Protection for a pup: Denver K-9 to receive donated body armor
DENVER (KDVR) — A K-9 who works with the Denver Sheriff's Department will soon get a newly donated body armor suit.
According to a press release from the sheriff's department, 'Boomer' will receive the donation from Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. The non-profit organization has a mission to provide body armor to K-9s working for law enforcement and other related agencies in the United States. According to the release, there are an estimated 30,000 K-9s in law enforcement in the U.S.

Boomer's vest is expected to be delivered in about 10 weeks and will have 'In memory of Jeanne K. Strzala' embroidered on the side. The vest is protective against bullets and stabbing.
The organization has supplied 5,882 vests to K-9s in all 50 states. The total value of the vests donated by private and corporate donors is valued at $6.9 million, according to the press release.

K-9s become eligible for the program once they are 20 months old and must be certified by law enforcement or related agencies. K-9s with expired vests are also eligible for new donations.
Donations of $1,050 sponsor one vest, which has a total value of $1,800. The vests weigh four to five pounds on average and come with a five-year warranty.
