Article content The Elks didn't offer much in the way of starters — 40 rookies peppered the visiting team's roster — but it still makes for a feel-good start for a franchise in need of it this season. Article content The prized QB — nicknamed 'Big-Play V.A.' — was gunning right from the start and moving the ball with authority, instantly wiping away the stumbles seen at the position of previous years which have maligned the offence. Article content Article content Points were scored on all three drives Adams engineered — a couple of touchdowns on QB sneaks by fellow pivot Logan Bonner and a 52-yard field-goal bombed by veteran kicker René Paredes. Article content After that, it was P.J. Walker's chance to show his wares at quarterback for the Stampeders. And he marched the club downfield on a handful of drives, hooking up with receiver Daylen Baldwin on a 13-yard TD on a third-and-long gamble in the fourth quarter. Article content The Calgary Stampeders stayed off the field Wednesday, given the busy schedule ahead. Article content Camp was suspended a day with the upcoming Monday marking their first Canadian Football League pre-season tilt — that being against the host BC Lions at Vancouver Island's Starlight Stadium in Langford, B.C. (2 p.m., CHQR 107.3 FM/770 AM). Article content But that didn't keep the club from making moves off the field. Article content Article content Article content The Monday matinee also marks a return by new Stamps QB Vernon Adams Jr. to BC, where he played the last two seasons with the Lions. Article content The 10th-year quarterback threw for 2,929 yards and 16 touchdowns with the Lions in 2024. That followed a super season a year earlier with the West Coast squad — whopping totals of 4,769 yards and 31 totals, both career-highs for Adams. Article content Article content Now, he's trying to re-create similar success with the Stampeders, beginning with Monday's pre-season game if he, indeed, gets the call to arms in that game. Article content The Stamps have four QBs on their roster and want to get a look at all of them in the pre-season ahead of the regular-season start on Saturday, June 7, against the incoming Hamilton Tiger-Cats at McMahon Stadium (5 p.m., TSN,CHQR 107.3 FM/770 AM).
