'Out of touch': Nicole Kidman slammed after recommending $680 massage treatments when visiting Sydney

The Sydney-native, 57, recently chatted to The New York Times to reveal the places she finds 'comfort and ease' when she returns to the harbour city. Kidman's picks range from free spots like the Royal Botanical Garden to an ultra-exclusive day spa. 'Every time I return to Sydney, there's a feeling of comfort and ease,' she told the newspaper. 'This city is where I grew up, where my sister and her family live, where my children love to spend their holidays.' Her favourite places to visit include the Royal Botanic Garden, The Art Gallery of NSW, day spa Venustus and the Harbour pools. Iconic pie shop Harry's Café de Wheels in Woolloomooloo also made Kidman's hit list. While four of the five are accessible to any visitor or resident, the Six Hand Body Massage at luxurious day spa Venustus starts from a whopping $1059. 'They just know how to take care of people, and their treatments are amazing, especially after a long flight,' the movie star said. 'A massage at Venustus will have you ready to go to take on the city.' 'Thanks Nicole for recommending a spa where, for a mere (starting at) $687 (AUD) I can get a massage,' one person said. 'Why the high end spa? It's incongruous with the others that are all free or very low cost,' another fan pointed out. 'Seems like hidden advertising or something and detracts from the whole article.' Despite primarily residing in the United States since 1989, Kidman and her husband Keith Urban have maintained strong links to their homeland. In Sydney, the couple own six combined apartments overlooking Sydney Harbour in Milson's Point. The Kidman-Urban clan also own a breathtaking 45-acre rural property called Bunya Hill in the Southern Highlands, complete with cattle and alpacas. The family typically spend the Christmas holidays in Australia and host a private New Year's Eve party at their sprawling Sydney apartment.

The 57-year-old Oscar winner shared with The New York Times her five favourite places in Sydney that comfort her. In fairness to Kidman, she offered many accessible options, including the Art Gallery of NSW, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the iconic pie shop Harry's Café, and the Harbour pools. The acclaimed actor also listed the day spa Venustus located in Sydney's affluent suburb of Paddington. It is described as a 'global destination' and offers body massages starting from $300 and is pretty bloody fancy. The salon's six-hand body massage costs $1000 but is described as 'cutting-edge,' and three specialised therapists will work on you at once. Kidman, who owns a multimillion-dollar apartment in Milsons Point, is married to country star Keith Urban and, according to Forbes, made $42 million in 2024, is unsurprisingly able to afford the finer things in life. Kidman praised the salon, saying that the establishment knows how to 'take care of people,' and recommended it. 'Their treatments are amazing, especially after a long flight. A massage at Venustus will have you ready to go to take on the city,' she said. Even though four out of five of her options were affordable, the expensive one certainly got people talking. Australians quickly defended the recommendation, arguing celebrities don't live like average people. 'Well of course she's out of touch! She's a rich celebrity that probably doesn't pay for half the services and goods she gets anyway,' one said. 'All famous people are out of touch. They don't live in the real world,' someone else said. 'You would have to be pretty naive to suggest this woman is in any way relatable to an average person,' one noted. 'Get over yourselves all those who are whinging about this. Why wouldn't you go to Venustus for the 6 hand massage?' One asked. 'Just entitled people complaining because they're too poor to follow a rich movie star's recommendation,' one raged. 'Who cares, she can afford, they didn't ask her favourite poor places to go to,' someone else argued. 'No surprise that outrageously overpaid people would choose outrageously overpriced goods or services. Everyone should live within their means,' another said. Kidman has always been a proud Aussie. In 2021, in an interview with Ray Martin, she revealed why she loved it so much. 'It's the trees, it's the humour. I mean there's so much about Australia that's so unique,' she said. 'It's also this distance from the rest of the world which, when you're a teenager you go, 'I want to see Europe, I want to see America, I want to get out there, I want to see it. 'Well now I'm saying, 'I've seen it, I want to go home'. There's just everything here that you need.'

The celeb couple first bought a 420sqm pad on the 21st floor in 2009 for close to $6 million according to newspaper reports. Three years later, they bought the slightly smaller 380sqm apartment next door with better views of the harbour for a reported $7 million. In 2011, they also splashed out $2.68 million on a 19th floor apartment, which the Oscar-winner initially used as her home office. The Hollywood stars also own an idyllic farmhouse called Bunya Hill in the Southern Highlands village of Sutton Forrest which they bought in 2008 for $6.5million. Set on a sprawling 45-hectares featuring herds of cattle and alpaca, the Georgian mansion boasts a traditional wide sandstone verandah. Since buying the property, Keith and Nicole installed an 18m swimming pool, new gym, full-sized tennis court and 250m grass mounds around the perimeter to block out prying eyes.
