TelevisaUnivision Bets on Microdramas and Music in Upfront Push
TelevisaUnivision plans to lean into new formats and areas of cultural conversation, as the Spanish-language media giant seeks to stand out in a crowded upfront marketplace. That will include the addition of 24/7 reality formats, where viewers can watch the goings-on at any time in addition to regular episodes, a slew of music programming (and an entirely new live music festival), and a substantial investment in 'microdramas,' which will seek to bring the telenovela format to mobile devices. More from The Hollywood Reporter Kim Kardashian Plays Hardball Divorce Lawyer in Ryan Murphy's 'All's Fair' Legal Drama Trailer FX Sets Premiere Dates for 'The Bear' Season 4, 'Alien: Earth' and Sterlin Harjo's 'The Lowdown' Inside the Amazon Upfront: There's No Escaping Walton Goggins 'Where all other businesses are trying to be everything to everyone, we are laser focused, and always have been,' days Donna Speciale, TelevisaUnivision's head of ad sales, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. 'I think we have a uniqueness to us, you know, we are a cultural force. We're built on trust over 70 years. We have this authenticity and this deep connection with our audience, we are the heart of the Hispanic connection, and that unique proposition really makes us stand out and makes us be very different than everything else that's out there.' The company has the Univision network, of course, but it has also built up the ViX streaming platform, which is increasingly where it is investing in a push to retain relevance with younger consumers. The microdrama strategy is a key part of that. As TikTok-style vertical video has exploded in popularity, some Asia-based apps and studios have created ultra short-form dramas built with extraordinarily low budgets. While they aren't a threat to ultra-premium TV dramas, they are sucking up time on mobile devices, and TelevisaUnivision thinks that it can leverage its expertise in the telenovela space to secure a piece of that pie. The company plans to debut about 40 of the microdramas, which will be presented in ViX in one minute or so episodes, with plans to expand into documentaries, comedies and other genres later. 'This format has been exploding in the Asian markets, and it really taps into the appetite of that young, digital centric user based across a massive mobile footprint. We're basically capturing that craze, and we're building on our expertise with episodic scripted dramas,' Speciale says. 'We're going to be putting a lot of different types of innovation, messaging and stuff for clients and brands to sponsor and lean into.' Speciale adds that the company expects to experiment more with brand integrations in the microdrama space, given the short episodes and a desire to minimize viewing interruptions. 'Clients actually want to kind of test with us, because we all don't have the answers quite yet, but we all know, given what we're seeing and given the surge of TikTok and how this audience now lives on their phones and vertical content now is what they're used to,' she says. 'There's a huge opportunity here, and we really believe that we're going to seize the moment.' In the music space, TelevisaUnivision has a slew of programming on tap, and is planning to launch its own branded music festival called YA Fest, which will also run across the company's platforms. The company plans to host the festival across multiple cities with different genres of music. 'We're going to be simulcasting them at the same time between linear and digital, having a lot of influencers and hosts going across back and forth,' Speciale says. 'It's going to be a huge social play. Clients are definitely now leaning into wanting to do social first, digital first events. And I think this is going to be one of them that I think could be a huge success.' The company is also launching ViX Música, which it frames as a music destination within the larger ViX experience In the entertainment space, new series include reality concepts like the 24/7 reality concept La Mansión 24/7 and the survival reality show El Conquistador, and scripted fare like Doménica Montero and Los Hilos del Pasado. But the upfront comes at an uncertain moment for the ads business. Media buyers are seeking flexibile terms given tariffs and economic uncertainty, while media companies are leaning into sports and live events to try and secure as many commitments as possible. TelevisaUnivision is no exception, with a new deal with Concacaf adding its women's events to the lineup. Speciale says that her company is prepared for what's coming. 'Uncertainty is not new to the marketplace, I mean, we've have had recessions before, we all went through COVID. That was a first for us,' she says. 'What I can say and what has happened in all times of uncertainty is that marketers lean in and focus on areas and investments that drive the biggest impact, and don't scale back on the areas that drive growth, and I feel really good about that, because the Hispanic audience now being 20 percent of the population, clients are realizing that this is a huge business imperative, and it shows day in and day out the ROI when they lean in.' 'What they're talking about is flexibility. They want flexibility only because of the unknown and the upfront gives them the flexibility. The terms and conditions have always been there,' she adds. 'So to me, we're in a great place, because we are such a huge growth engine for them and such a huge growth driver that I'm really confident going into this, that we're not going to not going to be affected.' Rebekah Vardy reveals she is flogging her old bikinis on Vinted after being ordered to pay £1.4M to Coleen Rooney in Wagatha Christie trial
