Prep talk: Receiver Darren Haggerty of Viewpoint shows off his athleticsm

You can go ask any college football recruiter whether they'd be more impressed with a high school player who spends the majority of time in offseason seven-on-seven competitions or working on other skills in track and field? They'd always say track. Darren Haggerty of Viewpoint High is an example of a football player who's going to benefit from showing what he can do in track and field. On Saturday, he pulled off career-best performances to win the Division 4 high jump at 6 feet, 6 inches and the long jump at 22-8 at the Southern Section championships at Moorpark High. He helped Viewpoint share the Division 4 title with Gardena Serra. He was a little shocked afterward, not knowing he had it in him. He was considered Viewpoint's best football player last fall as a sophomore, leading the team in receiving with 39 receptions for 674 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 37 tackles on defense. … Quarterback Luke Fahey led Mission Viejo to the championship of the Millikan seven-on-seven tournament, beating San Diego Lincoln in the final. San Juan Hills won the tournament at Dana Hills and Charter Oak took its own tournament title. … The semifinals are set for City Section Division I baseball on Wednesday at Stengel Field in Glendale. It will be No. 5 Verdugo Hills vs. No. 1 Banning at 6 p.m. and No. 11 Taft vs No. 2 Carson at 3 p.m. This is a daily look at the positive happenings in high school sports. Kingsway Financial Services Inc (KFS) Q1 2025 Earnings Call Highlights: Strategic Acquisitions ...

Release Date: May 08, 2025 For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. Kingsway Financial Services Inc (NYSE:KFS) completed the acquisition of MLC Plumbing, enhancing their Kingsway Skilled Trades platform. The acquisition of Viewpoint by SPI Software strengthens their leadership in the vacation ownership software market. Revenue and adjusted EBITA for the KSX segment grew by 23% year over year. The extended warranty segment is showing signs of recovery with cash sales up 3.7% year over year. Kingsway Financial Services Inc (NYSE:KFS) appointed two new independent directors, strengthening their corporate governance. Consolidated adjusted EBITDA declined by $800,000 compared to the prior year quarter. The extended warranty segment's adjusted EBITA decreased from $1.4 million to $800,000 year over year. Higher operating expenses impacted profitability in the extended warranty segment. Raviix and C-suite experienced a small year-over-year decline in revenue. Debt increased slightly due to the addition of Bud's Plumbing seller note and refinancing of Ravik's debt. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 5 Warning Sign with KFS. Q: The Viewpoint acquisition seems interesting. Could you please provide any color on how the transaction came about and why it might make sense strategically? A: The acquisition was sourced by Drew at SPI, who developed a relationship with the company and its former owners. Strategically, it makes sense because SPI is a hosted on-prem software solution for enterprise customers in North America, while Viewpoint is a cloud-native software for smaller customers in the Asia Pacific and Australia. This acquisition provides SPI with a cloud-native solution for North America and access to a new geography for its enterprise solution. Q: Can you please explain what you mean by the J curve with search acquisitions and how it works in practice? A: The J curve refers to the performance curve over time in search fund acquisitions. Initially, there's a negative impact on profitability due to investments in talent, processes, and technology. Over time, as these investments pay off, performance improves significantly. This curve also applies to operators, where high-attribute, inexperienced operators may initially lag but eventually outperform experienced ones. Q: You mentioned a robust deal pipeline. Can you share more about what you're seeing with respect to search M&A? A: We have three Operators in Residence (OIRs) who are adept at building M&A pipelines. Additionally, platforms like Skilled Trades are specifically formed for transactions with experienced operators. We are excited about the opportunities for tuck-in acquisitions in fragmented markets. Q: Can you speak to the reasoning for the owner of Bud's staying on as President for a one-year transition period? Could we see that replicated with future acquisitions? A: It's typical and desirable in search acquisitions for the previous owner to stay on during a transition period. This helps in transferring customer relationships and institutional knowledge, making it a win-win situation. We hope to replicate this in future acquisitions. Q: With vertical market solutions and now skilled trades, you have a couple of platforms. Are there any other industries you might target for platforms? A: We evaluate industries based on growth potential and recurring revenue. Industries like insurance brokerage, wealth management, and accounting services could be compelling for building platforms. The key is finding industries that support growth via acquisition and align with our operators' interests. Still standing by her man, Richard Scrushy's wife insinuates Satanic conspiracy in prosecution of former HealthSouth CEO

