Scienza's last-gasp goal saves Heidenheim, ends Elversberg's Bundesliga dream

ELVERSBERG, Germany - Bundesliga side Heidenheim retained their spot in the top flight as Leo Scienza struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 2-1 win at Elversberg in the second leg of the relegation playoff on Monday. Having battled back to draw 2-2 at home in the first leg, Heidenheim, who finished in 16th place in the Bundesliga, edged a spirited Elversberg, who have never played in the top flight, 4-3 on aggregate. Mathias Honsak fired Heidenheim ahead after nine minutes, latching onto a slick through ball from Scienza, who had surged forward after winning possession in midfield. Elversberg equalised in the 31st minute after a great run by Tom Zimmerschied who set up captain Robin Fellhauer in front of goal to coolly finish past the goalkeeper. The hosts thought they had gone in front two minutes after the break when Fisnik Asllani turned home from close range, but the goal was chalked off following a VAR review for offside. Despite dominating possession, Elversberg failed to find a breakthrough, and their dream of reaching the Bundesliga slipped away when Scienza capped a great team move five minutes into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations among the visiting fans. Heidenheim will play their second Bundesliga season, while VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel were relegated from the top flight. Cologne and Hamburg SV won automatic promotion to the top division. Bochum part company with 'speed demon' Gerrit Holtmann

Following their officially relegation from the Bundesliga, VfL Bochum quickly confirmed the departure of ten players on Monday. A major restructuring was obviously coming. In emotional scenes at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion on Saturday afternoon, long-time squad captain Anthony Losilla and veteran Cristian Gamboa bade farewell to the Revierklub. Four loan players – Tom Krauß, Georgios Masouras, Jakov Medic, Far and top scorer Myron Boadu – are headed back to their parent clubs. Keeper Paul Grave and high value defender Bernardo depart on expiring contracts. Ukrainian centre-back Ivan Ordets is permitted to leave due to a release clause in his current deal. Advertisement On Tuesday, the club confirmed that popular German winger Gerrit Holtmann would also leave following four seasons spent representing the 1848ers. The Bremen native – who represents the Philippines internationally – could conceivably have a future in the German top flight due to his extensive experience with Bochum, Mainz, and Darmstadt. Holtmann has made 135 Bundesliga appearances for his three clubs. The speedster earned the nickname 'the Filipino Typhoon' due to his incredible pace. This year, Holtmann was clocked at 22.83 mph (36.74 km/h) during a matchday nine loss against Eintracht Frankfurt. At the time, that made him the fastest recorded player in Bundesliga history. FC Heidenheim's Sirlord Conteh, who had been top on the list after breaking the record on early in the season, then took top spot back with a recorded speed of 22.88 mph (36.82 km/h) on matchday 13. 'We would have liked to continue with Gerrit. He identified with VfL and the people here,' Bochum sporting director Dirk Dufner noted in a club statement. 'We had positive talks, at the end of which he informed us that he had decided to take on a new challenge.' Advertisement GGFN | Peter Weis 'I would like to thank the VfL management and the loyal fans for a wonderful time at an extraordinary club,' the player himself added in a statement published on the club website.'I wish Bochum all the best and hope that they'll soon be back where they belong in the top division.'

Bochum, Kiel relegated, Heidenheim get lifeline with win at Union

BERLIN : VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel were relegated from the Bundesliga on Saturday after defeats by Mainz 05 and Freiburg respectively on the penultimate matchday of the season. Bochum, who had been promoted back in 2021, suffered a 4-1 home loss to European hopefuls Mainz and are bottom on 22 points, three behind Holstein Kiel in 17th, with one match left. The hosts went into the game needing a win to have any chances of staying up but Mainz went in front in first-half stoppage time thanks to Nadiem Amiri's superb free kick. Phillipp Mwene struck eight minutes after the restart and Jonathan Burkardt made it 3-0 to seal Bochum's fate and lift Mainz into sixth place that leads to the Conference League competition. Bochum cut the deficit through Gerrit Holtmann's low drive before Pual Nebel scored for Mainz in stoppage time. Kiel, who won promotion last season, took a 24th-minute lead through Lasse Rosenboom but Freiburg, battling for a top-four finish and Champions League football next season, levelled in stoppage time through Johan Manzambi before Lukas Hoeler headed in at the far post to make it 2-1. Freiburg are fourth on 55 points, with Borussia Dortmund, in fifth on 51, taking on Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. Heidenheim, winners 3-0 at Union Berlin, are in the relegation playoff spot in 16th, two points behind St Pauli who travel to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.