Rebekah Vardy has revealed she is flogging her old designer bikinis after being ordered to pay Coleen Rooney £1.4M in legal fees. Last week, the WAG, 43, agreed to pay £1,190,000 of Coleen's legal bill, plus a further £212,266 in assessment costs, after sensationally losing their high-profile libel case. This takes the total Rebekah must pay to at least £1,402,266.20. MailOnline understands she has already paid some of the bill, including £800,000 four years ago and £100,000 last year. It has now emerged that the TV personality is selling her clothes on resale site Vinted as she advertised the items on her Instagram Story on Tuesday. Rebekah was advertising a range of her colourful swimwear, from luxury brands including Luli Fama, ViX and Good American. One bikini from Luli Fama, where swimwear retails from around £170, was being listed on her page for a fraction of the price at £50. It has now emerged that the TV personality is selling her clothes on resale site Vinted as she advertised the items on her Instagram Story on Tuesday Meanwhile, the ViX bikinis, which would cost around £200 to buy new were being listed for similar price tags. Rebekah had also listed items of clothing from her wardrobe, as well as children's clothing she no longer wanted. It comes after it was revealed she had left the UK after being ordered to pay Coleen a huge sum in their Wagatha Christie settlement following the years-long legal battle. She shared a snap of herself jetting out of the country on a budget flight after being ordered to pay £1.4million to Coleen. While Coleen shared her 'relief' that the ordeal had finally come to an end, Rebekah was clearly in no mood to hang around as she took the early morning flight. Breaking her silence in a statement on Wednesday, Coleen, 39, insisted 'time and money should have been put to better use' in the scathing message to Rebekah. She wrote: 'The ruling yesterday in my favour finally brings this claim to an end, it's a relief and brings closure for my family and I. 'Throughout this long process, I am grateful that the judgements have consistently gone my way. While Coleen shared her 'relief' that the ordeal had finally come to an end, Rebekah was clearly in no mood to hang around as she took the early morning flight 'However, as I have always maintained this claim did not need to be made or run for as long as it did. 'The time and money should have been put to better use. 'I want to thank my legal representatives, management, friends and family for their guidance and constant support. 'Thanks also to the public and many well wishers who have been in touch with such kind messages. 'This episode is not something I ever wanted in my life however I am thankful for the way my family and team have dealt with it. 'We look forward to moving on with our lives.' Coleen must also pay Rebekah a total of £135,097.50 in costs under the terms of court orders from 2024, which will be set off against what Rebekah must pay. A source close to Rebekah told MailOnline on Tuesday: 'It's a huge relief for Rebekah that this long legal battle is now coming to an end. She wrote: 'The ruling yesterday in my favour finally brings this claim to an end, it's a relief and brings closure for my family and I' 'She's looking forward to putting the whole ordeal well and truly behind her. 'Now she's just focusing on the future. And there are some big plans coming up for her now that she just wants to get cracking with.' Coleen ran up a legal bill of more than £1.8 million while successfully defending herself against Rebekah's High Court claim in 2022. After losing their High Court showdown, Rebekah was ordered to pay 90 percent of Coleen's legal costs. In written submissions to a specialist costs court hearing on Tuesday, Rebekah's barrister, Juliet Wells, said Coleen's total legal bill of £1,833,906.89 'has now been settled at £1,190,000, being [approximately] £1,125,000 plus interest of [approximately] £65,000'. The court heard that while Coleen was also asking for a further £315,000 in 'assessment costs', Costs Judge Mark Whalan ordered Rebekah to pay £212,266.20 of Coleen's assessment costs, inclusive of VAT but before interest, on top of the £1.19 million settlement. While Mrs Wells previously called for the 'grossly disproportionate' assessment costs to be capped at 'no more than £100,000', Judge Whalan said the amount awarded was 'reasonable and proportionate'. He added that while there had been 'extraordinary expenditure of costs' on both sides, he was 'generally happy' the outcome was a 'commercially satisfactory