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — From 2003 to 2007, countless photos published in newspapers around the world showed former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy walking to and from courthouses in Birmingham and Montgomery over criminal charges against him as the head of the multi-billion dollar company. More often than not, his wife, Leslie, was right by his side. On Thursday, the former Florida Junior Miss runner-up-turned-entrepreneur-turned televangelist who had stood by Scrushy for so many years as he weathered indictments and criminal trials stood by him yet again in Montgomery as the disgraced businessman sought the U.S. government's help in clearing his name in his 2006 federal conviction on bribery and extortion charges. Richard and Leslie Scrushy were married on June 7, 1997 in a lavish wedding at the former estate of British playwright Noel Coward in Jamaica. It was Scrushy's third marriage, not a year after divorcing his second wife, Karon Brooks. In press reports at the time, guests included Martha Stewart, who reportedly helped plan the wedding, as well as singer Emmylou Harris, who stopped by and sang during the reception. Over the years, between state and federal trials, the Scrushys went through a lot. In the midst of Richard Scrushy's first trial in Birmingham, he and his wife began hosting 'Viewpoint with Richard and Leslie Scrushy,' a half-hour Christian talk show on local television. As the daughter of a Methodist minister, Leslie Scrushy knew how to wax poetic about God and often hosted the show herself when her husband was in court or awaiting trial. More than that, Leslie was Scrushy's rock. 'Leslie Scrushy reviewed FBI statements, questioned strategy and offered insight into how the jury viewed testimony,' reporter Janet Guyon wrote in a profile of her in The Washington Post in 2006. 'She led prayers before each day in court and dished the dirt on witnesses during recesses.' After Richard Scrushy's conviction in 2006, the wealth that he and Leslie had enjoyed for years was slowly stripped away, from their vacation homes to their boats. According to The Birmingham News, the couple handed over between $10 million to $12 million to HealthSouth to disprove claims that Leslie was hiding her husband's money. This included Mrs. Scrushy being forced to give up $3 million worth of jewelry, as well as $2.3 million in cash and investments. Nevertheless, she continued to keep the faith. 'God is just as good today as he was a year ago yesterday,' Leslie told The Birmingham News following her husband's conviction. 'And he works all things together for good. And so we'll see as time unfolds what good comes out of this day for us.' As Richard Scrushy served his time in a Texas federal prison, Leslie would visit him every weekend she could for five years, trekking 1,200 miles roundtrip each time before eventually moving the family to Texas to be closer to him. During the press conference Thursday, Scrushy looked behind him to Leslie and two of their children, Gracie Beth and Jaden, thanking them for their support. 'I don't know, Leslie, I don't want to ask you to say anything unless you want to, baby,' Scrushy said to Leslie. Initially, Leslie Scrushy shied away from the microphones pointed at her husband. However, within a few minutes, she slowly made her way next to her beleaguered husband to offer her perspective– a spiritual one– on what the last 20 years had done to her family. However, rather than talk about losing their once-luxurious life, Leslie addressed another aspect of what bothered her about her husband's trial, one that insinuated more Biblical evil on the part of the prosecutors than corruption. 'On the day that he was arraigned here and they read the charges, he was charged with Statute 666, so that was very clear to me where this attack was coming from,' she said. Specifically, the statute deals with theft and bribery concerning programs that receive federal funds, but that's not what Scrushy was talking about. During her comments, she emphasized a tie to her husband's case and '666,' known as 'the mark of the beast' in the Bible that signifies the Antichrist. Scrushy didn't stop there. 'And then, when the prosecutors rested their case, they rested their case on June 6 of 2006. 666,' she said. She also drew a Biblical connection with the names of three of the people at the center of her husband's case: U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller, U.S. Attorney Louis V. Franklin Sr. and Assistant U.S. Attorney. Stephen P. Feaga. 'From my perspective, it was a conspiracy that required Franklin, Feaga and Fuller all to accomplish,' she said. 'If you look at their names, they all start with the letter 'F,' which is the sixth letter of the alphabet, so part of how I made it through was to continue to pray to God, to thank him for all of the blessings that we see.' She said that while going through her husband's whole ordeal was difficult, she was thankful in her faith that led to a better life. 'Was it hard? Yes. Were there so many gut punches? Yes. Did we feel abandoned? Yes. Was it horrific at so many points and turns? Yes, but I am so thankful to my savior, to the father in heaven for getting us through this day and that our children are still doing well and thriving.' With that, Leslie Scrushy stepped back to be with her children. 'Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Leslie,' Richard Scrushy said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Defending champion Estancia girls' soccer bows out in Division 5 semifinals

