Vestal senior appointed to Naval Academy

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton teenager is Broome County's only appointee to the Naval Academy for the next school year. Reagan Young attends Vestal High School where she has had an exceptional career both academically and athletically. Young is receiving an International Baccalaureate diploma and is the President of the Senior Class. She also plays lacrosse, basketball, flag football, and is on the swimming and track teams. Young says she is honored to be chosen for such a prestigious and competitive appointment. The Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland has only an 8 to 10 percent acceptance rate. As part of the process, she had to be nominated by former Congressman Marc Molinaro. Young says she was originally inspired to join the military by watching the movie G.I. Jane as a little girl. 'Around 8th grade, I kept seeing a bunch of these videos on my social media. So, I really looked into it and was, 'Wow, these people who I'm seeing online are very skilled, very determined.' I feel like I'd be a great fit for that, so I looked into it. I looked into the rigor of the academy and the prestige of it, and I knew that's where I wanted to go, that's where I wanted to be,' said Young. Young's journey will begin with Pleb Summer, a sort of basic training for the freshman class. After four years of academic study and training, she will graduate as a commissioned officer. Young says she's interested in possibly becoming a Navy pilot or a surface warfare officer stationed on an aircraft carrier. Vestal HS places 2nd in regional mock trial competition

VESTAL, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – After conquering the Broome County division, one local high school's debate team faced off in the regional round over the weekend. Vestal High School's mock trial team defeated Binghamton High School to advance to the regional round. In mock trial competitions, two teams are given a fictional lawsuit, and a coin flip designates which team is the plaintiff and which is the defense. They use fictional evidence and witness testimony to support their arguments and create questions for direct and cross examination. The mock trial advisor, Zachary Gretsky says teams earn points based on how well they ask questions and respond to objections. 'We have students that have interest in law and students that have no interest in law. Really, what they come here to do is find a way to work as a team, to approach problems that have complex answers and solutions, and apply their different ideas and solutions to that,' says Gretsky. Over the weekend, Vestal won in the semi-finals against Tompkins County, and placed second in the region overall, after losing in the finals to a school from Onondaga County. Vestal graduate suing Trump over alleged illegal firing from FTC

(WIVT/WBGH) – A Vestal graduate is at the center of a dispute with President Trump over the executive's ability to fire directors of an independent agency. Alvaro Bedoya was born in Lima, Peru, but was raised in Vestal, graduating from Vestal High School in the late '90s. He was a Commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission from 2022 until Trump fired him and another Democratic Commissioner on March 18 before his term had expired. Bedoya has publicly challenged his dismissal and filed a lawsuit, arguing that Trump's actions were illegal and corrupt. Bedoya claims that Trump retaliated against him for suggesting that the FTC investigate the trade practices of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos who attended Trump inauguration in support of him. He posted on X 'Now, the president wants the FTC to be a lapdog for his golfing buddies.' Bedoya is largely known for his focus on digital privacy issues.
