. 'We all have to do that in life.' He also thanked the Parma Police Department for treating the theft as a priority. 'I know how the police are here. They are top notch. A1. I wouldn't expect anything less,' he said. 'Just remember… the Parma Police Department will catch you if you try to steal it again.' In May of 2024, Parma's other flamingo statue was stolen from its base and vandalized. Two identified after shooting at Summit Co. home In that case, three men were caught on surveillance video trying to stuff the original flamingo into a trunk before ditching it. Those men were sentenced to 10 days in jail for attempted vandalism, as well as each ordered to pay a $500 fine and complete 500 community service hours. Deka and Klamert were both arrested and charged with theft. They will be arraigned June 24 at 10:00 a.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘You took this from a 4-year-old': Parma grandfather's plea after flamingo stolen
PARMA, Ohio (WJW) – An iconic piece of public art in Parma has once again disappeared and for all the wrong reasons. For the second time in just about a year, someone has stolen the pink flamingo statue that stood at the corner of Snow Road and Broadview Road. The fiberglass sculpture, donated to the city, had become a beloved symbol in the community. Dennis Vasko, the man who paid $2,000 to have it made and installed, said this was never meant to be a joke and he wants whoever took it to understand why. 'It's just been an icon for as long as I can remember,' Vasko said. Owner of raccoon found with meth pipes vows she won't surrender him Parma police believe the statue was taken last Friday. Vasko said the loss is personal. He stood just behind the spot where the flamingo once stood and explained his reason for donating it in the first place — a tribute to his granddaughter, Ava. 'We did it for my granddaughter, Ava. It was supposed to be Ava's flamingo,' he said. 'She has non-verbal autism. It's for her and everybody else like her.' While Vasko isn't concerned about the money it cost or the motive behind the theft, he said what matters most now is someone stepping up to do the right thing. 'You took this from a 4-year-old girl with non-verbal autism,' he said. 'The least you could do is just bring it back. Turn yourself in and bring it back.' At least 4 Akron homes struck by weekend gunfire Just last year, a similar statue was stolen from the same location around Memorial Day. That case ended with police identifying the culprits thanks to surveillance footage. Now, Vasko and police are hoping this time around it doesn't have to go that far. His message to whoever is behind this? 'Just be better,' Vasko said. 'Just be better.' Parma police are asking anyone with information to call them immediately. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Alexa Vasko's Pair Of Goals Lift Ottawa Over Minnesota
It was Alexa Vasko's first pair of goals in an Ottawa Charge sweater that lifted her team over the Minnesota Frost just days after a 5-0 romp in their Takeover Tour game in Carolina. Sitting in fifth place in the PWHL standings, the win brings Ottawa within five points of the final playoff position with just eight games remaining in the regular season. Captain Brianne Jenner said her team is getting closer to the hockey required to see the postseason for the first time in franchise history. 'At this point in the season, our goal is just to get a playoff spot, but we've also gotta figure out how to start playing our playoff hockey style and I thought tonight we had glimpses of that,' Jenner said. The Charge led the contest right off the hop after captain Brianne Jenner tucked a rebound past Frost goaltender Maddie Rooney. Ottawa also held the visitors to just two shots in the opening frame, relieving the usually busy Emerance Maschmeyer after a rough start in Carolina. 'We wanted to just prove to ourselves that we could get back to our game,' Jenner said. 'We were just chomping at the bit to get out there tonight.' Scoring has been a struggle for the Charge since their very first PWHL game, but the depth delivered with Vasko netting her first two goals of the season. The first cushioned Ottawa's lead midway through the second period after Natalie Snodgrass pounced on a giveaway to set up Vasko for a one-timer. 🚨 Alexa Vasko (1)🍎🍏 Natalie Snodgrass — Ottawa Charge (@PWHL_Ottawa) March 12, 2025 '[Snodgrass] did a great work on that forecheck there and made a nice pass and all I had to do was put it in the net, so props to her on that one,' Vasko said. Armed with a 2-0 lead headed into the final frame, the Charge faltered midway through the period to squander their lead entirely. First came Taylor Heise's snipe from the point. Things we love to see: a Heise snipe 🎯 — Minnesota Frost (@PWHL_Minnesota) March 12, 2025 In another stroke of bad luck for Ottawa, just moments after Maschmeyer made her 1000th career save — the first PWHL goaltender to reach the mark in regular season play — she sustained an injury, needing to be helped off the ice by two trainers. 'It's certainly a moment that you're just trying to rally the girls and just say, 'hey, let's go get this one from Masch,' and that's exactly what the team did,' said head coach Carla MacLeod. Gwyneth Philips came into the net in relief, but was soon embroiled in a controversial goal on Claire Thompson's one-timer just minutes later. Minnesota's Michela Cava stayed close to Philips in her crease as she tried to track the play across the ice, but Philips was unable to stop Thompson's blast. A look at the one timer by Claire Thompson 😮💨 — Minnesota Frost (@PWHL_Minnesota) March 12, 2025 After a lengthy video review following Ottawa's challenge of the goal, the play was determined a good goal, much to the dismay of the Charge faithful. It was back to square one, and an ensuing penalty call against Ottawa even threatened to put them behind with just minutes remaining in regulation. But Vasko had other plans, taking a diving sweep pass from Ronja Savolainen and beating Rooney all alone. 🚨 Alexa Vasko (2)🍎 Ronja Savolainen🍏 Zoe Boyd — Ottawa Charge (@PWHL_Ottawa) March 12, 2025 '[Savolainen] made a heck of a play diving for the puck just to pop it loose and I just had to put it in, so a huge team effort there,' Vasko said. The 26-year-old depth player wasn't willing to divulge any secrets as to how she knew where to shoot on the veteran goalie. 'I can't give any secrets there, but our staff does a great job giving the resources that we need and prepares us for the game.' Jenner praised her team's ability to bounce back from a situation it hasn't been able to claw out of many times in the past. 'There was sort of a balance of calm, but also desperation and urgency to make plays and especially in the end to kind of seal that win,' she said.