Estancia brought its customary grit and attacking acumen into its CIF Southern Section girls' soccer semifinal, but the fortune that's so often accompanying was mostly absent. The Eagles' drive for successive Division 5 championships ended Saturday evening in a 3-2 defeat to visiting Viewpoint, a margin that might have been more significant — or gone the other way. It ended a 14-match unbeaten streak since mid-December. Estancia (12-4-4) struggled to manage the Patriots' tidiness and guile much of the game but responded when punched — quickly rallying from one deficit at the end of the first half, halving another moments after Viewpoint's third goal — and spent the last 20 minutes seemingly on the verge of pulling even. 'To get to this point is big,' Eagles head coach Josh Juarez said. 'We, of course, want to win the whole thing, but the way they fought to the very end is a testament to those girls. ... Soccer is about those key moments, and we have a lot of talent to create those and be there in those moments. We just got unlucky with a few finishes, and they capitalized on theirs, and that's the difference a lot of times. Especially when you get into the playoffs. 'It's the key moments that get you moving on or not. They came out on top of those moments.' Junior forward Vanessa Pastrana scored both of the Eagles' goals, the first, to the lower-right corner from Paloma Silva's goalmouth feed, providing making it 1-1 in the 40th minute, the second from an unintentionally brilliant free kick in the 62nd. The first fractured the Patriots' sense of inevitability. The second made Estancia believe. They dictated the game the rest of the way through stout defensive work in front of the defensive third and a direct approach aimed at isolating Pastrana and Silva up top, often through dynamic midfielder Kim Muñoz. It produced three good chances and one great one: a sizzling Silva shot in the 67th minute, from backline leader Aisleen Avalos' ball into space behind Viewpoint's defensive line, that flashed just past the right post. 'It would be very easy to just feel sorry for ourselves after [going down 3-1], but we came back and tried to get the last one,' Juarez said. 'We were oh-so-close so many times.' The game belonged to Viewpoint (9-5-5), an efficient and purposeful attacking side that will face Heritage (21-8-3) in the final, through most of the first half and portions of the second. The Patriots, fueled by masterful playmaker Kaylee Foxhoven and mercurial forward Charlotte Young, were hugely superior with the ball, in precision and idea, and they looked capable of doing as they pleased. Estancia did well to diminish its foes' scoring chances — and nearly took the lead, twice: Pastrana just wide in the 21st, Breanna Lopez high from a gorgeous Silva pass in the 24th. Viewpoint finally broke though in the 33rd, on Foxhoven's poke through corner-kick debris. Estancia, which had shut out six of its previous eight opponents, found energy with that, became more efficient at closing the space the Patriots were exploiting, and it was 1-1 seven minutes later. 'Our system makes it difficult for anyone to do whatever they want, and our team works hard defensively,' Juarez said. 'Our goal was to frustrate their key players and not make it so easy. ... It's not like we're always going to stop the best players — kind of like it's hard to stop a Kim or a Vanessa or a Paloma — it's just trying to make things difficult so they make the least impact as possible.' Viewpoint might have been comfortably ahead but for impatience when its attack ran into barriers. It forced balls rather than wait for openings, playing to Estancia's strengths and conceding command. When things did click, the Patriots were decisive. Young deposited a rebound to restore the lead three minutes into the second half, and it was 3-1 when Mishara Briscoe finished a ball over the top in the 61st. A minute later, the Eagles won a free kick in the semicircle above the box, and Pastrana unexpectedly hits it low to the left, snaking it past the defensive wall and into the open side of the net. Viewpoint's wall expected a higher shot and jumped to deal with that. Pastrana's savvy, alas, was an accident. 'I was going to go more for power, top-right corner, but I don't even know what I did,' she said. 'I kicked the ball wrong, and it went there magically.' That magic didn't provide enough the rest of the way, and the journey was done. 'We wanted to do it back to back,' Pastrana said. 'We gave it our all, and, obviously, not the outcome we wanted, but we worked hard all season to get to this point.' Sage Hill 2, Coachella Valley 0: The Lightning won at home on Saturday in the semifinals of the Division 4 playoffs. Keila Fukuda scored both goals for Sage Hill (11-3-1), which advanced to the first CIF final in program history. The Lightning will play La Mirada (13-8-3) for the Division 4 title on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at El Modena High School.
