Las Vegas City Council's thoughts on Cashman's future
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The fate of a historic Las Vegas stadium will soon be decided by the city council, and elected officials have already revealed their vision for the site. According to the City of Las Vegas LinkedIn page, national homebuilder Lennar, registered as Greystone LLC, had the highest of the two bids submitted. The city has been trying to find a buyer to redevelop the 50-acre parcel and surrounding buildings in the downtown area. This was the second attempt to auction the property. There were no bidders in the first attempt. In May 2024, two Las Vegas Council members, and one candidate now mayor, revealed their concept for Cashman Center. 'My vision for Cashman is to build a medical complex, a hospital, a children's hospital which I think it sorely needed,' Shelley Berkley, then-candidate now Las Vegas mayor, said. 'We could develop an entire area and make it the envy of the rest of the country, that is my vision for Cashman.' Las Vegas City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman indicated her hope for a children's hospital, pointing to her own family's need. 'I am hoping for a children's hospital, because I have been advocating for one for five years. My daughter was born with a severe Laryngeal Web,' she said. 'And luckily at the time, which was 30 years ago, I was in Los Angeles and so there was a children's hospital.' Cedric Crear, now a former Las Vegas city councilman, oversaw the ward which encompasses the stadium. He mentioned the medical, economic, and even entertainment opportunities for the site. 'Nobody knows this but we have Usher inside Cashman working on all of his Super Bowl showdown at Cashman,' he said. 'We are utilizing it but we are working towards something with it, I'm really excited for it.' A Lennar spokesperson responded to an 8 News Now request and said the company did not have a comment regarding the site at this time. City Council members will vote on March 19 on whether to accept the high bidder or reject all bids. There was no information on what Lennar plans to do with the site. Under the auction terms, 'the city and Lennar will negotiate a purchase and sale agreement, including a timeline to secure land use entitlements and a closing date,' according to the city.