conclusion' for the pair. The post that started it all: Coleen accused Rebekah's social media account of leaking stories 'I do mean it when I say that I hope that this is the end of a long and unhappy road,' he added. Rebekah's lawyer previously argued Coleen's team had used a 'kitchen sink' approach when calculating the total and included 'over £120,000 of costs to which Coleen has no entitlement'. It was also claimed the bill included costs for one of the WAG's team to stay at Nobu - a five star luxury hotel - and 'substantial dinner and drinks charges as well as mini bar charges'. The lawyer said Coleen's £1,833,906.89 legal bill was over three times her 'agreed costs budget of £540,779.07'. But Coleen's lawyer, Robin Dunne, had argued it was 'frankly outrageous' to accuse them of dishonesty. Rebekah unsuccessfully sued the I'm A Celeb star in the High Court in 2022 after she was publicly accused of leaking stories about her to the press. The catalyst for the famous Wagatha Christie case was a dramatic open letter written by Coleen and posted on social media in October 2019 in which she revealed she had turned detective to figure out who had been leaking the stories. Coleen publicly claimed Rebekah's account was the source behind three newspaper stories featuring fake details she had posted on her private Instagram profile - her travelling to Mexico for a 'gender selection' procedure, her planning to return to TV and the basement flooding at her home. Penning that she had a 'suspicion' of who it could be, Coleen told her millions of followers that 'to try and prove this' she 'came up with an idea'. 'I blocked everyone from viewing my Instagram stories except ONE account,' she wrote. For the next five months, she uploaded 'a series of false stories' to see if 'they made their way' into the press. 'And you know what, they did!' she penned 'The story about gender selection in Mexico, the story about returning to TV and then the latest story about the basement flooding in my new house.' She continued to build suspense, writing: 'It's been tough keeping it to myself and not making any comment at all, especially when the stories have been leaked, however I had to. Now I know for certain which account/individual it's come from. 'I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person had viewed them.' And then, she delivered her final iconic line: 'It's.......... Rebekah Vardy's account.' What followed was a tearful appearance from Rebekah on ITV's Loose Women in February 2020 in which claimed the stress over the dispute had caused her to have anxiety attacks so severe she 'ended up in hospital three times'. The emotional display was met by Coleen with a statement to say she did not want to 'engage in further public debate' on the matter. Four months later, in June 2020, Rebekah began legal proceedings against Coleen for libel with her lawyers alleging she had 'suffered extreme distress, hurt, anxiety and embarrassment as a result of the publication of the post and the events which followed'. At the first preliminary hearing in London's High Court in November the same year, Mr Justice Warby ruled that Coleen's famous letter 'clearly identified' Rebekah as being 'guilty of the serious and consistent breach of trust'. He concluded the 'natural and ordinary' meaning of the posts was that Rebekah had 'regularly and frequently abused her status as a trusted follower of Mrs Rooney's personal Instagram account' by secretly informing the press of Coleen's 'private posts and stories'. When the case returned to the courts in February 2022, a series of explosive messages between Rebekah and her agent Caroline Watt were revealed with Coleen's lawyers alleging they were about her. Rebekah denied that one message calling someone a 'nasty b****' was in reference to Coleen. When asked by defence lawyers to present Ms Watt's phone so they could further investigate the WhatsApp messages, they were told it had fallen into the North Sea when Ms Watt was on a boat during a holiday. Coleen was denied permission to bring a High Court claim against Ms Watt for misuse of private information to be heard alongside the libel battle as it was brought too late. Ms Watt was then dubbed not fit to give oral evidence, revoked permission for her witness statement to be used and withdrew her waiver which would have allowed journalists to say whether she was a source of the leaked stories. Coleen's barrister then told the High Court Rebekah 'appears to accept' her agent was the source of the leaked stories and argued her new statement suggested this but Rebekah claimed she 'did not authorise or condone her'. In May 2022, the women finally came face-to-face in court to give evidence as the Wagatha Christie trial began in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Coleen secured her victory the next month when Mrs Justice Steyn delivered her verdict, dismissing the claim made by Rebekah and finding Coleen had proved the meaning of her famous accusatory letter was 'substantially true'. Whilst Coleen said she was 'pleased' the judge had ruled in her favour, Rebekah declared she was 'extremely sad and disappointed' at the decision.

