Pedersen wins Giro d'Italia stage 13, Del Toro extends general classification lead

Mads Pedersen has won his fourth stage of this year's Giro d'Italia after beating Wout van Aert to the line, while Isaac del Toro has marginally extended his overall lead to retain the pink jersey. As the riders neared the finish of the 180-kilometre ride from Rovigo to Vicenza, Pedersen (Lidl–Trek) was fourth when he launched his bid for victory in the 13th stage on the uphill sprint, squeezing his way past as Van Aert stayed close on his wheel. Del Toro had done well to earn bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint, but the 21-year-old did not have the legs to challenge the sprint heavyweights as he settled for third, leaving Pedersen and Van Aert to battle it out for victory. Ultimately, it was Pedersen who powered through to the finish to take the win by less than a bike length, even as Van Aert — riding for Visma—Lease a Bike — tried his best to make a last-ditch lunge. "What an incredible Giro this is," Pedersen said. "Timing my effort was dictated by instinct. I had to open up on the right side close to the barriers. So I went a bit earlier than I wanted to. "On such a hard day and a finale like this, everyone has burning legs in the finale. It was definitely nice to have seen it before. "I'm happy with this win and adding another 50 points for the Maglia Ciclamino [purple jersey]. I'm overwhelmed with winning again." Del Toro leads his UAE Team Emirates teammate Juan Ayuso by 38 seconds in the general classification. Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious is 1:18 behind in third place. Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), who was 20th in stage 13, is the best-placed Australian in the general classification. He holds down 14th position, 3:37 adrift of del Toro. Reuters/ABC

Pedersen holds off Van Aert to take fourth Giro stage win

Mads Pedersen held off Wout van Aert to claim his fourth stage victory of this year's Giro d'Italia as Isaac del Toro extended his overall lead in the general classification. Pedersen powered through on a long uphill sprint towards the end of stage 13's 180km route from Rovigo to Vicenza and was able to maintain a slender advantage over Belgian Van Aert, with Mexico's Del Toro in third. "I went a bit earlier than I really wanted to but on such a hard uphill final like this sometimes it's OK to go early because everyone has burning legs the last 100 meters," said Denmark's Pedersen."I'm just happy with this one and adding another 50 points to the 'ciclomino' [sprint] jersey so let's see how it goes." Pederson is two wins away from the six stage victories managed by Tadej Pogacar in Del Toro stretched his advantage in the battle for the pink jersey by earning a four-second bonus for the stage finish to add to the two seconds he collected in the intermediate sprint. The UAE Team Emirates rider is now 38 seconds clear of team-mate Juan Ayuso in the general classification race with Italy's Antonio Tiberi in third, another 40 seconds adrift. Britain's Simon Yates in fourth as he seeks his first Grand Tour triumph since winning the Vuelta a Espana in 2018. Saturday's 14th stage is a largely flat 195km run from nearby Treviso to Nova Gorica across Italy's border with Slovenia. Stage 13 results 1. Mads Pedersen (Den/Lidl-Trek) 3hrs 50mins 24secs2. Giro d'Italia: unstoppable Pedersen pips Van Aert in uphill sprint on stage 13

Mads Pedersen won his fourth stage of this year's Giro d'Italia when he sprinted to victory on Friday's stage 13, beating Wout van Aert to the line while Isaac del Toro maintained his overall lead to retain the pink jersey. As the riders neared the finish of the 180km ride from Rovigo to Vicenza, Pedersen was fourth when he launched his bid for victory on the uphill sprint as Van Aert stayed close on his wheel. Del Toro had done well to earn bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint but the 21-year-old did not have the legs to challenge the sprint heavyweights as he settled for third, leaving Pedersen and Van Aert to battle it out for victory. Ultimately, it was Pedersen who powered through to the finish and take the win by less than a bike's length, even as Van Aert tried his best to make a last-ditch lunge to overtake him. 'What an incredible Giro this is. Timing my effort was dictated by instinct. I had to open up on the right side close to the barriers. So I went a bit earlier than I wanted to,' Pedersen said. 'On such a hard day and a finale like this, everyone has burning legs in the finale. It was definitely nice to have seen it before. I'm happy with this win and adding another 50 points for the maglia ciclamino (purple jersey). I'm overwhelmed with winning again.' On a stage with several breakaways that did not come to fruition, it was Romain Bardet of Picnic-PostNL who looked for the win when he attacked on the twisting and turning downhill section near the end. He was joined by Lidl-Trek's Mathias Vacek as the pair stormed into a 17-second lead with four kilometres left. But two kilometres later, that lead was cut to 10 seconds and they could not keep the chasers at bay with less than a kilometre left on the final climb, as the Alpecin-Deceuninck team led the charge. 'We first tried to win the stage with Mathias Vacek. He deserves to get his chance too,' Pedersen added. 'If there was a hesitation in the peloton, Romain Bardet and him would have had the possibility to win. It was ideal, I could sit behind and let other teams work.' That was when Pedersen accelerated to beat Van Aert while Del Toro finished third, two seconds behind after nearly four hours of racing. However, Del Toro now leads his UAE Team Emirates teammate Juan Ayuso by 38 seconds in the general classification while Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious is one minute and 18 seconds behind.

Mexican rider Del Toro adds 5 seconds to his Giro lead; Pedersen wins his 4th stage

VICENZA, Italy (AP) — Mexican rider Isaac Del Toro keeps on adding to his Giro d'Italia lead — even if it's just a few seconds per day. Del Toro's third-place finish in the 13th stage Friday, which had a short but steep uphill finale, extended his lead over UAE Team Emirates teammate Juan Ayuso by five seconds. Danish rider Mads Pedersen claimed his fourth stage win of this year's race with a burst of acceleration up the ascent to the Monte Berico sanctuary. Wout van Aert crossed second with the same time as Pedersen and Del Toro finished third, two seconds behind but three seconds ahead of all the other overall contenders. For the second straight day, Del Toro also picked up a two-second bonus during an intermediate sprint with 10 kilometers to go, while Ayuso picked up four seconds. In the overall standings, Del Toro leads Ayuso by 38 seconds, with Antonio Tiberi 1:18 back in third. Simon Yates is fourth, 1:20 behind, and Primoz Roglic is fifth, 1:35 behind. The 21-year-old Del Toro became the first Mexican cyclist to lead the Giro when he finished second on Sunday. The 180-kilometer (112-mile) route from Rovigo to Vicenza was mostly flat — until the finale, which featured two ascents to Monte Berico, with an average gradient of 7.1% with the finishing meters at 12%. Pedersen also won Stages 1, 3 and 5. The mostly flat 14th stage on Saturday follows a 195-kilometer (121-mile) route from Treviso over the border into Slovenia with a finish in Nova Gorica. Then on Sunday, there's a big climb up Monte Grappa at the stage's midpoint. The Giro ends in Rome on June 1. ___ AP cycling:
