2nd detainee who escaped ICE facility in Aurora arrested: US Marshals Service
DENVER (KDVR) — The second person who escaped Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in Aurora on March 18 has been recaptured, according to federal officials. Geilond Vido-Romero was arrested Tuesday on a bus at Colfax Avenue and Cherry Street in Denver, according to the U.S. Marshals Service in Denver. ICE Denver said the arrest was made in coordination with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and that Vido-Romero will be 'turned over to the Marshals to face criminal charges.' At least 4 international student visas revoked at the University of Colorado The U.S. Marshals Service of Denver said that Vido-Romero is a suspected member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, and will face escape charges and is also subject to a warrant from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for failure to appear on charges of resisting arrest and theft. Vido-Romero is accused of shoplifting over $1,500 of merchandise from a store. Vido-Romero and another detainee, Joel Jose Gonzalez-Gonzalez, escaped from the Denver Contract Detention Facility in Aurora on March 18 after a power outage allowed the pair to scale a fence in the soccer facility and leave. The pair left the facility at about 9:30 p.m., according to authorities, and their absence was noticed after a headcount was completed at about 12:30 a.m. Gonzalez-Gonzalez was arrested by Adams County law enforcement on March 21 near West 64th Avenue and Beach Street. At about 2:30 a.m., the Aurora Police Department was notified of the escape. Because of an overarching MOU that dictates how the department can aid in the event of an escape, Aurora police did not provide support that night. ICE said local authorities were notified 'immediately' but they 'declined to assist in the search.' An 'administrative error' sent a Maryland man to an El Salvador prison, ICE says 'That's a frustrating and misleading statement. APD was not even notified until 5 hours after these individuals went missing,' Aurora City Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky told FOX31's Vicente Arenas. 'Every agency in the state and possibly neighboring states should have been notified at that exact moment.' Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain also noted that his agency was unable to help until an arrest warrant for each escapee was issued by ICE. While escaping federal custody is a crime, Aurora was powerless to arrest until the notification of such a warrant had been obtained. Colorado law prevents law enforcement from making an arrest based on a civil detainer. 'ICE supervisors confirmed that there was never an expectation for APD to lead this investigation, yet it has become basically public sentiment and statements that ICE said otherwise,' Chamberlain said. Second fugitive captured in joint effort after escaping ICE facility in Colorado, feds say
Geilond Vido-Romero, a man who officials say escaped the U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement detention facility in Aurora in March, was recaptured Tuesday in Denver, the U.S. Marshals Service Denver shared in an X social media post . Vido-Romero originally escaped ICE custody on March 18 with other detainee Joel Jose Gonzalez-Gonzalez, who was recaptured in Adams County on March 21. Both Vido-Romero, 24, and Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 32, escaped ICE following a nighttime power outage at the detention facility in Aurora. They were both believed to have escaped and were subsequently reported missing by ICE to local law enforcement during the early morning hours of the next day. Both suspects were being held on local charges before their transfer to the ICE facility in February. According to U.S. Marshals, Vido-Romero is a suspected member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and has an active federal criminal arrest warrant for the escape, as well as a criminal warrant from Douglas County Sheriff's Office for failure to appear on charges of resisting arrest and theft. There is no previous information from federal law enforcement that connects Gonzalez-Gonzalez to the TdA gang. TdA has been tied to several reports of criminal activity dating back to 2024 in the metro area. It had mainly been concentrated to a residential corridor in Aurora near the intersection of E 12th Ave and Dallas Street. Gang activity has also been reported in Denver. ICE also confirmed the recapture of Vido-Romero in a social media post that confirmed the joint operation with U.S. Marshals and Douglas County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.
