According to them, the scrapping of the student pass increased expenses significantly, placing an added financial burden on commuting to campus.
In July 2023, KMRL launched Vidya to help students travel by Metro at a reduced cost. The scheme mainly targeted students under 25 years of age. The pass included single-day, 30-day, and 45-day options. By leveraging the Vidya 45 pass, a student could travel 50 times within 45 days from any Metro station to any distance.
The cost of the pass was set at Rs 495.
"The Kochi Metro pass was a vital support to the student community across the city. The pass provided much-needed affordability and convenience," stated students union vice chairperson Naveen Mathew in a letter.
Students said the discontinuation of the pass affected students, especially those belonging to modest financial backgrounds. "We urge KMRL to consider resuming the student pass, reaffirming its commitment to student welfare and eco-friendliness," the letter stated.
Various student outfits from educational institutions have also demanded the reinstatement of the scheme.
