Ireland under-20s to open World Rugby Championship campaign against Georgia

Ireland will play their opening fixture at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship against Georgia on Sunday, June 29th (5pm Irish time). The game will be the opener of a Pool C double-header at the Stadio San Michele in Calvisano, with New Zealand and Italy playing in the second game (7.30pm). In their second outing, Neil Doak's side will face against the Italians, on Friday, July 4th at the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella in Viadana. Ireland will return to Calvisano for their last pool game on Wednesday, July 9th, where they will face the Baby Blacks (5.30pm Irish time). READ MORE The three pool winners and the best runner-up will contest the main semi-finals. Each team will play five matches in total with the side that finishes 12th relegated to the World Trophy competition. Ireland won their pool in last season's tournament in Cape Town but lost their semi-final to the eventual champions England, and subsequently lost the third-place playoff game against New Zealand. Ireland have twice reached an Under-20 World Cup final – in 2016 when they lost to hosts England and in 2023 when they were beaten by France. The current Irish squad finished bottom of the Six Nations, managing just a single victory over Scotland. Doak will hopefully have a stronger hand up front if Alan Spicer, Alex Usanov, Niall Smyth, Emmet Calvey and Luke Murphy, who missed the championship through injury, are back and available to play. World Rugby also announced the 10 referees and five television match officials (TMOs) that will preside over the tournament, including Ireland's Peter Martin and Leo Colgan. The selected referees are Tomas Bertazza (Argentina), Ben Breakspear (Wales), Griffin Colby (South Africa), Katsuki Furuse (Japan), Peter Martin (Ireland), Marcus Playle (New Zealand), Jérémy Rozier (France), Filippo Russo (Italy), Lex Weiner (USA) and Morgan White (Hong Kong China). The TMOs are Leo Colgan (Ireland), Graham Cooper (Australia), Aled Griffiths (Wales), Quinton Immelman (South Africa) and Dan Jones (RFU) with two of them – Colgan and Immelman – also selected for this year's Women's Rugby World Cup in England. World Rugby Talent ID manager and tournament referee manager, Ireland's Johnny Lacey said: 'The selection of this panel highlights the referees that are coming through our pathway system. We have been working closely with our unions and regions to increase the number of match officials in our pathway into World Rugby competitions. 'We are already starting to see the benefits with our talent identification programme providing four referees for this tournament and we are excited to see what the future holds for the officials involved in our men's and women's pathways.' The World Championship final will take place in the Stadio Mario Battaglini in Rovigo on Saturday, July 19th (7.30pm Irish time).

Kaden Groves beaten by Olav Kooij in hectic Giro d'Italia sprint on stage 12

Dutchman Olav Kooij has come out on top in a sprint finish to win stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia, overtaking compatriot Casper van Uden before the line. Mexico's Isaac del Toro kept a firm grip on the overall lead on a day where the overall favourites only had to stay out of trouble. Kooij was led out by his Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Wout van Aert, but Van Uden, who beat Kooij into second place to win stage four, took the lead before Kooij battled to victory on Thursday local time. "It's really nice to see Olav finishing it off after a really good lead-out, I have to say," Van Aert said. "We used our horsepower and he has the kick." Briton Ben Turner (INEOS Grenadiers) came in third, ahead of one-time race leader Mads Pedersen, who won three of the opening five stages. Australian sprinter Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was fifth. Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) earned two seconds on the last intermediate sprint of the stage and has a 33-second lead over teammate Juan Ayuso of Spain with Italian Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious over one minute behind in third. Michael Storer (Tudor Pro) finished in the main bunch to remain the leading Australian in 14th place overall, 3:22 behind. The 172km ride from Modena to Viadana was expected to bring the sprinters back to the fore, and after an early breakaway of three riders was reeled in by the peloton, the final 25km was a tactical game as teams looked to set their sprinters up. Van Aert, who won stage nine, opted for an early lead-out before the final dangerous corner, with Kooij on his back wheel. Van Uden went past and Kooij had to wait to find room to attack but had the finish to overtake and take victory. "Only Wout can do such a long lead-out like today's," Kooij said. "I got an extraordinary support. I have to thank my teammates, also the rest of the team did a fantastic job." Friday's stage 13 will take the riders 180km from Rovigo to Vicenza. Reuters/ABC

Olav Kooij sprints to victory on stage 12 of Giro d'Italia

Olav Kooij sprinted to victory on stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia as Isaac Del Toro retained the pink jersey in Viadana. Kooij was helped by a superb lead-out from Visma-Lease A Bike team-mate Wout Van Aert, with Casper van Uden second over the line ahead of Britain's Ben Turner. The 172km stage from Modena, the first opportunity for the quick men in a week, came down to the final few bends of a technical finish left slightly damp by earlier rain in Viadana, and Van Aert used all his experience to win the fight for position going into the final sharp left-hander. Team Picnic PostNL's Van Uden tried to go long with his sprint after being left with a slight gap as the road straightened out, but Kooij kept his cool to take the win while the Ineos Grenadiers' Turner held off Mads Pedersen for the last step on the podium. A small crash in the peloton with around one kilometre left to go neutralised the times for the overall standings, allowing the general classification contenders to sit up. Del Toro leads by 33 seconds from his UAE Team Emirates team-mate Juan Ayuso with Bahrain-Victorious rider Antonio Tiberi third. Bonus seconds saw Wednesday's stage winner Richard Carapaz move up to fourth, on the same time as Kooij's team-mate Simon Yates in fifth, one minute and 11 seconds off pink. "It's really nice to see Olav finishing it off after a really good lead out, I have to say," Van Aert said after the race, "We used our horsepower and he has the kick." Kooij added: "Only Wout can do such a long lead out like today's. I got an extraordinary support. I have to thank my teammates, also the rest of the team did a fantastic job." Friday's stage 13 will take the riders 180km from Rovigo to Vicenza.