‘El Extraño Retorno De Diana Salazar' Returns For Final Season On ViX
Angelique Boyer, Sebastián Rulli, Arap Bethke and Cassandra Sánchez-Navarro return for the ... More conclusion of a love story that transcends time. El Extraño Retorno de Diana Salazar returns for its dramatic conclusion as ViX premieres the third and final season of its hit original series, starring Angelique Boyer ('El amor invencible,' 'Amar a muerte') and her real-life partner Sebastián Rulli ('El dragón,' 'Lo que la vida me robó') as star-crossed lovers and soulmates who have reincarnated and once again face an uphill battle to be together. Arap Bethke ('La rebelión,' 'Amores permitidos') and Cassandra Sánchez-Navarro ('Consuelo,' 'El juego de las llaves S3') are part of the love triangle that has transcended time. First announced at TelevisaUnivision's upfront for the 2023–2024 television season, this modern remake of Televisa's iconic 1988 telenovela - starring legendary Mexican actress Lucía Méndez and Argentine actor Jorge Martínez in the lead roles - reimagines the story for contemporary audiences. Diana, originally a student in the classic series, is now a doctor navigating her supernatural powers, a cursed love triangle, and a far more sensual storyline - complete with steamy scenes that are a bold departure from the chaste kisses of 35 years ago. The first season introduced Diana (Boyer), a woman marked by an unusual destiny, as she uncovered mysteries that defied logic and revealed secrets from her past lives. She found herself torn between two men - Mario (Rulli) and Joaquin (Bethke). In the second season, Diana began to understand the dangerous potential of her powers while uncovering more about her past and its connection to the present. The love triangle intensified as Joaquin refused to hide his feelings for Diana, and Mario, consumed by jealousy, struggled with Irene's (Sánchez-Navarro) growing presence in his life. Now, in the third season, Diana fully embraces her powers and fights to break the cycle of suffering that binds four souls across lifetimes. After being released from a psychiatric ward, she struggles to control her abilities while facing the consequences of her past actions. Mario - also a doctor and researcher - remains torn between his love for Diana and his disbelief in the supernatural, while Joaquin grows closer to her. Meanwhile, Irene, consumed by her connection to the past, spirals into obsession and kidnaps Diana in her desperate search for answers. El Extraño Retorno de Diana Salazar is executive produced by Patricio Wills and Carlos Bardasano. This new version was developed and written by Esther Feldman ('Isla brava,' 'El dragón,' 'Los ricos también lloran,' 'Los exitosos Pells') and Carlos Algara ('Isla brava,' 'El dragón') and directed by Luis Manzo ('Los ricos también lloran,' 'Si nos dejan,' 'Betty en NY'), Pável Vázquez ('Travesuras de la niña mala,' 'El dragón,' 'Los ricos también lloran'), and Carlos Santos ('Los ricos también lloran,' 'La doña'). All episodes of the final season dropped April 11 and are now available exclusively on ViX's premium plan.

TelevisaUnivision Reports Full-Year Streaming Profit, U.S. Ad Revenue Grows on Sports, Political
Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision reported a 2 percent U.S. revenue gain to $835.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2024 and a 5 percent U.S. subscription and licensing revenue improvement to $346.5 million. The company, led by CEO Daniel Alegre, said that its streaming business with its flagship service ViX posted another profit in the fourth quarter of 2024 after achieving profitability in the third quarter 'after just two full years in the marketplace.' After having ended 2023 with more than 7 million subscribers and $700 million in annual revenue, 'the direct-to-consumer (DTC) business generated $1 billion in revenue and positive adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA) in ViX's second full year of operation,' the company highlighted on Thursday. More from The Hollywood Reporter Max Launches Successfully in Southeast Asia, But Netflix Still Dominates the Region Berlin Hidden Gem: China's Jing Yi Taps Memories of Xinjiang for Enigmatic Feature Debut 'The Botanist' BBC Revenge Thriller Series 'Reunion,' Set in the Deaf Community, Gets First-Look Pictures José Luis Fabila is now leading all content globally for the company as part of an Alegre-overseen reorganization and reduction of its workforce by a mid- to high-single-digit percentage, which was unveiled late last year. TelevisaUnivision disclosed restructuring, severance and related charges of $53.4 million for the fourth quarter, compared with $24.2 million in the year-ago period. For the full year 2024, these charges amounted to $72.9 million, compared with $53.4 million in 2023.
